Cracks in the B1G?

I would bet that this doesn't happen. OSU, Michigan, and the like don't have anywhere they can threaten to leave to. They could say the SEC, but they would just be making the same or less money. In short, I think the top of the Big 10 lacks leverage.

People here want this to happen to the Big 10 so they are letting that color their view of how likely this is to happen.

They’d start a new BIG, if “forced”

If the top of the BIG is wrong in lower schools capitulating, there is no shortage of entities willing to pay for the top of the BIG. Add in the best of the ACC and a schedule against ND, and it’s making more than the SEC

Meanwhile, if the lower BIG schools are wrong, they’re demoted

You’re not thinking about the asymmetrical risk. In that game of chicken, one side has nothing to lose, no real reason to fold. The other has every reason

Voting against less subsidization is a great way to make a slight fracture into a complete break. We could only hope the bottom half of BIG lacks the self-awareness required in order to vote against OSU and Co

How clearer did he need to be? Basically said it would be devastating to the Big 10 if Ohio State wasn’t in the conference.
Man you read so much into stuff, he also explicitly says OSU is proud to be in the big ten and isn’t going anywhere. He wasn’t clear on anything except saying that OSU is an awesome brand and I agree

Again this only works if you believe a 20 team super league happens which many people including myself don’t.

Also Michigan isn’t leaving the big ten

Do you even call a 48 team group a super league though? People have alot of different definitions for super league so kinda curious
You have to go to at least 60 schools and set standards for them, stadium must be at least say 50,000, you must be willing to spend X amount on the sport of football. If you go much lower than 60, not only do you open yourself up to lawsuits, but you will be getting away from areas that can support a school and its fan base. Nothing wrong with 6 ten team divisions, all feeding into one playoff system. Have them play the 9 division games and then 3 games against another division with it rotating, with all schedules being planned out by computers to make them equal as possible.

I’d argue this. While CFB drives a lot of viewership, ratings have gone down over time (especially the last 10 years). I don’t think realignment is the primary reason, but it hasn’t helped.
More like consolidation has helped slow the decline, but demographic and technological challenges are enough to offset it.

They just posted the best Week 1 ever.

First off, I fully believe that Texas is going to destroy the SEC eventually. They've destroyed every conference they've been in. Second, at some point, the big dogs in the B10 are going to want a greater share than whats going to NW and Purdue. That's just the way it goes. Now, whether that is getting a bigger portion of the TV revenue with the conference intact or whether it is ejecting to go to the super league, that's the question. I do know if the super league does happen, my days of watching CFB outside of ISU and the B12 are over. The NFL is a better product anyway. If they want to ruin the sport, go ahead, but I can guarantee that VERY few fans are going to pick a new team to root for.
A small enough super league could actually increase my interest.

You would have a large division made out of schools like Iowa and Iowa State that would have their own championship and could organize into sensible conferences.

Imagine playing a "league" schedule that looked like this:
Iowa
Kansas
Kansas State
Mizzou
OK State
Minnesota
Illinois
Wisconsin
Nebraska

I could potentially see this but again is that a super league? It’s just the P4 rebranded…but also P2 not giving up those advantages willingly

Basically you miss the old conference but just want to add Wisconsin, Illinois and Minn instead of OUT? I don’t blame ya but that’s big ten west level easy which I thought we made fun of (which I agree) on here?

Try avoiding such non-sequiturs

The top of the BIG schools culling the bottom by leaving doesn’t mean, or require, the formation of a superleague.

Michigan won’t have to leave, because the MSU types won’t force them to.

Yeah it does because where would they leave to? Can’t have 1 without the other

B10 inner wealth gap is going to increase, not sure how, its simply inevitable. Its already which 4 of PSU, OSU, Michigan, Oregon, USC go to the playoff, here and there one of the lessors will make the playoff, just like one of the B12 lessors. Probably about the same odds if one considers that in some years a B10 lessor wont make it.

You mean money is what they would not be willing to go give up. I would counter that by saying that if this new league does form the money it would generate would be more than what they currently are receiving now. Putting everyone on an equal playing field as least as it goes to media money. The networks would make more money by having 12 weeks of quality games unlike what they are now showing at the start of the season. I mean how many people are going to tune in to watch ISU/Ark St or the squawks hosting UMASS on Saturday. Compare that to if both schools were playing say Tennessee or UCLA.

It's a geographic league of similar schools.

We only made fun of the Big 10 West because Iowa fans acted like it was some kind of measure of greatness. Getting credit for their association with Ohio State and Michigan but rarely having to play them, while we had to play Texas and OU every year.

No I get that but the P2 won’t want to give up their wealth advantage as it’s what keeps their top teams ahead of so many others. I don’t agree with it and think your way is better but I just don’t see a world where they willingly give that up.

Ahhh got ya and yeah that’s fair

Maybe consolidation helped, not sure that’s true, but would require more analysis. No question the demo and technological habits have impacted viewership.

Take the “Best Week 1 ever!” With a grain of salt. It’s not apples to apples anymore since the measurement methodology changed. It is potentially more accurate now at least.

So you believe top schools want to exploit wealth advantages, and not give them up

I agree- RIP to Big 10 equal tv revenue sharing.

The same unequal revenue scheme can occur in a superleague, with all schools still making more than now due to cutting into the profit of the networks
