Nov 7, 2020; Ames, Iowa, USA; Iowa State defensive end Eyioma Uwazurike (58) celebrates a sack during their football game at Jack Trice Stadium. Iowa State would go on to win 38-31. Mandatory Credit: Brian Powers-USA TODAY Sports

There wasn’t anything conventional about Iowa State’s nail-eviscerating and ulcer-inducing 38-31 victory over pesky Baylor on Saturday night.

That game was utterly terrifying but in a fun, championship sort of way (if that makes sense).

Iowa State is technically now in sole possession of first place in the Big 12 with three regular-season games remaining (It’s important to point out that it is only because Oklahoma State has played one fewer game than the Cyclones. The Cowboys own a tiebreaker over Iowa State.).

Think about how sick everybody would have been had Iowa State not come back and won that football game? The Cyclones had little to gain in this game, but everything to lose.

The Cyclones fought through every inch of...

As far as your 3rd down point, I had that thought a few times watching games yesterday. It may very well end up (as we've seen in high school sports, and Clemson?) that covid could win/lose games. It's something Iowa State needs to stay on top of for sure.

So GREAT to see Kene having some success this year.
Almost a Jarvis West what if he was healthy for 4 years type of career.

@ChrisMWilliams any word on Milton?

Couldn't believe how many people on here were calling for Dekkers...
You have the all team, everything, leading qb, he had a rough half... but people want to pull him for a guy who's literally thrown 2 collegent passes in garbage time???

Didn't read it, but I'm sure the gameday thread was full of the usual suspects. We are 5-1 and some people can do nothing but ***** at every sign of adversity. Brock is 16-6 in the Big 12 as a starter (plus the 1 he won against OSU but didn't start) That blows any quarterback at ISU's record's away and we don't have a soft every two years Big 12 North schedule to pad our results anymore. Fans cannot cause a team to take the jump to the "next level", coaches, players and ADs do that. Fans can provide positive support in good times and bad that can lift a team and effect recruiting and that is it. Not this year with the attendance limits, but we could also stand to make noise on every defensive down, not just 4th down. Jack Trice would truly be a hard place to play if we did this every game.

I will be holding my breath for the next couple of weeks. If ISU is to get infected by any opponent in the league Baylor seems to be the odds on favorite. Hopefully with the problems they have had in the past there is no one left of the team who hasn't already had it.

People were calling for Purdy after he ran one read option play for no gain against Akron his freshman year. There were literally people on here saying they "liked what they saw from him". It's always going to be like that.

Agree. I recall a QB who we absolutely pasted, but is now one of the top QBs in the NFL. Purdy's throws were just slightly off. He'll be just fine IMO.

I really don't mind the first INT or the one he threw against KU (I think?) Taking a shot down the field against one-on-one coverage is a good thing, even if you don't hit it. And if they pick it off, it's a average length punt. It's the short ones that flip the field or get returned that are backbreakers.

I agree on the first pass. Took a shot. Safety made a good play. Scates could have helped him out and knocked it down, or made a better play on the ball.
I was at the game and didn't see a great replay, but the pass to Chase looked horrible. Way behind him. Even if he doesn't get his hand on it, it was probably picked off.
The pick six looked like a bad decision. DEnd was in his face and he tried to force the ball to Akers. That's a long throw from the far hash. These are the plays where he's trying to do too much. Just take the sack or throw the ball away.

I felt if Brock threw one more int MC would have to pull him. Not because I think Dekkers is better but it was just one of those games where the QB1 just didn't have it for whatever reason. I like Brock and think he's a good QB based on ISU standards but if you look at him objectively he's not so good that he can't be replaced.

What he has going for him is his leadership and moxie. He does have some savviness when the play breaks down but he also has shown to make poor decisions. He doesn't have particular strong arm and doesn't throw a good deep ball. He is above average accuracy wise but also leaves a lot yardage on the field with ball placement causing the receiver to adjust that results in the receiver to fall trying to catch the ball or getting tackled where a better ball would lead to bigger plays. He does have some wiggle and above average speed but isn't overly athletic. This may sound like I'm banging on Brock but just being objective.

What he does have is a strong mind. He is able to forget his previous mistakes and go to the next play. That first half might have broken a lot of QBs where the coach would have had no choice but to replace him for the remainder of the game. Campbell knew that Purdy could come back from that atrocious first half.

Throwing 3 picks in a half should result in sitting out a series to recollect. Granted, one of them was a 50/50 ball. We are extremely lucky to have won a game with 4 total turnovers, and 3 of them originated from the QB position.

That said, Purdy turned it around on his own. Second half was infinitely better.
