Our architects did one of the worst jobs ever IMO.[/URL]

Why would you put it on the architects? Theyre not the ones that decided to put a building there.

I believe i read once that at one point we had plans for a much more imposing, more grandiose building in that endzone, but the plans were scaled back (anyone want to confirm this?). Architects wouldntve done that, just as they wouldntve chosen the location. Put that on the AD officials, or hell, put it on those that wouldnt put up the money to make whatever building in the NEZ as big and impressive as it shouldve been to make it really fit up there. .

Or, as CyCrazy suggested... move on. The building is there now and its not going anywhere. We wont need the space it occupies for anything else for a long, long time.

The fact they didn't have enough foresight so think we might someday want to bowl in the north endzone is just plain idiotic.

West Virginia's stadium was built just like ours. Look what kind of building they put in their endzone. The link is below. They did a great job. Our architects did one of the worst jobs ever IMO.

Wow, what a whiner. It's easy to complain about the builder's foresight when you have the benefit of hindsight. For crying out loud, you'd think the pea under your mattress was a boulder.

So we are getting roughly 40-45k people now, and bowling in the south end zone adds what, 15k? And you think we'll need more seats? I know we can all be attendance optimistic, but you are way off base.

Yep..lets try and copy West Virginia. God forbid we venture out and our own and try to set ourselves apart from anyone else..:skeptical:

Sounds more to me like pee on his mattress..

Given what they had to work with, this was probably about as good as they could do. It would look better if the gap between the roof of the Jake and the bottom of the scoreboard was smaller, but I think there would be a wind issue with that potentially.

I have said this a thousand times, but it bears repeating once again... whoever designed and agreed upon the plans for the Jacobsen building were complete idiots! Someone on here could probably tell me who designed and built this piece of crap to begin with? I don't care who it was, it was idiotic.

The way the Jacobsen building was designed, they basically destroyed any future idea of expanding that north endzone into anything else because NOTHING would fit in with that hideous building. Especially with the ridiculous roof design. I realize it was supposed to fit in with the architecture of Hilton and CY Stephens, but it was dumb.

Now we can't ever bowl in that end, and now adding a scoreboard looks stupid too, but we do really need it, so this is about the best we could do. It looks horrible, but what are you going to do now?

No it doesn't.

still being a complete idiot I see....

It could be just me but I could care less if the TV was mounted on Lincoln logs. I get to see the game in HD on a 36' x 80' screen and hear Sweet Caroline through a
Sportsound system uses the latest digital audio technology and will implement pounding bass energy and smooth mid- and high-range frequencies

so good! so good! so good!

i think they had to make it tall so people sitting low on the north side "close to the jake" could see the bottom of the screen without the corner of the roof interfering with the screen?

otherwise i would of like to seen it lower as well.

Worrying about possibly bowling in the north endzone in the future right now is ridiculous.

1) By the time we might need to have it bowled in, this new videoboard will probably be outdated and in need of replacement anyways.

2) And if we ever get to the point where we've had enough success that we need that many more seats, money to tear out the Jacobson Building and replace the scoreboard probably won't be too huge an issue...

My thoughts/comments on it this thing:

1) I think the rendering itself is what's causing some issues for people who don't like the size/scale. They've got what appears to be a 3D image (guessing google sketchup) imposed over a 2d picture. I think that is messing with the perspective and scale. In the north looking views the scoreobard appears to be 20'+ in front of where it will be in actuality. Also in the view looking NW the base of the towers should be around the size of one of those pickups. Any of our google sketchup wizards want to take a shot at rendering something similar on their model? I know we've got some people who are good at it on here.

2) I do kind of wish the towers had been enclosed, but I think the pipe truss structure will look good. Enclosing those tower would have added a lot more to the cost than people think. I think there is the possibility to do some potentially cool lighting in front of the speakers at night (think rope lights/neon (only high quality) outlining the I-State logo).

3) I actually like the Jacobsen building being in the north endzone. If we could afford it, I think a good architect could expand upon it and make a very cool building over there. (My thought would be to mirror the Jake with the pointing at like 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock positions off the center of the building.). I doubt we'll ever get to the point of needing that though.

In the end, I'm happy with it and once it's installed and running 98% of the people won't really care what it looks like.

To address a few criticisms in this thread:

No brick for me. The materiality of the complex is concrete (exposed) and steel.

A few insightful poster have pointed out the structural issues regarding wind and snow loads if it were attached/ closer to the Jake. Absolutely correct. Also, the board is set back from the south facade of the Jake - assumed so that people on the northern endzone seats can view the board. This also means to see it looking from a downward position, it needs to be well above the roof - overhangs from the Jake would block view of the bottom.

As an architect/ designer, I'm not sure I would want to touch this with a ten foot pole. The jacobsen has an iconic roof line, and to "attach" it to the building in any way would be a NIGHTMARE aesthetically. Look at it - It dwarfs the size of the Jake. The best thing to do - which is exactly what I would have done - is to give it plenty of clearance, and "reverence" by doing so.

I'm sure that wind loads have already been considered, and the members have been sized - at least close to what they will need to be.

Photoshopping could be better, but you get the idea right?

Beyond nit-picking the aesthetics, I'm guessing this will heighten the gameday experience so much (from visual and audio perspective) and you'll forget about all these others things.

Good comments and I think we will dig the new board.

This is what I miss...all because Cyclone Fanatic was spammed last year, resulting in this site being blocked at work *sigh*. Now we are 16 pages in already...I don't have anything to add even though I am coming from the architectural/design side of things. madcityCY said it the best.

I think this will be a great addition to Jack Trice, and it will definitely up the game-day atmosphere. HOWEVER, those renderings are absolutely horrible...a sketch rendering at best and nothing that should have been public facing, especially with a fan base that has been clamoring for at least a glimpse of the big change to come in little over a mere 100 days. Anyone who expected fans to accept these images without question were not being reasonable. So, those who are quick to pull out their "donation card" to validate their opinion (or lack thereof) of the board design over others who simply expect ISU to do the right thing aesthetically when given the chance, calm it down a bit. I don't think anyone is arguing against the overall good this will bring.

All that being said, there is plenty that could be done to dress this structure up a bit. I hope they do more than what is being shown in these Daktronics renderings, as right now the scale of the structural components is a little awkward and imposing in a fairly close setting. I would agree that the lower portion should be sheathed in either matching concrete or patterned metal mesh (which would give you more bang for the buck). I also hope the "I-State/Jack Trice Stadium" logos on each side of the board are not the actual graphic going up. They are redundant, unimaginative, and something that could be easily altered and designed well by a graphic designer. It is the perfect opportunity to have a great tie-in design.

Even though it looks like a UFO from Independence Day floating over the Jake, I'm not bothered by the distance between the two because of obvious natural force reasons. Again, the first rendering is a player's view from the field and the perspective will change from different angles. They should not have led off with this view in their presentation.

There are still plenty of opportunities to help this out aesthetically. I hope they do the right thing because there is a lot of promise there. Since we were given such crappy renderings to form an opinion, it is certainly understandable why people are disappointed and critical about the design.

As some have said, I don't think the rendering gives the project justice. This thing is going to look sweet when it is completed. Maybe this will give us a little respect in the world of college football.
