What will they sell next year?

I would not blame him for switching, who would want to play for our offense? The last two weeks has been historically bad.

Hats off to the marketing folks. They've done a great job filling seats. Messages of hope, one direction, Paul Rhoads' passion and energy, and rejuvenation really resonated with our fan base. Especially the casual fans...dare I say bandwagon fans?

But there's a problem. We're 1-5 and just suffered our worst defeat in many, many years, 71-7.

'What's left to sell?' is right. The Paul Rhoads era isn't new anymore. His being proud and passionate isn't saving us from losses to inferior opponents (Tulsa in the bowl, UNI this year...you see UNI has THREE losses?). We're not moving forward. We're taking a GIANT step back this year.

I hear a lot how we're a young team. But guess what? So are a lot of other teams. You see how many young guys Baylor had playing last night when the score got out of hand?

Bottom line, the marketing people can only do so much. Now it's time for the team to do their part on the field. That's what will sell this program moving forward.

Good post. I agree.

I also get sick of hearing how young we are and injured we are. TT's starting QB was injured for the game against us, and a true freshmen came in and threw for 400 yds on us. He didn't look like a deer in headlights like Richardson and Rohach have looked. And no, I don't blame Richardson and Rohach for that look either. I think Mess has got them so afraid to do anything that they look scared.

We are young, but so are other teams that at least look halfway decent. And every team in the country has injuries.

If you are Messingham, what can you point to in your time as OC here as a reason why you shouldn't be fired immediately? I don't see any. Wally has a lot of things he can point to as reasons he isn't completely incompetent.

Without some assistant coaching changes, especially on offense, I don't see what they can "sell" next year. Lazard? That isn't enough for me. These coaches will find a way to make him look terrible too.

Personally, I have had season tickets the last 5 years. We are in a position where we probably cannot afford football and basketball season tickets, and to be frank, I'd much rather have basketball season tickets, especially after this year. I imagine we will probably let our football tickets go and pick up a pair of basketball tickets next year.

You people are absolutely amazing. There are thousands of fans that have been through this before and realize that if the program is moving in the right direction, patience and "real" support will be there for the coaches and the AD. Coaches, recruits, and players realize and appreciate that.

It's not like we've been a football factory in the past, simply reloading from year to year. We play one of the toughest schedules in the country almost every year. We also play in one of the strongest conferences in the country that will stay that way for decades to come. There are going to be hiccups and set-backs, just ask Texas. If you can't handle it, there is always some new kid on the block somewhere else, go jump on their bandwagon.

Will it hurt losing some fair weather fans? Sure, but you can, and will be replaced in time, and you won't be missed in the long run. I watched a little of the Auburn game yesterday, and the announcers talked about how last year they hardly had anybody in the stands at home games. You wanna be those guys? Go ahead, and don't hit your *** on the turnstile on the way out. We'll stick around like we always do, cheering on our teams, good or bad, and hoping for the best. Realizing that these young men work their collective butts off for their education, for a chance to play at a higher level, and for us the fans, the one's who have had season tickets for decades, not years, and LOVE THE CYCLONES, no matter what!!!

Are we disappointed? Sure as #### we are, but we know the sun will shine on us again, maybe even this season, maybe not. In the past, successful and not-so-successful coaches, (see Cheezy), have used our program as a stepping stone to what they thought were bigger and better things. They may be bigger, but I certainly don't think they're better. Firing coaches because they only won 9 or 10 games, not allowing your recently fired coach on the bus from the airport, wantonly bending or breaking the rules to achieve immediate results. That's not a program I find better by any means. That's not our way, and I hope it never is. I'm damn proud to be a Cyclone, and always will be.

CPR is here 'cause he wants to be, and I for one, am very glad he is. The man has passion and sincerity you rarely see anymore. Even in defeat, he garners us positive publicity on a national scale. When he wins, and I truly believe he will win, it will be the right way, our way, THE CYCLONE WAY!!!

You can find success in places other than wins and losses. Players leave Ames and ISU better than when they got here, and not just as athletes, but as young men ready and prepared to go out into the real world. They too, leave us a little better off for having known them and watching them grow. The fact that our program is known for having one of the premier tail-gate environs in the country, a place where even opponents' fans are treated with respect and friendliness. The fact that when we do win, (and yes sometimes we do), it was done fairly.

Our legacy is, should be, and will be, as a program and a fan base that loves to win, but realizes that true results are gauged in many, many ways, and not just in conference or national championships.

When we experience hard times, don't get down, be proud, very proud, that YOU ARE A CYCLONE!!!

