Friday OT - Have At It

I always laughed at the rewards. I felt that if I’m doing well, pay me. Don’t spend a bunch of money on a meal and then hand me a plaque. Give me $200 bucks or an extra day off. Why I’m self employed now.
Don't know if this is a normal case, but it always made me laugh...

A coworker of mine won a big award, something equivalent to "employee of the year." The award was a chrome-plated, die-cast model of a CAT dozer (this was a construction company). It was pretty sweet. There was no monetary award, just the dozer on a nice plaque.

His next paycheck he notices its less than usual; there's a deduction of about $300 on there. He calls payroll to see what's up. Turns out, they treated the dozer award as a "bonus" and added the monetary value to his comp as a bonus, which triggered tax implications.

In short, he won an award and had to pay $300 for it. Good times.

You have to wonder if they were hoping he wouldn't notice.

I think anything over a certain amount gets taxed. My son got a $50 gift card for something and his paycheck was 20 bucks lower the next time because of it.

A place I worked wanted to show a bigger Christmas bonus, wasn’t even that big, so they would give the full 250 to you at their party and then deduct taxes on the next paycheck. It caught first year employees several times.

Typically the only difference is going to be a gross up for the social security and Medicare taxes. I would expect $54.14 of additional pay for a $50 gift card and a miscellaneous deduction for $50 for the item received.

22% fed and 3.9% state is coming out also.

Typically bonuses won't have federal and state withholdings if they're a gift card or cash where the net amount is grossed up.

If the bonus is the gross then you would typically have taxes withheld (aka a $3,000 bonus only yields a check of $2,000)

Most I ever received, and my son, were not grossed up. They were for X amount and then taxes hit on them. When I was at the bank, your bonus was separate and was a basic paystub so you knew the net.

I guess the bank owner used to give us cash in a card, that was everyone’s favorite. He didn’t care about a few taxes so it was straight cash homie.

I don’t have much to say right now. What is a thing, whatever topic you want, that you have wanted to say to people but there isn’t really a reason to say it? Confession, stranger story, joke - whatever, just keep it acceptable for prime time TV.
Watching their ads, people who own Subarus are really crappy drivers.

There was a thread a while back about things that are popular to the masses that you don't like/can't stand, or something like that. Couldn't find it, but this seems as good a place as any.

'Hey Dude' shoes.

Truly awful. Nothing screams "I live in Red County Iowa and have no idea how to actually dress up" like a pair of crisp white Hey Dude shoes on a guy.

I had to look up what they were, because I'd never heard the name. Funny enough I know a few electricians and roofers who swear by them because the soles provide good grip, they're comfortable and not expensive.

I had a CT scan of my mid-section last week. The results included lots of words like, "normal", "no abnormalities", "no suspicious abnormalities", etc. The word "normal" was used seven times. However, this one caught my eye: "GENITAL ORGANS: Unremarkable."

The word "unremarkable" was used only once in the report.

The end.

Odd tidbit: I was once, way back in the 90s, on a plane from NY to DC. Seated next to a young lady. She was returning from Martha's Vineyard (where, unbeknownst to me, she'd been stalking the POTUS). I was returning from Nantucket, where I'd been fishing. We chatted the whole way from NY to DCA. It wasn't until she made the news the next year and achieved infamy that I realized who she was....
Too late for Squeaky. She's the last female I remember...

So hey...hi. I guess this is a confession(?)

Hi, my name is Sara. (Hiiii Sara) And I've been married for 27 years.

And I have a 15 year-old stepdaughter.

Now wait, you're saying. The math ain't mathing. And no, it isn't. It's what you think. And against what many of you think is better judgement, I've stuck around. But this post isn't about what happened and why it happened.

It's about her. Because she's bloody freaking brilliant. She's a sophomore at a DSM area school (wanna keep a little anominity), and if it has anything to do with music, she's there. Marching band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz One. Chorale, musical, show choir. Show choir band. Speech team - musical theater. (Did you know that existed? Because I didn't until last school year) Our calendars are super crazy with practices and performances. And yes, when she gets to college, she wants to major in music ed. We're hoping it's Iowa State, but she's talking Julliard.

So yeah. That's my story. So if you see me posting about "C" around here and how crazy certain weekends were, you'll understand why.

Thanks for reading.
