When do you consider an opinion 'Dumb'?

I use the dumb button for a variety of things: e.g. factually incorrect statements, being a ****, opinions/assertions that I think are morally wrong, etc.

I don’t think they should get rid of the dumb button. Sometimes a post is dumb and it’s fine to recognize that. And conversations can also be played out. It’s a waste of time to rehash the conversation, so just dumb it and move on. And getting rid of the dumb button won’t get rid of negative reactions, it just shifts them. Dislike still means you dislike the post, useful means you’re a tool, creative means you’re nuts, and rainbow means “oh you sweet summer child.”

Useful, Angry, and Creative are the three least used emojis, at least if my content. I've gotten 92 dumbs over 16 years or so. Really gotta pump those numbers up.

I've only used the dumb icon a handful of times. And, it's often the case of an 'opinion' which is not only factually ignorant, but slants to harmful information.

If that's really the case, then you need to do your best to refute it.

Let's say you see someone breaking into your neighbors' house. You call the cops. Just saying, "Hey you burglars, you are criminals" isn't going to make anything better.

I’ve gotten 456 dumbs. Some are from posters that you disagree with on something and then they will dumb every post of yours for the next couple days. Junior High level there. I probably haven’t seen all I’ve received since when I notice they do that, I place them on ignore because no reason to interact with someone who acts like a child.

I think useful never gets used because people use the “informative” instead. I can’t remember seeing that wrench but I see the “i” circle often.

Dumb count is probably equated to cave use more than anything. One guy who is no longer with us blanket coated the cave with dumb buttons. Not exaggerating I bet he clicked at least 300,000 dumb buttons.

There are more than one of those I’ve seen and I only look into the cave maybe 1 time a year on average. The ones who do it there continue outside the cave also.

Dumbthumb is no longer with us? I'm not complaining.

Not much if he is, unless my ignore is masking his existence better. There was a time if a thread had 27 posts you could bet your life he clicked 27 dumbs.

I don’t think he posts in the cave anymore. The only time I’ve seen anything it’s been reactions from him has been in the gameday threads.

Of course not. It gets rid of the INSULT.

Why do people feel the need to disparage others? A person can disagree and say so without feeling the need to kick anyone in the gut.

I got one from a normal decent person the other day (instead of usual suspects) and I was actually appreciative of it because I was being a jerk and it was someone I know is typically friendly.
I don't hardly ever give them out. Some people throw them around like they're pez. If I get one from someone that's not a moron typically I do tend to tend to self-reflect more. I'm pretty reserved on here compared to real life however, so I don't find myself catching a lot of dumbs from people that aren't dumb asses.

Calling someone a tool or a sweet summer child is absolutely an insult.

And sometimes people, even if they aren’t dumb, make dumb posts (see HFCS’ post). Other people are dumb and aren’t worth more of your time.

Snowflakes are beautiful, unique and they serve a purpose. Sorry you don't want to be one.

And that serves what purpose? I'm not sure it actually makes you feel better, because you seem kinda grumpy. And, yes, judgy.

"Dumb" does nothing to improve the situation. If you hold knowledge in the palm of your hand, you need to share it with the person, nay, the very universe.

Enlighten, not beknighten.

Here ya go:

"Technically, snow is not "white" in the same way a piece of paper or a white t-shirt is. Individual snow crystals are actually transparent and colorless.

The reason it looks white on the ground is due to how light interacts with the millions of tiny ice crystals."

Hopefully this doesn't blow up my emerging "judgy" reputation here.

In your context. Tools are useful, and nothing wrong with being a child. We've all done it.

And sometimes people, even if they aren’t dumb, make dumb posts (see HFCS’ post).

That's your judgment. Don't know if you've ever heard of Roger Von Oech, but he was famous in the 80's for some work he did in creativity. One of his suggestions when developing a project is to "Ask A Fool". That means, you ask someone who has no clue about your topic what they understand of it and what they'd like to know. Extremely useful in a variety of fields.

Writing people off for being "dumb" or "simple" or even "childlike" is not, in my opinion, what wise people do. People who are truly wise, that is.

Other people are dumb and aren’t worth more of your time.

Ignorance is a natural human state. We are all dumb at something (one of mine is calculus, there are a zillion others), so I have nothing against it.

But people who are cruel or judgmental for no particular reason besides ego are usually the ones who aren't worth my time.

When someone thinks they know more about X's and O's than coaches because they have watched a lot of football and coached their kid's pee wee football team.