I always knew this year would be rough and next year would be the next big step so I am not as shocked as many here are. I do hope something is done with OC before next season.
If ISU has a great year next year, will all the crybabies who make meltdown thread after meltdown thread just permiban themselves?

And what happens if The Mayor has a bad year or two (I don't see it happening, but anything's possible), you gonna jump off that ship, too?

I see a SEZ, with hot tub suites and recliners like KU. With satellite tv for each one so they can actually watch a game where someone wins.

I don't think people would jump off the Mayor's ship just based on 1 or 2 bad seasons. Hoiberg has given us some great seasons. So he's entitled to a bad year or two. Rhoads, on the hand has given us great games, but really not great seasons. We've seen average seasons and now a bad season from him. He's still the best guy to lead Iowa State. But he needs to make changes on his staff.

Define "great" seasons. ISU hasn't finished in the top 25 and only won 1 game in the NCAA tourney. So I guess we tied for 32 twice? I personally love the way our basketball team plays and the coaching staff but let's call a spade a spade.
rhoads has exceeded expectations every year he has been here minus this year and people call for his job. It's a joke that shouldn't even be explored.

People rip on Hoibergs coaching all year too. It's mind blowing how dumb some people here are.

Hoiberg has made 2 straight NCAA tourneys and has finished in the top 4 of the big 12 twice too. People respect Hoiberg, all across America. Hoiberg has been a head coach for 3 seasons and already has a recognizable brand in college basketball: scoring tons of points and shooting 3s like no one else can.

What has Rhoads done besides take us to 3 CRAP bowl games? Oh wow the liberty bowl, thats so exciting. Pinstripe bowl? Awesome reward for an incredible season. 7-6 finish 4 years ago? One for the record books. Mack Brown fires his defensive coordinator for allowing his defense to get embarrassed. Rhoads defends Messingham weekly. Nut up Rhoads, or your going to find yourself on the hot seat. I'm sick of losing and I'm sick of being delusional about this coaching staff. The upsets here and there pull me in, but in the long run they mean absolutely nothing. Seriously, upsettting a top 15 team means crap when you finish 6-7

If they put that on him....that is more of a reason for me to not give them ****. No freshman needs that, I don't care who the **** they think are.

Adding Lazard and Montgomery should be a huge plus for this team. Gives us length over the top on the ends, a playmaker in Bundrage and some decent slot guys with West, Ecby and Harris. But then again, none of this means anything unless that OLine comes out like beasts next year.

Our A.D. took a tremendous gamble by showing Coach Dan the door. The football program suffered a serious setback all because the A.D. was not confident Coach Dan could take ISU to the next level. This is not about the football coaches, the question is whether or not the A.D. should be held accountable for a gamble which is looking increasingly disastrous. The A.D. made a big picture move to take the football program to the next level and the big picture is not looking good. The problem is not the coaches--the problem is an A.D. who blew up a fragile football program only to leave the fans now wishing the program could be back to where it was when the A.D. declared "not good enough".

Message:
Sounds shockingly like what we give Iowa hoops crap about

If you long for the McCarney days, you are certifiably insane. We ROUTINELY got beat by 30+ points week in and week out. We get drilled by the #6 team in the nation and people are spouting off this crap? That we want to go back to the days under McCarney? Give me a break.

You think our offense is bad now, check out the post I made about 2 of the last 3 seasons under Dan McCarney: http://cyclonefanatic.com/forum/football/177292-we-better-off.html#post3636804

We got killed nearly EVERY conference game. And you want that back???

In 2003, we scored 71 points in the entire Big 12 season. That's 8.9 points per game. We've scored 72 points in the first 3 games of this season, and that's with scoring 7 points this weekend.
We scored 115 points in Big 12 play in 2006. Or 14.4 ppg.

You are delusional my friend.

I think you misundestood what I was saying. Essentially, we can afford either basketball season tickets or football season tickets, not both. Would I like to have both? Sure. But that's not in the cards with two young kids.

For the last 5 years I've enjoyed my football season tickets-- the games have been fun, we've played some real good teams competitiely and I've had no trouble sacrificing my entire Saturday to go the games. However, with the product I've seen this year, and seeing the excitement around Fred's teams, I think I'd prefer basketball tickets. I imagine my situation isn't too unlike many others. When the football is good and the games are competitive I have no problem spending the money and sacrificing the time to go to games. When it's as bad as it has been, I'd just as soon put the money towards something else, and get some things done around the house while I watch on TV. I suppose that makes me a bandwagoner, but I just can't justify spending the money and time to watch what we've had to watch this year.
