explain this a bit, most folks find plain concrete rather "lifeless"

Do we want to come across as anything else? Don't we want people to see our team as "lifeless" when they play us?

Seriously though, there are three reasons why I prefer this.

First it matches better with the style of the buildings around it. The Iowa State center is all concrete, no exposed steel. Bergstrom has both elements, but notable the pilers are concrete and not steel. Jack Trice has some exposed steel, but most of it is out of view when your inside the stadium. In fact from inside the stadium, almost all you see is concrete and very little steel anywhere.

Second, it will make that end of the stadium feel more closed in and in this way will help the Jake fill in that side of the stadium. Just ask any interior designer or architect. The more solid it is or looks the more it will help enclose the north end zone.

Last, concrete is a sign of strength and power. Ever see Hoover Dam? I live and work about an hour away from the largest concrete structure in the US, Grand Coulee Dam. I get chills just driving by it. Would the St. Louis arch be as iconic if it was exposed steal?

I'm not even saying we should do solid concrete. They could attach panels to the steel that make it look like concrete. Also I in no way think they should get rid of the steel design in the cross structure. If we want it to look more like Bergstrom it should be concrete pilers and exposed steel on the cross structure.

Its got a stainless steel skin, but i dont believe the stainless steel is the main structural element.

I should have specified steel beam structure. If the arch did not have the steel panels it would not be as iconic. Lets be honest, the way the Arch was built wasn't to make St Louis feel warm and full of life, it was built so to leave people in awe and we wouldn't be in awe if the base structure wasn't covered by panels, in this case steel.

But it's still exposed steel (stainless steel is still steel). The OP was saying it was concrete.
 
You guys are arguing semantics and not actually addressing the claim. And I'm sorry, but I have never viewed the Eiffel Tower as a sign of strength and power. It is more for amusement as something unique. I've always wanted to see notre dame far more than the Eiffel tower.

The scoreboard is supposed to provide fans with the score as well as other stats. If you want I can find the wiki article about scoreboards.:rolleyes:

The design of the structure should match that of the rest of the stadium and surrounding buildings. This design only matches one structure, Bergstrom. Even with Bergstrom the exposed steel is limited to the roof.

And in my opinion, yes. A football stadium should be designed to convey a sense of strength and power. You want to be able to intimidate the opposing team, not listen to them laugh at our big jungle gym.

For the record, I think it is a major improvement regardless, but I do wish they were doing concrete.

I dunno. I'd say that with its size and shape that it was intended to exude power, especially as it was the tallest structure in the world for 41 years. Now step back and consider it back in 1889 when most other buildings were maybe 2 or 3 stories tall.

This. Exposed steel design is absolutely intended to express strength. It shows the skeletal backbone of the structure, making clear it's foundation, organization, and structure. It hides nothing. Very good concepts for a football stadium to display.

It is carbon steel. And it is rusting.

Where did anyone ever say that concrete structures don't display power?

The point is that exposed steel can display it, as well.
 
Why are we arguing about architecture? Leave it to Cyclone Fanatic...we'll find a way to start arguing about anything.
