When do you consider an opinion 'Dumb'?

Why are you being willfully obtuse?

And thank you for your opinions, I will give them the weight that they deserve

98% of the time I do. But even you can admit, some are just so darned stupid it's a complete waste of everyone's time to refute it.

Sometimes I think we confuse a person's fear of contradiction with stupidity, and it's not always stupid to be afraid.

Which goes back to insults and why it's wrong to insult real people we're interacting with based on our own personal frustrations with them.

Is it pointless to argue with people sometimes? Indubitably. But, as I see it, that rarely has anything to do with stupidity, real or perceived.

I agree with your maturity regarding this. And, again, I point out, that I have the maturity to engage in rational debate. I've received my fair share of 'dumb' emoticons, hoping there'd be some logic behind them. But, again, some are so dumb they come off as click-bait, furthering the argument of wasting peoples' time. Even you have to admit, your time is limited and thus the things you choose to engage with.

You’re arguing we should be fully aware of the thoughts and opinions of those who are uninformed, inexperienced or foolish which I agree with.

I don't think we ever can be fully aware of the the thoughts and opinions of those who are uninformed, inexperienced or foolish. Rather that it is best not to just label them as lacking intelligence. That said, it's great to be agreed with. That pheonomenon is rarer than I would like. ;)
So, thank you.

Unfortunately there’s a growing undercurrent that the uninformed/inexperienced are automatically better equipped for all expert tasks than actual career experts. It’s tricky to observe the former without excusing the latter.

That's interesting. Where did you come across that idea?

Did you think of it because social media seems to "prove" that everyone is now an expert on everything because now we all have a public platform or platforms to express ourselves?

I have no choice. I'm a geezer. I've seen stuff.

Quite right.

I'd rather quote and respond to a post versus hit the disagree button. If I get a disagree, I'm curious about their counterpoint versus a drive-by disagree.

I looked at some of the dumb ratings I've gotten and honestly don't understand them (probably because I'm dumb!)

The only dumb ratings I remember giving are reserved for someone that's saying something homophobic/racist, someone I think is clearly a troll, or someone that has become unhinged on their attacks of others. Negative ratings are kinda petty, imo, but I've never been much of an arguer/debater.

Very few of us are dumb. But pretty much none of us are immune to having a dumb take on things from time to time. When I do put a dumb on something - which isn't that often - I am not calling the person dumb, but rather what they are posting or the take from another source they are reporting.

Unfortunately, there's no way of knowing what you intended to insult, with just an icon.

A short reply like what you just wrote, however, would have a much greater effect. It gives the impression that you are a thinker rather than just someone with a bad case of hemorrhoidal flare-up.

I don't "Dumb" anyone's post or opinion. If I disagree, I simply use the red "X". No need to go any further than that.
I don't ever use the dumb button or the red X because it's lazy. If I disagree with someone's post strongly, I try to explain why.

However, I have to admit there are many posts where I just roll my eyes and move on. I guess that's lazy too, but there are some posters on this board with whom it's impossible to have a respectful debate, so it's not worth trying to explain yourself.

To say something said is dumb is not an insult. I'm saying the post is dumb, not the poster. Everyone says - or posts - dumb things from time to time. I know I certainly do.

I agree with this. I’m not sure I’ve given more than 5 dumbs ever but it’s a reflection of the post, not the poster. Though it seems to have taken that form here in CF much like the downvote on Reddit.

You are making the assumption that I don't reply as well.

Well, no.

The only thing I assume is that people would have very little interest in what I had to say AFTER I dumbed their post.

Seems a waste of time to add injury to insult, as it were.
