No Bowl Game — Iowa State Turns Down Bowl Bid

I don't blame anyone. Players haven't even met the new coach yet and they are picking bowl games today. Just really lucky timing.

This pisses me off. It’s about the experience of a bowl game, winning is secondary. If you can field a team you should play. Sounds like they are putting it on the players but I can’t imagine they weren’t heavily influenced by the athletics department
You say this as if you think that notorious penny pincher Jamie Pollard didn't mind having to pay a $500,000 fine. If it was up to Jamie, we'd be playing in a bowl game.

Their Total Defense was also ranked way higher than ours too.... so there's that. Top 20 defense in the nation.

Their offense, however, was no bueno.
Great if true. Total Defense says a lot more to me than points per game. Highly ranked Total Defense means you are stingy AF and yards are difficult to gain. PPG can look bad through no fault of the defense. It doesn't speak to turnovers by your offense, great starting field position by the other team, etc. Give me Total Defense all day long.

I might have to be out on football going forward. JP checked out, players checked out... might as well check out too.

At least I can go to my buddies house and get drunk during Iowa games. Or could get out on the motorcycle for day trips on fall saturdays.

My other thought is "when will ISU be bowl eligible again?" What if this is Earl Bruce leaving, and we are entering a two decade desert of futility? Should ISU join the Big East?

The PAC 12.

So f**ck the fans right? We buy season tickets, we’re there for every game, including watching and supporting them through a losing streak. The reward of a bowl game to look forward to at the end of the season is part of the reason I invest the time and the money for the season tickets. If we’re just gonna turn bowl games down Im going to have to think about if I want to renew my tickets next season (Ive had them for 15 years).

Early in the season with new team and new coach. I see you chose to ignore that.

I’m just saying you’re selectively choosing good things to focus on and ignoring others.

I’ve said on here I like the Rogers hire and prefer it over mouse.

But bowl games are meaningless! That's why every healthy program declines bids.

Disappointed, but glad the players had a voice in the matter.
If they don't want to play, then it is better to not play.
Let's Go State!

This is a really great point.

Even in the age of NIL and essentially unrestricted movement between schools the players have somewhat limited agency.

Really disappointed. With all the talk of culture, I figured with Campbell leaving and although a lot of players are expected to transfer- a bowl would have been a great chance for the 2025 Cyclones to play one last game together!

This tells me:
  1. The portal window is still an issue. Because the injury excuse is BS. The players are really saying they are going to be too busy exploring their portal options over the next 2 weeks. And don't want to practice and risk injury.
  2. Did ISU tell players, if you intend to enter portal, you can't play in bowl. If that's the case, I think schools need to re-think that policy. Professional athletes who are free-agents, play in their team's Super Bowl or World Series. And I've never heard an accusation of players giving less than 100%.
The news is a gut punch!

As crazy as it sounds, and I never thought I would ever say this, but the NFL has more stability than what the college game has. You definitely don’t have these wholesale changeouts like we are seeing, and unfortunately, experiencing.

To me, the single biggest challenge in all of this is how do we as fans, alumni, etc. continue to go along with this? I get that we are more about what’s on the front of the jersey, but man, that is getting tested right now in this world where talent and coaches appear to be very transactional commodities and not loyal to much of anything, especially the school, which appears to be at or near the bottom of that list.
Well said

On one hand, I'm really disappointed that I don't get to see them one more time in a bowl game, but on the other, I think I'd be disappointed by the kind of showing that we would have under the circumstances.

I hope that we have a chance to see a lot of these kids in a Cyclone uniform again, but I won't hold it against any that choose otherwise.

My guess is combination of upset staff for the non-internal hire and lack of player interest
This. Mouse didn't get it, and the previous staff and (soon to be former) players are extremely frustrated about that.

It is more logical to select the data points of the last 2 months into a coaches first season vs the first month. Thought most would understand this. My bad
