Matt Campbell to Penn State??

3 years ago I would agree with you. Unless someone gets College Football under control this isn't good. at this point you need like 5-10M for just the head coach, gold plated locker rooms and now these coaches are basically getting a blank checkbook to buy players.
ISU will never be a destination job. It just won't. Low budget, lousy winters, etc...

College football is a completely different beast than it was 10 years ago. When Matt was hired, there was no transfer portal, no NIL. Even though the gap existed between the Big Ten/SEC and everyone else, it's not as wide as it was today.

This has a different feel to it. We've been left in the dust to rot by conferences that don't find ISU valuable and alumni who don't care about sports.
And it's very likely to be a completely different beast 10-20 years from now.

We've got conferences wanting to take a payday loan because some of their members can't afford the present college sports landscape to people advocating for more taxes to fund college ADs so they can pay teenagers and early twenty-somethings to play sports. To me that indicates that the current college landscape isn't really sustainable.

NIL has caused college sports to become the plaything for those who choose to spend lots of money on their entertainment. Some fanbases have more such folks than others. We'll see how long that fad lasts.

If it did somehow fall through it would be so humiliating for Penn State and hilarious. But it just feels like there's no way that's happening at this point.

I knew it was remote, but damn State College is in the middle of nowhere. It's about the same distance from State College to Pittsburgh as it is from Ames to Minneapolis. I guess Harrisburg is only 90 minutes away.

The only thing that makes sense is Campbell told PSU he was going to take the job, but he wanted to do right by his players and coaches and tell them first. and then Penn State leaked this out and now he's waffling because he realizes he'll have to deal with this type of crap all of the time.

It isn't the only thing...but it could be one explanation.

I have a coworker who is a Penn State Alum. If this ends up going the way it looks I'm going to go give him a wet willie on Monday when I'm in the office.

Yeah, but it is less than 50 miles to Altoona, PA.

Now, Altoona, PA isn’t as nice as Altoona, IA but still…

We are what we are, the only way we are going to get a really good coach to come here and stay is to get an older coach that has spent years working his way up as either a head coach at the lower levels or someone like Snyder at KSU that was approaching the point that its either now or never to be a head coach. The problem with getting another young guy is that you may be in the same situation 5 years from now, program has success and the bigger dogs come around sniffing.
