Wes Miller

I think his name has been mentioned in other threads before, but the more I think about it the more I like Scott Nagy, currently at Wright State and at South Dakota State before that. He's won everywhere he's been and he's still relatively young as well. I think he's worth a look.

He seems to have had sustained success, but why the heck was he at South Dakota State so long??? 21 seasons is a looooong time to hang tight when you aspire to something bigger.

Also, why is he barefoot in his wikipedia photo?

I'm glad people are at least discussing people outside of the circle of TJ and Devries. I get it it's really hard to know what is out there especially when you get into the assistant coaching realm and you don't know exactly that individuals role on the staff.

People that at least are worth talking about in my opinion (I fully admit I am not a expert in any of them)

Mid Major Head Coaches
Porter Moser - Loyola Chicago - He'd be probably at the top of my list watching Loyola play. I think it would be hard to pull him away though (he's been contacted by others in the past and stayed). Would likely continue our ability to recruit Chicago area.
Wes MIller - UNC Greensboro - He's listed in about every up and coming coaching discussion there is. I personally think he's still a little green and there are some questions (no PF assistant experience for one). He's also having kind of a tough year this year (I haven't dug into why) but he belongs in the discussion.
Travis Steele - Xavier - Another one high on my list. No idea how available he would be. Midwest guy.

P5 Assistants - again this is a tough area to evaluate, mainly listing the guys at programs I see listed the most in ready for a head coach position discussion
Brian Michaelson - Gonzaga - I've been a Mark Few fan long before it was cool to be a Mark Few fan. If this guy has learned even a decent amount working for few I'm interested.
Jon Scheyer - Duke - well respected through out basketball. My suspicion is it will be hard to pull him away from the Mid Atlantic region.
Luke Murray - Louisville - I know the least about this one but another name floated around a lot.

Also while we are throwing names out there an interesting guy that I've seen mentioned in up and coming coaching conversations is Ali Farokhmanesh who is currently an assistant at Colorado St and followed Niko from Drake. I don't think he's even close to be in the discussion for the head coaching position, but I'm also of the opinion that one of Prohms failings was the building of his staff. With Ali's Iowa and midwest ties and my understanding is he building a strong recruiting network I wouldn't mind seeing a guy like him on the staff.

I don’t understand discussing anyone but TJ because it will be TJ. Time to wrap our heads around this.

Porter Moser would be a great hire. Doesn’t get much better in terms of X’s and O’s. Former assistant under Barone and Majerus.

I know Ali personally and he's a hell of a human being and comes from a great family. A guy like him would help tremendously.

I don't think $$$ is the only concern with Pollard. It is a concern. He isn't going to break the bank for Sampson or a name like that.

Personally I'm ok with that. As much as I love basketball and miss the days of real Hilton Magic football needs to be the priority for $$$.

Should consider Casey Alexander at Belmont.

Or hire Dawn Staley and make history.

Casey Alexander is an interesting name. I'll admit I haven't watched Belmont, but from a stats standpoint Belmont is playing an offensive style that would be a hell of a lot of fun to watch. I'll check them out some time.

Although Devries seems like he would be a great choice he is from Missouri Valley Drake. I just can't forget MO Valley UNI Greg McDermott. He was also a great choice at the time. Yet he couldn't pull it off at ISU but then does great at Creighton?

Just kind of confusing. I'm not at all saying Devries would go down the same path as Greg McDermott if he could/would come to ISU. Just wondering again why Mac couldn't win here and yet is Coach of the Decade at Creighton?

Can we re-visit this question as it relates to Devries or any other candidate for that matter? What does it take to succeed at Iowa State?

At ISU it isn't all about winning. Johnny had some down years, but had an exciting brand of basketball. Floyd's teams could be boring but at least they had an identity (Defense, rebounding, toughness). My opinion is the next coach needs to establish some kind of team identity, and get players to buy in (player retention). Not saying that they don't need to be able to do other things (e.g. recruiting P6 talent), but using the current team as an example...If Prohm picked one thing...like something as basic as rebounding...they may actually win some games.

Makes sense. Agree. Good post.

Because DeVries played a huge role in changing GMac's coaching and playing style at Creighton. That's why fears of DeVries being another GMac at ISU are baseless.
