Hats off to the marketing folks. They've done a great job filling seats. Messages of hope, one direction, Paul Rhoads' passion and energy, and rejuvenation really resonated with our fan base. Especially the casual fans...dare I say bandwagon fans?
But there's a problem. We're 1-5 and just suffered our worst defeat in many, many years, 71-7.
'What's left to sell?' is right. The Paul Rhoads era isn't new anymore. His being proud and passionate isn't saving us from losses to inferior opponents (Tulsa in the bowl, UNI this year...you see UNI has THREE losses?). We're not moving forward. We're taking a GIANT step back this year.
I hear a lot how we're a young team. But guess what? So are a lot of other teams. You see how many young guys Baylor had playing last night when the score got out of hand?
Bottom line, the marketing people can only do so much. Now it's time for the team to do their part on the field. That's what will sell this program moving forward.
How about if we just don't "assume" that?Assuming that we finish this year with 1 or 2 wins (total), and very likely 1, how in the world do they try to sell tickets next year? What is there to sell?
Hopefully, we can get some good laundry stories.
Don't step on his meltdown. After all, we need a dozen threads crying about the same thing or all is lost. How about if we just don't "assume" that?
Personally, I have had season tickets the last 5 years. We are in a position where we probably cannot afford football and basketball season tickets, and to be frank, I'd much rather have basketball season tickets, especially after this year. I imagine we will probably let our football tickets go and pick up a pair of basketball tickets next year.
People rip on Hoibergs coaching all year too. It's mind blowing how dumb some people here are.And what happens if The Mayor has a bad year or two (I don't see it happening, but anything's possible), you gonna jump off that ship, too?
And done by fat chicks with big warts on their hands.

Define "great" seasons. ISU hasn't finished in the top 25 and only won 1 game in the NCAA tourney. So I guess we tied for 32 twice? I personally love the way our basketball team plays and the coaching staff but let's call a spade a spade.I don't think people would jump off the Mayor's ship just based on 1 or 2 bad seasons. Hoiberg has given us some great seasons. So he's entitled to a bad year or two. Rhoads, on the hand has given us great games, but really not great seasons. We've seen average seasons and now a bad season from him. He's still the best guy to lead Iowa State. But he needs to make changes on his staff.
..... when the A.D. declared "not good enough".

Good post. I agree.
I also get sick of hearing how young we are and injured we are. TT's starting QB was injured for the game against us, and a true freshmen came in and threw for 400 yds on us. He didn't look like a deer in headlights like Richardson and Rohach have looked. And no, I don't blame Richardson and Rohach for that look either. I think Mess has got them so afraid to do anything that they look scared.
We are young, but so are other teams that at least look halfway decent. And every team in the country has injuries.
If you are Messingham, what can you point to in your time as OC here as a reason why you shouldn't be fired immediately? I don't see any. Wally has a lot of things he can point to as reasons he isn't completely incompetent.
Without some assistant coaching changes, especially on offense, I don't see what they can "sell" next year. Lazard? That isn't enough for me. These coaches will find a way to make him look terrible too.
Our A.D. took a tremendous gamble by showing Coach Dan the door. The football program suffered a serious setback all because the A.D. was not confident Coach Dan could take ISU to the next level. This is not about the football coaches, the question is whether or not the A.D. should be held accountable for a gamble which is looking increasingly disastrous. The A.D. made a big picture move to take the football program to the next level and the big picture is not looking good. The problem is not the coaches--the problem is an A.D. who blew up a fragile football program only to leave the fans now wishing the program could be back to where it was when the A.D. declared "not good enough".

Sounds shockingly like what we give Iowa hoops crap about
