WBB: General All-NCAA Thread - Not Team Cyclones Stuff

Drake got held to a season low 43 points at home versus Minnesota yesterday. They drop to 2-9 and NET of #236.
I really thought what they showed in the 3rd quarter against ISU showed there was talent on the team. But wow…something just isn’t clicking for them this year.

I was just coming to post about this, cannot be good for the sport.

It’s just as bad now 120-34 with four minutes to play.

There is big jump from playing a mid to low level P4 versus the top teams. They lost to Arkansas by 8 and Memphis by 4. And than got drilled by LSU by 89, Baylor by 65 and now Texas by 82. Texas starters only played half the game.

They were 26-6 and 19-1 (NET 106) last season so I am not expecting people thought they would be this bad?

That is really crazy. It seems like the # of those top teams is increasing where it’s more like 4-6 as opposed to the years past when it was only two (UConn/Tennessee) so is the trend going to continue?

Top 1-4 are in a class amongst themselves. 5-10 are very good but beatable by other good teams. Just huge separation after top four though.

Smattering of Big 10 games today. Hadn't been thinking WBB this week so didn't think to see if any were on TV. Only just now got reminded when some posts popped up in my twitter feed.

#4 UCLA over hosting #19 Ohio State 82-75.

#14 Iowa over visiting Penn State Lady Campbells.

Remember 6'-5" two sport recruit Maggie Mendelson who was going to play both volleyball and basketball for Nebraska? Only played her freshman year of WBB for Huskers and after that only volleyball at Nebraska and than Penn State. And she's back as a senior for Penn State. And started along side 6'-6" Gracie Merkle and played 17 minutes today. Didn't score but I found it interesting. And the twin towers thing didn't work out well, Hawks post and big forward had 41 points.

Any team that gets out and runs has a good chance of taking Merkle out of the game with transition. She does not get up and down the court well. She's pretty good in the half court offense for them just because of her size. Iowa team played well today.

Gophers thumped previous Cyclone opponent Indiana at Indiana tonight in a surprisingly easy 71-48 win. Gophers held Hoosiers to 5 points in the 3rd. Hoosiers have scored 57 and 48 in their two Big Ten games. They are 0-2 and now have a run of four ranked teams in a row so guessing they will soon be 0-6.

Stats of interest:

Field goals: Minnesota 29-71, Indiana 15-39
Offensive rebounds: Minnesota 18, Indiana 2
Turnovers: Minnesota 6, Indiana 21 (pts off turnovers were 21-6)
Pts in the paint: 38-10 Minnesota

Well unrelated but I saw a ad for Moore (?) Auto where some guy and a couple of gals from the Minnesota girls hockey team had a hallway hockey shoot out. Nice thing was it was what NIL was supposed to be.

Minnesota getting back into form? Also not great for ISU if Indiana starts sucking.

When you allow a team to take twice as many shots as you do it’s not a good formula for success. Amazingly, Minnesota only had 19 second chance points off those 18 offensive boards. Two differences jump out when comparing to the ISU box score. The obvious is that Ciezki didn’t go off for 38 points. Secondarily, eight players scored against ISU versus essentially three against Minnesota. Just an ugly outing all the way around for Indiana.

In their loss to Illinois it was pretty much the same story…no scoring support past the first three. They also allowed Illinois to take over 70 shots…nearly 20 more than Indiana took.

Minnesota is a probably a middling Big Ten team. They have enough talent to bump off some ranked teams on a given night (they had Maryland beat and collapsed). Interestingly enough having Mara Braun back was supposed to be a big deal but she's sort of the weak link among the starters. She is shooting a brutal percentage for the season and needs to shoot less.

I think Indiana is proving to just be a mediocre team that's going to get blasted in league play. When we had them on our schedule we were maybe thinking/hoping they would be good based on their recent success.

Indiana has had at least one (maybe two) players that were rotation players leave the team. I know one left to return to her home country to play professionally.

Monster game on ESPN at noon - Florida National @ Florida International. I’ve never heard of Florida National - appears they’re a for-profit school founded in 1988, focused on the health sciences. Sadly, Isnelle is no longer on the FIU roster - her eligibility must be expired.
