What did McKay d this time?

People on CF continue to repeat that it's Steve Prohm's program and he says he's "building a program", which evidently justifies his actions in his mind. No and No. It's not your program CSP, you're simply a well-compensated custodian of a program that was already well-established long before you arrived. The program belongs to the university and the fans!

Just when I thought maybe people were coming around, and a night sleeping on it may have allowed some perspective on the situation....but nope.

The program may belong to the university, but there is no doubt THIS TEAM is Prohm's. He makes the decisions, he's responsible for their actions, and it's Prohm that is liable for any consequences. Therefore, he can run it however he seems fit.

Why does it matter that he didn't play? Why do people care so much and have to know exactly what happened? Did any of you think that maybe he is protecting McKay? Maybe he tweaked his knee or maybe he did something stupid like be was late for a meeting or shoot around...maybe he was late or missed a class...why does it matter? Iowa State won...McKay was on the bench and was cheering on his teammates...just let this one go.

If McKay just skipped class or something small like that I see only one logical reason for Prohm to keep it hidden. Prohm is testing McKay to see if he slips up on Twitter or tells someone who will inform the press. McKay needs to learn to keep his mouth shut and Twitter feed bare.

Bump, for those still freaking out, thinking they deserve an explanation.

If Ashton fouled out with no points and three rebounds and didn't play the next game would anyone make a peep? 24-7 sports journalism has got bad

Exactly. If CSP did bring him in, who sits? Nader and Burton were playing lights out. For those wanting him to spell those two, if he had for 5-10, then we'd complain he didn't get enough minutes.

This thread is such a joke.

First off, Prohm doesn't owe any of us, or the media, anything. This is his team. He was hired to win basketball games, and how he goes about that is up to him.

Second, it sure is funny how quickly people forget the Fred Hoiberg era. He lost a lot of games he shouldn't have too. Does Drake ring a bell? How about all the Texas Tech losses? Or the infamous UAB fiasco? One could make the argument that Fred underperformed with the talent he had. And then he left Prohm a team with no bench whatsoever, and a couple head cases to boot.

And finally, what about McKay? It's OBVIOUS that this had nothing to do with an injury or wanting to give Jameel rest. Prohm would have said we were resting him if that were the case, but he didn't, and he didn't seem all that pleased about having to sit him.

If he wanted to give Jameel some rest, he would have just limited his minutes instead of not playing him at all. Why would you want to create this whole controversy if nothing happened?

We all know that McKay is in the doghouse with Prohm. So he's obviously on a very short leash. It probably wasn't going to take much for him to get another game suspension at this point. So just doing something stupid like being a half hour late to practice or something would be more than a sufficient reason for Prohm to discipline him further since he was on such thin ice to begin with. Or maybe it was something kind of embarrassing or something and Prohm didn't want to make Jameel look silly by telling the world what he did?

Would you want your head coach telling the whole world something you did that was kind of embarrassing? No. You would want him to just say it was a "coaches decision" and move on.

As to Fran Fraschilla... I love Fran Fraschilla, but his tweet was stupid. It's never "too late" in the season to be making a point. So just because it's crunch time in the season, then all discipline should just be thrown out the window? Really Fran? Just because it's late in the season, you should just let the players run the roost and be allowed to break team rules? Whatever.

I appreciate Prohm trying to bring some discipline back to this program that has been lost over the Hoiberg era. I'm sick of watching this team underperform year after year because the players don't listen to their head coach and play a really stupid brand of basketball. Time to turn that around IMO, and I think Prohm is trying to do that. So I will reserve negative assessment of him this early in his tenure here. I'm not saying he's been perfect, far from it, but I can't blame him for wanting to run a tighter ship here and get everyone to buy in and play as a team instead of 5 individuals.

Someone said that Prohm was getting agitated with the questions of why the reigning defensive player of the year didn't play tonight when he wasn't suspended. What's to hide? He didn't practice well, he has a sore knee, ... Coaches decision and no answer leads to Internet guessing and reporters wondering what is going on. People will want to know why he didn't play. What's so hard to understand about that.

