YouTube TV Getting Ability to Split Into 4 Screens

Youtube's parent company is is worth $3.5 trillion, Disney on the other hand is worth $200 billion... I don't think Alphabet really cares if this goes longer
Google/Alphabet could end Disney if they really wanted to.

They need to bid on SEC rights and then just control/take everything from Disney

I think the reason why streamers or tech companies haven’t gotten into college sports is because they know it’s a terrible business deal. Because if they wanted to, they have the money.

They don’t get to be trillion+ dollar companies by making bad business decisions.

Yeah, I figured if CFB Saturday didn't get the parties to blink that MNF today would do the trick. If they roll on past the game tonight, then I could easily see this going for the long haul.
Wonder how much pull the NFL actually has.

The only live TV I watch is sports...and yet I find myself hoping this goes on for a long time! I had YTTV way back in the early days...I just want to see the "sports" industry take a hit...not even sure why! The thing I miss most about ESPN now is the NBA show...not the games...the roundtable with the TNT crew! I miss that! Didn't miss anything else this weekend though...

Yeah, I could see both sides wanting it to go on longer.

Disney probably wants as many people as possible to leave YouTube tv for their app or Hulu. And if Disney hasn’t seen many defections yet, they can just wait since most people probably aren’t willing to go without Disney-owned channels permanently.

And YouTube tv is incentivized for this to go on longer to show that they can’t be bullied. The only reason they’d be coming to the bargaining table is if they’re losing tons of viewers

I think there can be plenty of reasons. Even ignoring specific things that ESPN has done to Iowa State and the Big 12, it feels like so much of the sports industry is just stupid arguments, trolling, gambling, and only caring about the big teams. Throw in conference realignment and college football having more and more ads, and it’s really easy to want them to take a hit

Maybe this ends with Alphabet purchasing ESPN from Disney? With YTTV becoming the dominant streaming provider, it would make sense for them to separate ESPN from the Disney+ packages. ESPN being sold off has been rumored for years. This seems like the win-win situation for both sides. YTTV focuses on live entertainment and Disney focuses on movies and series for streaming.

That just creates a different potential monopoly problem

It absolutely does. But who’s going to file the lawsuit? Apple? Fubo and Hulu are now under the Disney umbrella, so I don’t see them fighting it this time around. Consolidation has been happening with streaming providers over the past few years and there isn’t really a lot of competition in the market.

While YTTV gets a lot of love and is the largest live streaming provider, they have a long way to go to be the dominant live TV provider. Among the streamers, sub breakout is as follows

YTTV - 10M
Hulu Live - 6M
Fubo - 2M
Sling - 2M

And despite their continued struggles, legacy cable and satellite also still have a chunk of this space.

Charter - 13M
Comcast - 12.5M
DirecTV - 11.3M
Dish - 6.5M

It is a very fragmented market overall. While the parent companies of some of these services are massive, none of the services by themselves are all that large. Which to me seems like that lends the power to the key content owners like Disney. I as a subscriber have lots of switching options to go get that content and funnel that cash back to Disney. But a provider like YTTV is really fighting with one hand tied behind their back trying to attract and retain customers without Disney channels.

Oh, probably no one in the current environment.

Just saying from a consumer perspective it'd still suck

Not that it is a great game but if you want to watch Monday Night Football and have an Antenna the game is on ABC tonight.

Sling offering half off first month of service. Went ahead and took the plunge on that so I'm covered for ESPN if this thing drags on a bit.

Feels like Disney/ESPN last ditch effort before being overtaken. I'm not switching will just hold out and hope these next contracts go to the tech companies. Already at the point of going back to radio to not pay more for ****** TV services B12 coverage. Sell all the rights to anyone not ESPN.

I have YTTV and am holding out as long as possible before going back to Hulu. I have an ESPN+ subscription to watch Cyclone BB. Il give up a few college FB games before giving in to these m*****f******s.

I'm about to just cancel YTTV. I basically only use it for sports.
Is there a free trial out there (Fubo?) that you could use for a week? I'd give it a week and if still no settlement then cancel the YTTV.
