Where they love the governor
I was in Kinnick for that game. At the time, I was still a Hawk fan, but knew I wanted to be an engineer and end up at ISU.

The ride home with my dad was the quietest drive I'd been on, even including the game where it was snowing and we left early because Ohio State blocked a punt in the end zone and scored a touchdown.

The unthinkable had happened for Fry-era fans.

I remember this game (ISU at Iowa 1998) like yesterday. I was at a batchalor party in Minneapolis. Our group was mix of Cyclone and Hawkeye fans. There was a golf outing scheduled for the time of the game. I skipped that and went to Champs bar next to our downtown hotel. The other guys made fun of me for wanting to watch the game, they all knew it would be a waste of time as ISU wasn't going to get their @sses handed to them. So I was at the bar by myself, there was a Wisconsin game watch in there too. As the game unfolded I couldn't believe what I was watching. I went back the room after the game and the phone rang. The guys were on the way back from the golf outing and wanted to know the score, I said 27-9. My Cyclone buddy who was on the phone said we didn't do to bad, I said no, we won 27-9. They were all calling me a liar. Finally they all came filing into the hotel room to check the tv and wait for the scores at the bottom of the screen. When it flashed up there the cyclone fans in the group were both celebrating and kicking themselves that had missed the game. The Iowa fans...stunned.

Really good read.

I was there. Never forget it.

I was there in the stands with my 6 year old son. I received the tickets from a Hawkeye fan that I had changed days off for in the past. I had Saturdays off and he had Mondays.

On a side note I am also a Red Sox fan and took my son to Fenway the last week of the regular season in 2004. We watched the Sox lose to Baltimore. My son’s middle name is Yaz and a PR guy for the Sox got us in 4 hours early to the game to watch the Sox batting practice. Johnny Damon came over and took a picture with my son. They gave him an autographed baseball from Yaz. We went on a tour of Fenway and my son did an interview on NESN on the wall during the 7th inning stretch. After the game the movie “Fever Pitch” did a scene where Drew Barrymore ran around a Johnny Damon look alike. It was quite the trip.

That’s a cool story man

I was a senior in high school working in the diesel shop at the 76 truckstop in Altoona. It was a slow night and I had the game on the radio and remember being just shocked the whole time as Davis ran all over them. It was great.

I was 7 at the time. I don’t remember anything about the game. Shortly after the game, my dad took me to the ISU Bookstore to pick something up for himself. As we’re walking in, I notice Cy’s head floating above the sunroof of a car fist pumping immediately followed by a police car pulling the Cy over.

It was my freshman year it ISU. I’d kind of fallen off on following College Football, and wasn’t paying much attention. As a non-Iowan, I kind of missed the memo on the CyHawk rivalry. I was working at the ISU foundation, dialing for dollars from alumni. They kept updating the score in our call center. I ended up missing the game completely, but did see the goal posts floating in Lake Laverne and was more than happy to join in on the partying that night.

They tore down the goalposts at Jack Trice even though the game was at Iowa?

Iirc they did tear them down in '99 when ISU won again in Ames.

I remember several attempts on the goalposts and Jack Trice, but I think they were indestructible while I was there in the late 90s/early 00s. I remember someone passing a big crescent wrench up to a guy on the crossbar after the Nebraska game in 2002. He got one bolt off before they started hauling people down.

Was at the game. Weird game, just total ass kicking.
yeah, the score was not represntative how bad we kicked their @ss. Could have hung a couple of more on them, but DMac was conservative and far more classy than Fry so he didn't run it up. I remember late in the 4rth we were driving, they couldn't stop us, and were getting ready to score, but we just decided to run out the clock instead of pile on like Fry did to us the year before.

I was in KC at the alumni watch party. I think I left early because I couldn’t take one more heartbreak.

Right but I'm wondering why goalposts were in Lake Laverne in 1998 if that happened; the game was in Iowa City.

Someone had some cajones to go in there after ISU won an afternoon away game, haha.

Stadium was locked, so they hit the practice field instead.

Stadium posts haven't come down since Baylor '97.

Hit the practice field, carried the posts and tossed them into Lake Laverne, if I remember correctly. I was a freshman living in Helser at the time.

It really was a big win, it probably bought Mac a couple years and allowed things to keep improving. If that win never happened, it’s possible Mac doesn’t make it and we never take that step.
