Didn't catch it. Was just at home being a high schooler...was probably fishing.

It was cool and fun for ISU to send Hayden out like that but I hate how that was the 'turn the corner' moment for the ISU program as it's what Hawk fans point to any time ISU wins the game.

I've had friends say the same thing for the basketball game over the years.
I mean, it kinda had to be. Losing 15 straight to your "rival" is a massive albatross to be carrying around as a program. Beating Nebraska would've been cool, but beating Iowa had to be a priority if we were ever going to make any noise in this state. Thank god we put 5 of those together. It changed ISU football and the ISU fanbase.

We've beaten them plenty of times since that it's not a big shock. The biggest thing we're missing is a few of those late Hayden years for Kirk. They went 4-8 in 2012, but have otherwise been a winning program. A lot of the fans I grew up with have never seen Iowa do what they did from 98-00, when they went 7-27 in 3 years. They hit the jackpot with Fry and Ferentz.

Wherever I go, there I am.
Fishing with a buddy who was a Hawk fan. We got in the car near the end of the game, and I could scarcely believe it. I may have been more shocked than he was, but we agreed it was a big deal.

Yeah it was definitely a needed thing for the program to expand....it just landed with the fanbase that 25 years later, still can't handle it.

Not exactly sure.
Best man in a wedding. I watched the first half and then Drove to the wedding. Would go out to the car and get updates on the radio.

I too remember where I was, but after some reflection….let’s do this….is it the most important Iowa State football game ever??…what’s better…think about impact and future results….let’s go all talk radio and figure it out. It is a message board after all.

I was in the mall in Iowa City killing time before my brother's birthday party in I.C. It was SWEET to walk through the mall in Cyclone gear that day!

Came over from Ames with two of my friends to party with some IC friends on Friday. We weren't even going to the game and had planned to head home that day. Buddy was trying to get me to stay another night because he was trying to hook up with this girl. Tooled around IC for a bit during the game and told him if the Cyclones win we'll stay. This was having no knowledge of what was going on.

Heading back to our friend's house, two girls pulled up next to us and said go Clones after seeing my ISU sticker in my back window. We were like "Ok." and they said "No, they're winning." Confused as hell, I searched for a radio station to find the game. Gary Dolphin was saying the Hawks need a big stop here and then it was the end of the 3rd quarter and they hadn't said the score yet. We made it back to the house and just got out of the car and were playing with our friend's dog when we see the group that went to the game walking up to the house. Wondering why they would ever leave a game early, my buddy shouted "How about them Hawkeyes?" and 5 people simultaneously shouted F-you! Confused, I'm like, "What's the score?". 27-3, they shout. My buddy and I ran into their house and turned on the TV and saw it was currently 27-9 late in the 4th quarter. Turned to my buddy and said "Welp. Looks like were staying".

We partied that night with those guys and the majority of them we mostly cool with it. Most were like, well, we've won the last 15 years, you can have one every now and then.

I was in Iowa City in 2002 for big party weekend for a few friends' 21st birthdays. LOTS of good ribbing/**** talking all weekend and I couldn't shut up if you paid me after the 2nd half but it was all in fun.

Watched the 2005 game with the same group at a bar in C.R. I was much more subdued but it was funny being the only one clapping as ISU put a stamp on it.

I was at home in NW IA and just hanging out in my room watching the game. I remember that day being really hot and Danny Mac absolutely wrecked his khaki's. I had something going on and didn't turn the game on until the second half and my jaw about hit the floor when I saw the score. I kept waiting for Iowa to make a run at it but it just never happened. I remember going downstairs and telling my parents the score and they didn't believe me. That was back when the annual CyHawk was not must watch TV unless you were a Hawk fan. Needless to say they put the game on and enjoyed watching 15 years of misery come to an end.

I remember this game (ISU at Iowa 1998) like yesterday. I was at a batchalor party in Minneapolis. Our group was mix of Cyclone and Hawkeye fans. There was a golf outing scheduled for the time of the game. I skipped that and went to Champs bar next to our downtown hotel. The other guys made fun of me for wanting to watch the game, they all knew it would be a waste of time as ISU wasn't going to get their @sses handed to them. So I was at the bar by myself, there was a Wisconsin game watch in there too. As the game unfolded I couldn't believe what I was watching. I went back the room after the game and the phone rang. The guys were on the way back from the golf outing and wanted to know the score, I said 27-9. My Cyclone buddy who was on the phone said we didn't do to bad, I said no, we won 27-9. They were all calling me a liar. Finally they all came filing into the hotel room to check the tv and wait for the scores at the bottom of the screen. When it flashed up there the cyclone fans in the group were both celebrating and kicking themselves that had missed the game. The Iowa fans...stunned.

Really good read.

After reading this, it felt like we were still using the rotary phone in 1998

If I remember right McCarney read a letter from a former player the night before. Or maybe it was a player on the team that was a senior but was injured. Supposedly that letter made everyone believe they could win and end the streak. Does anyone remember this or the context?

The article says is was from Marc Cortez who was recovering from surgery.

My dad scored two tickets and we sat in the NE corner among Hawk fans. Before the game we were outside Kinnick and the ISU team bus pulled up. We saw McCarney lead his team out and my dad commented they're really focused and serious getting off the bus, heading to the locker room. Just by that, he thought it would be a good close game. It was nice to see the Iowa fans streaming out of the stands in the 4th every time Iowa couldn't make progress to get into the game.

IIRC, we won that game, as well as in '80, and '82, my first 3 years at ISU.
In context of CyHawk that was a good stretch to be at ISU!

I started in '83, so obviously didn't experience a W during my time at ISU :(

Something else that just occurred to me, kind of weird - '98 was the first ISU win over Iowa that I actually watched as it was happening. I saw '78 game on tape-delay -- I think it might've aired in real-time but I was helping family member with a home project that day. For some reason I didn't see or hear 1980 game, and '81 and '82 I heard on radio.

I was a freshman at ISU in 98, probably sleeping off a hangover as I remember being woke up to someone down the hall yelling "holly sh** we're ahead of Iowa!" I woke up and turned on the TV and it was only 7-0 so wasn't too excited given ISU had lost 15 straight in the series. As the game went on though it was just electric in our dorm floor as it because apparent ISU was going to break the losing streak. Later that day I remember a group had tried to break into Jack Trice to tear down the goal posts but they had it locked down good instead they tore down the goal posts on the practice field then marched it down Lincoln Way and tossed it into Lake Laverne. Could also tell when people that had gone to the game got back into Ames as lots of honking and cheering. It took me an extra semester to graduate but I always point out that while I was at ISU we did not lose to Iowa in FB all 5 games I was a student.

I was in the last row of the north end zone in Kinnick. Only my second time attending a game there (Iowa was crushed by Oregon in 1989 the first time I attended).

Terribly hot day, but I never really felt that the game was in doubt even though I grew up not knowing what it was like or even that is was possible ISU could beat Iowa in football. Dominated the line of scrimmage. Will never forget running onto the field after the game.
