WBB: General All-NCAA Thread - Not Team Cyclones Stuff

A medical retirement can be awarded scholarship dollars and not count against the limit. However, they can't ever play again.

I've seen it happen most often in football -- scholarship guy gets a career-ending injury. Stays on scholarship, gets moved to "non-counter" status, and ends up working with the team in some capacity until graduation.
Apparently there is an exception: you can play again, but not for the university you medically retired from. So Jones could medically retire, but if she decided she did want to play she'd have to transfer out.

EDIT: Based on @Three4Cy 's post above, it looks like there's an exception to the exception -- you can play for the same university as long as there's retroactive space on the roster.

Or it could find a way to make Jones a basketball walk-on as a freshman while she redshirts and could ensure her scholarship support from other avenues, such as NIL opportunities. At this point, options are plentiful but imperfect.
I'm guessing this is extremely tricky, if not impossible. She was recruited to play basketball at Iowa, so I don't believe she can get other university scholarships without being a counter. Also, a Letter of Intent was signed, so I don't believe Iowa can pull that scholarship even with her permission. Also, if this were possible, schools would be doing it for players who are not injured -- "Hey, walk-on here, and we have an NIL deal that will cover your costs!" I'm sure the NCAA will consider that a scholarship deal and will count them.

As long as Jones wants to reserve the ability to play basketball in the future, she is not an exception to any NCAA rules and must be treated just like any other student-athlete.

Decent rule, doesn't rule out a "comeback" but prevents schools from abusing it like pro teams do with the injured list in baseball to get around roster limits.

The Iowa fanbase is dying to play in the portal this year and transition current players out of the program. I've seen Iowa fans throw two other names around as possible transfers.

If you are Addison O'Grady and Hannah Stulke, how would you feel if Bluder brought in a post player from the transfer portal?
Guess what? If you ever want to be competitive enough to actually win a Championship, then you have to recruit over people currently on your team. You have to be that cutthroat. I'm fine if you don't want to do it, but that is what it takes to win a championship more likely than not. I'm not a fan of it, but here we are.

We have to give credit where credit is due. Iowa opted to honor the scholarship offer to Ava Jones, with her LOI signed months after the accident which likely ended her basketball career. They had a great team when they did this and had to know it could potentially impact acquiring future transfers. I haven't seen anything from the administration about changing AJ's scholarship, just wishful thinking from a few of their fans.

Like bringing in Soares over our previous years posts, Jordão and Morgan? That was somehow so different? Or bringing in Jordão the previous year? Come on, I get that some peeps want to diss the rival here but that's sort of a silly take that's it's good for us to do but somehow bad for them.

We've been a lot more active in he transfer portal than Iowa has. One of the criticism of Bluder (somewhat unfair in my opinion) is that she was TOO loyal to her players and didn't use the portal much. In an era of transfers being a big deal she's not had much attrition or addition.

Until Iowa learns to play defense, they won't be winning a national championship.

Despite all the negative comments I can easily believe this might be true. Excellent return on investment, would easily pay for itself. Anything can happen in the tourney, but would likely position them well for natty. Iowa has a lot of $, especially compared to us. Per the wrestling gurus on this board they are paying $100k+ for wrestlers.
So you have to pay to get people to play at Iowa?

Even then, some savvy image you create if all the NIL moolah in Hawkland can't get players to come aboard.

Not sure I get your point.

Iowa has money - they bought a QB.
They buy some wrestlers, per our wrestling gurus.

I imagine the vast majority of their players are unpaid, like ours.

My point was $100,000 is a good investment if it gives you a shot at a title.

I refer only to Iowa's WBB and its merits:

1) You got Clark and a good bit of players returning.
2) Iowa just lost the N. Championship.
3) Iowa is highly regarded and in the Big Ten.
4) Iowa has great support for its WBB program now.

The two points I was taken to post about:

1) Why not first see who was willing to come on board THEN offer the NIL bundle? This is not about academic scholarships, this is about who WANTS to play for you. Maybe I am a little naive but team chemistry (especially with Clark as a teammate) would be a priority if a goal is getting back to the Championship game.

2) Now that those (apparently) offered NIL money are not considering Iowa, to me, Iowa comes off within a whisker of appearing desperate-if not even a bit amateurish, monied but unsophisticated. I know the players may have already made decisions to play elsewhere and have not turned the money down as I state. But, we shall see who they land.

This new NIL game recruiting is a different play than HS recruits which is a big numbers game.

Are we on the list of 33 and not a big enough name to get mentioned?

We are on the list of 33 if you look at the replies. We were one and done and not an elite so those others schools will get the mention. Not sure why USC got a call out though. They weren't very good and are a LONG way from Chicago.

Is that USC. . . South Carolina? Lots of people in WBB refer to them as USC

Probably easier to make a list of the schools that haven't contacted her. Maybe that is why some players choose "not to be contacted"...

My thoughts on her are she is looking a couple things for her next school 1. do they have a chance to go far in the tourney 2. can she be the main star ( won't get that at Iowa) 3. what kind of NIL is there for her