So you think you're entitled to know. I don't, just tune in Monday night and you'll have your next answer. You don't even have to wait very long.

But the point is he had no intention on playing. Which is why he was buried at the end of the bench. Also you could tell he knew he wasn't playing. Say coaches decision all you want. But if it walks like a suspension and quacks like a suspension it's probably a suspension.

I'm all for that. But media and social media almost prevent that from happening. By the time he was done, last year's staff had their fill of BDJ, even tho he was a likable guy. Gotta believe McKay is wearing on this year's staff. But they all want him to succeed. My wish for this staff is that they can finish out the year with some determined tough guys and make some more special memories together. Think they've earned it. No matter what happened this season, it was either going to be viewed as Prohm only won because of Fred's guys, or Prohm didn't win enough with the team he was left. Look, I'm not asking for anyone to feel sorry for him, because he has a heck of a job in a Power 5 conference, and he knew what he signed up for. Just saying the Naz situation and the McKay situation haven't exactly been expected nor endearing for an inherited team that already lacked in numbers.

For those of you with all the angst for Prohm, why have you turned on him so quickly? He is playing the cards he was dealt. Is this team really so different than last year at this time? Some things have gone really well, for example we are playing great offense. This particular personnel group will never be great defenders starting with Georges, but that's not what they are. Jameel's issues haven't helped at all, but we had a similar distraction with BDJ last year, a player who was obviously very talented and could have helped us much more than he did. The sky is not falling.
Because we need one more real player for our team if we finish the tourneys like we want.

For the KenPom worshipers (myself not included) this is the best team Iowa State has ever had since that rating gained popularity. In actuality I think it just never liked the pace we won at with Fred, but a lot of people seem to think it means something year after year.
Yep. Does not necessarily translate to wins.

So you think McKay was high?

Unless he was told that he was going to rest for WV. Before he got in the doghouse he would struggle with the quick Saturday to Monday turnarounds. With the way WV rebounds we need him at his best monday where we didn't need him at all on Saturday. Since we don't know of any suspension, it very well could have been a strategic move as well. We very well may never know.

Would Prohm have really risked losing last night just in order to give Jameel some rest?

So let's say TCU is within 2 or 3 points with a couple minutes left last night. Would Prohm have put Jameel in to try to secure the win, or risk losing just to give Jameel some rest?

Jameel was not going to play last night no matter what IMO. Prohm would have taken the loss instead of putting him in IMO. That tells me that Jameel wasn't just resting up for Monday. Because if Prohm would have taken a loss last night just to rest Jameel, that would be inexcusable IMO.

There is something more to this. Jameel isn't buying in yet and is still being selfish IMO, and Prohm is sending a message that he's in charge and Jameel will sit unless he's going to be a team guy.

And that's what bothers me about McKay's tweet last night saying it isn't a "me" problem, it's a "team" problem. I'm not sure how to read that, but I take it that he still doesn't get it at all. It sounds to me like it's definitely a "you" problem Jameel. It's not the team. You need to get your head out of your a** and start playing like you did last year again.

Announcers had a good point about this. Hes a super tall and lanky dude crammed into a seat *** to elbow. There is very few ways you can sit in that situation, and even fewer ways you can sit comfortably. Analyzing body language in that scenario is not suggested.

Now we have body language experts weighing in. This has to be the dumbest thread I've ever read on here.

That's not what his tweet said. The point was that the focus should not have been on him but on the team winning.

Mckay out high fiving team mates going into half time with a smile. Probably resting his knee for WV?

.... and sitting on bench sulking throughout 2nd half, especially after his teammates were scoring baskets.

I miss no-drama Hoiberg. Disciplinary actions were always handled quickly and effectively. This is going on way too long, and obviously Prohm and McKay are not able to resolve the situation.

I just got to the bottom of why he didn't play. I'm not going to post, but I'm pretty sure if we had played Kansas yesterday he would have played. I'd be pretty shocked if he didn't play Monday.
