Way up there
Some notes from a second viewing:

5. Wimberly only seems to get what the play was blocked for and rarely gets good yardage after contact. I rarely saw him make anyone miss.

5. Nealy got plenty of yards after contact beyond what the play was blocked for. He was unlucky on the second fumble as both hands were on the ball close to his chest

In juco, Wimberly busted lots of huge runs but he's more of a one cut type of runner. He's simply not going to be a bruiser type of back. More of a homerun type of back.

I'd like to see Nealy get more touches, I still don't think he's proven much here but I like the way he runs. Our oline hasn't run blocked very good to this point but it seems like Nealy can get something out of nothing. I'd much rather see him getting the ball in short yardage situations than Wimberly. IMO he had one of his better games at Iowa, I was glad to see him get that last TD, he played too to only have ppl dwell on the fumbles (which were both nice plays by the defense)

Without going back and looking at the replay, it looked to me like Nealy had the ball out in front of him a little bit too much on both fumbles. I realize on the goal line one he was trying to break the plain but he has to know the situation there and protect the ball. He had both hands on it but it wasn't totally protected. Or did I mis-see that in my drunken haze?

Nealy on first and second downs to run and Aaron on third down for swing passes?

:radar::cry: He had two hands on the ball both times, but he needed to add a padlock.

DL - I thought that Meyers did a good job. He was consistently in the backfield. Usually, he went flying by the ball carrier, but at least he was disruptive. Taylor and White did well at times and Morrissey was a beast.

LB - Miller was all over the place. Knott and Ferch did OK too. Everyone else has a ways to go.

DB - Pretty good game outside of CBSR dropping that pick and someone letting the TE get open down the seam.

QB - Great game.

RB - Good in the receiving game, not as good in other areas.

WR - Can't fault their effort with so many backups playing.

TE - Bibbs is back!

OL - Nice job in pass pro, run game needs some work, but that's Iowa's strong point, so I'll give them a break.

Overall, I think that this staff finally did what everyone thought they should: Make iowa pay for their inexplicable stubbornness. They refuse to go to the nickel on D and their O is set on being in 1985. As long as they have decent athletes, any staff that is worth a crap should be able to find the mismatches that Iowa's rigid system presents. Of course, Messingham spent last year's game trying to run zone read inside...the exact opposite of what he should have been doing. Change in OC won us this game.

I would say the running backs were excellent in pass protection.

IMO we should see more snaps with both on the field, especially now that we are down two WRs. Both are very capable receivers out of the backfield, and at the same time help with protection a bit more. With those two, plus Bibbs and West, you have a lot of flexibility to run the same plays out of different formations (and vis versa). I would love to see a lot of presnap movement to create mismatches.

Well, yea, but the LOS isn't 3-4 yards downfield where the contact happened.

Keeping in mind that I haven't reviewed the play you're talking about; if it's 3-4 yards downfield, refs aren't going to call that either if it's an offensive lineman blocking a defensive lineman.

Hey, how about the play before the run where Nealy fumbled into the endzone? Mangino split our Right Tackle (Dagel, I believe) out right with the WRs & lined up Bibbs at TE next to the left guard on the left side of the offense. While watching the game on TV I did not even notice & didn't recall Spielman bringing it up on the replay right after. Gives the look we will run some sort of screen right, but then isolate Bibbs on the left. He ran a go route or skinny post & Iowa was not fooled at all as 2 defenders were right there (& a 3rd was awful close too), but QB Sam threw an absolute strike. Still, interesting to see the strategy there on that call.

Oh, and safeties do have a little more room to build up speed to make big hits. Nice to see we have one that do, but I'd not compare big hits with LBs for that reason.

Tribune's tackling & run support has been very good. Becoming a total CB, not just specializing in coverage. Maybe teams so far had tested just that (running at him) - good to see him hold up & actually show no weakness in this part of his game.

I've been pleasantly surprised by this as well. I've noticed a good number of his tackles coming in on run support, just past the line of scrimmage. The guy gives total effort every play.

Agree, that never gets called.

Meyers being able to play inside is huge. He's undersized, but it gives us more depth there, plus puts a lot more speed on the field which will be important against the Big 12 spread offenses.

We've got some good slot receivers but I'd personally like to see Wimberely lined up in the slot some. Mangino can run plays with him similar to what he did with Jarvis against K-State.

I like this, and think we'll see more movement and play designs as the season progresses. As Mangino gets an idea of what the personnel can do, and the players get the base plays down, we should see some more creativity and utilizing everybody's best skills.

I'd like to see Nealy & Wimberly in a split backfield, then motion Wimberly into a slot position with Jarvis at the other slot and Lazard & Montgomery/Bibbs on the outsides.
