WBB: General All-NCAA Thread - Not Team Cyclones Stuff

Don’t know the final numbers. But at one point NU was 13/13 and Iowa was 12/21 in FTs.

Iowa blew icing the game missing free throws. I would love to have either of those teams freshman PGs. Give me Britt Prince or Aaliyah Guyton as PG after Ryan. Can see why she went to Nebraska as starting PG. She would have had to start here to but not at PG initially. She's going to be a BIG star in the Big Ten. 22 pts 7 reb 5 ast 6 stl

Their 2 wins are over 4 of big 10 teams without a conference win too.

Tough schedule. All of their losses are to ranked teams or teams projected to get March invites. And glancing at their schedule it's another six games with March teams, four of those currently ranked teams and three are Top 10. Big Ten is quite good this year with 13 freakin teams *** projected to get NCAA invites.

My homey Gophers have games yet with four ranked teams, all on the road with three being Top 10, and an additional two or three March Madness squads. Iowa gets to get beaten down at home by USC and UCLA, my Gophers get to go to LA for the beatdown.

*** Edit: Some of those are near the bubble and I expect a couple to maybe beat each other out so maybe less than that 13 but still al least ten or more.

wtf Nebraska. It was like they were trying to lose at the end. telling you guys., Iowa women ceiling is 18-19 wins. I think are going to be 18 wins and 8-10 in league play
Crazy to be a bubble team after back to back Final fours and Carlin Clark
They don't have a leader on that team. For the past four years, Clark took over and did everything down the stretch in games while the others were the supporting cast. Now, none of the supporting cast wants to step up and be the person to take over down the stretch. They brought Lucy Olsen in to fill Clark's role, but it doesn't appear she wants the responsibility.

If there is blame to be placed, it would be on Lisa Bluder for allowing Clark to do everything and never letting others have the opportunity at the end of games.

The schedule is not kind to Iowa; of the last 11 games, only three are against teams below them in the Big 10. They are only favored in four (Northwestern, Rutgers, Wisconsin, Washington), and the Washington game is a toss-up. If they were to go 4-7 over the last 11, they would end up 6-12 / 16-13 overall. I think they go 6-5 and finish 8-10 / 18-10, but that is quite the drop-off for them.

Can you really blame her for that? What coach isn't going to lean on their best, most clutch player when the game is on the line? I'd bet we wouldn't have won those games v. Indiana and MSU if someone else was taking that last shot. And to be fair, there were plenty of times in March that Gabby and Kate stepped up late in games with either a huge shot or a key defensive play.

I agree on Lucy, was expecting her to more actively step into that role.

Bored over morning coffee so looking around at some stats and ratings, so some random musings. Sort of spurred some by the Hawk/Husker game last night.
  • Both Iowa and ISU are sitting at 0-4 versus Quad 1. Hawk fans should be pulling for ISU to move up in the NET so they will get a Quad 1 win. And on the flip side of that if they continue to slide our Quad 1 loss to them might turn into a Quad 2 loss.
  • Not a good time for Hawks to be in rebuild mode and having a SOS of #5. Still, unless they have mass portal defections, they will be okay next season good classes for 2024 and 2025.
  • Looked at my Gophers rating stuff some. SOS is #167. They are 16-2 but likely to start dropping with the schedule playing catchup with them. They will end up playing four Top 10 teams on the road. I mean they are playing well but that Big Ten schedule for them, woof!
  • Michigan freshman Olivia Olsen and Syla Swords are averaging 16.0 and 15.1 points per game.
  • Man, I wish we could have pulled off getting either Olivia Olsen or Britt Prince. Would have been a nice recruiting coup. Olsen could have at least stayed home and played for the Gophers.

Yeah, not sure who would be the "go to game closer" for Iowa from last year's squad that would be here this year since they were heavily seniors last year. Bluder riding Clark got them to the champ game TWICE. Doing otherwise would have been coaching malfeasance. First year was big assist from seniors Czinano/Warnock and the next year Marshall/Martin come March. Sometimes a coach has to be smart enough to not HAVE to control every play from the sidelines and let their start QB or PG take control on the field or court during the game. If you throttled the high risk passing because of turnovers you also throttled the easy baskets for Czinano, Martin and Stuekle.

Lucy is finding the going a lot tougher night to night in the Big Ten than in the weak Big East. She was looking really good in NC but her missed free throws were what cost Iowa the game. She was the closer, just couldn't make the freebies, she did everything you'd want in the last stretch except make the free throws she earned. Stuekle being really inconsistent night to night hurts them. She should be a go to in the paint but is only that sometimes. It's like she has just plateaued except for rebounds and she is missing the laser passes for easy baskets from Clark.

Disclaimer: I've only seen them a few times, much less than the Clark Final Four teams so extrapolating quite a bit from limited game views.

How many more losses can they take before becoming Q2?

They actually went 15-25 against us (we went 6-16).

If I have the right info Quad 1 for WBB is "...home game against a team ranked 1–25 in the NET, a neutral game against a team ranked 1–35, or an away game against a team ranked 1–45."'
  • Iowa NET 37 down 3
  • Iowa State NET 44
I'd guess they maybe drop down to +45 considering their schedule outlook but I don't do deep dives into the mechanics of the NET. Seems more likely we have our Quad 1 loss become a Quad 2 loss than for us to make their win a Quad 1. We would have to go on a hell of run to get to #25. like win every game.

Wildcard is their schedule works against them for winning record but for them on SOS. Ours is sort of the opposite in our outlook for wins is better with our schedule but seems the SOS of those remaining games works against us. Still, our path forward looks better for the rest of the season for sure.

She ended up playing 20 minutes 6 points she looked good on D with 8 blocks but Arizona gave her problems on offense.
I went over their schedule:
Green Bay 10 min
Belmont - did not play
Creighton - 15
Little Rock - 15
Milwaukee - 20
Duke - 28
DePaul - 24
Cent Ark - 19
East Ill - 18
USC Upstate - did not play
Texas A&M - 10
Middle Tennessee- 21
New Mexico State - 26
Cincy - 24
Houston - 27
Tech - 17
Utah - 17
BYU - 22
AZ - 20

Some of the playing time allocations puzzled me a bit as she seemed to play longer in games she wasn't needed. Maybe conditioning? She did have two games she did not play in.
