What supplements do you take?

To expand on this - whey protein is the cheapest complete protein (contains all amino acids) and typically easiest to digest for most people. "Whey isolate" is just the protein component. "Whey concentrate" is the protein plus some of the natural milk sugars and fats. If you're bulking, whey concentrate may be the better option. If you're cutting, whey isolate may make it easier to keep calories in check. Some companies will sell a blend.
I like to take mass gainers when I bulk because it saves me money from buying extra food and I can never consume enough good carbs by diet alone. I wish I had more diet discipline. I drink way too much milk.

Which brand of B-Complex are you taking?
Nature's Bounty B-Complex, regular strength. They also make a Super B-Comp that has even higher amounts, but I didn't think I needed that.

Nature's Bounty Vitamin B-Complex, Time Released Supplement with Folic Acid Plus Vitamin C, Supports Energy Metabolism and Nervous System Health, 125 Count https://a.co/d/hgbbtwh

I take Testosterone. Have for 8 years. If you are over 40 and you are not. You really need to investigate doing it. It will change your life. I am not sure why it's not more popular. Maybe it is and people are just embarrassed to admit it. My doctor encouraged it years ago. Now my nurse just orders my prescription. So easy. I don't take the shot. I take the pills that melt under your tongue.
I recently started taking the testosterone shot after labs confirmed my testosterone and my doctor prescribed it and it has made a big difference for me. My mood is better and I have been sleeping better too. I also seem to have more energy. I also take Fish oil and a multivitamin.

Yeah it's totally a game changer. It also helps in about everything I do in life. I also take multi vits and other things but the Testosterone has been the biggest game changer.

Honest question - I know a guy who is constantly taking Amino Essentials (or something like that), is always mixing it to drink. But he doesn't work out and he's not fit. What's the point of taking something like that if you don't work out?

The only legitimate reason would be if he was lacking them in his normal diet or was going through a specific treatment for a condition. Realistically it’s just more expensive urine for an individual like that without an underlying issue.

That's what I thought. Figured it's an expensive way to look cool.

I’m fat and unathletic, but at least I lift “heavy” three times a week. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t be supplementing protein.

I really wish insurance companies would cover early life DNA sequencing to look for markers and mutations. We did the GeneSight testing for our boys giving all my and their mental health issues and it was enlightening. For example, we have the MTHFR mutation (I like to remember it as ************) which greatly impacts folic acid levels. Those in turn greatly impact efficacy of many medicines and supplements.

Given all my non mental health issues (heart attack, 5 strokes, 3 this year, neurological issues, etc) and lack of any knowledge of health conditions on my biological father’s side, we’re paying out of pocket for Sequencing.com (100% vs our current 23 and Me’s .1% decoding) decoding and reporting.

Proactive testing of this kind, as well as more rigorous annual exam testing could save a ton of money in the long run, not to mention extend lives.

Glad I found this thread. I’ve been trying to figure out the best supplements to take and so far I’ve settled on the following:

Equate Mens Multivitamin - I compared the label to the Mens 1 A Day bottle and they’re exactly the same. The only difference is the equate version has vitamin K.

D3 - 4000 IU + Multivitamin has 1000 IU so a total of 5000 IU

K2 - 100 mcg

Magnesium Glycinate - 300 mg + Multivitamin has 120 mg so a total of 420 mg.

Wild Alaskan Fish Oil (Kirkland) - I’m not sure this is the best one to take but I have a whole bottle of it so I’m going to take it until it’s gone. Would like to know what a better option is that is high in Omega 3’s as well as EPA and DHA.

I used to take Super B Complex but cut that out as I get the full recommend dietary allowance from my multivitamin.

Any other suggestions for a relatively healthy guy in his mid 40’s that also takes atorvastatin and fenofibrate for cholesterol and triglycerides (thanks to genetics)?

There's not much cheaper as a protein option either, 30g protein for 1.13 a serving is what I just bought. 30g of plain greek yogurt or cottage cheese is 2.75 or more a serving. Eggs are a great cheaper option. Chicken breast is comparable in price if you get the $2/lb sale but most meats run higher. Beans are one other cheaper option but can only eat so many of those.
Eggs are now $4.50 a dozen

I love this topic as I believe our health is highly, highly impacted by diet and certain supplements are better than prescribed meds or great preventative measures.

I take a lot of the same regiment, but have a 10,000 IU D3 pill that includes 100mcg K2, 20mg Zinc, 3.4 mg B6 and a little magnesium.

Vitamin C in a time released form is also good.

My current conundrum is taking atorvastatin. It lowers my cholesterol, but also feel it creates joint/muscle soreness. Which my doctor (and a lot of doctors) discount as not being related to taking the statin. There is a lot online that anyone taking a statin should also take CoQ10. I have tried CoQ10, but hard to tell if it had an impact on my muscle soreness.

The other supplement that seems to be trending for general use is creatine. Haven't gone there yet and done much research.

For the past few months I have been taking creatine along with multivitamin and fish oil. From what I've read, it helps with brain function. Hard to qualify if that's helping or not. Scale went up a couple pounds so I'm definitely retaining more water and some muscle.

Just an update to this. I switched to getting these pills inserted into my upper butt cheek that last about 6 months and it’s so much better. Kind of sore for a few days but totally worth it. . The vitamins I take daily are

A multi vitamin
Magnesium
Fish oil
3000 mg of cherry extract pill
D3
Zinc
Vitamin C
5htp
L-theanine
Creatine

That’s it. Take half in the morning and the other half at night

I’ve read a lot of books and listened to a lot of podcasts in the past few months and the general theme seems to be that statins don’t provide much, if any, value in the grand scheme of things. I stopped taking mine (atorvastatin 40mg) and my blood work a few weeks ago showed no real difference from when I was taking it.
I’ve decided to work on my diet and exercise and mix up my supplement routine to see what benefits I get from that. I dropped the multivitamin and am going to take the following, D3/K2, Omega 3 fish oil, magnesium biglycinate, CoQ10, Zinc, and monohydrate creatine. I’m using the SuppCo app to determine which are the best brands of those supplements to take. Thorne and Sports Research both get great reviews.
I’ve stopped drinking (sucks, but I should have done it a long time ago) and am trying to cut out sugar and the processed garbage foods. Planning to go back in for bloodwork in 3 months and see what my numbers look like after making these lifestyle changes.
