One thing they didn't think of is that now people won't come in from the student lots south of the stadium because they'll be able to watch it from the parking lots lol.

Something else to consider is how the football only facility will look. We already know this scoreboard fits in with the IPF, and with the jake, when looking north from the stadium, assuming plans havent changed to put the new facility elsewhere, the view will consist of the IPF, FOF, and Scoreboard, from left to right. The projected look of the FOF facility may have been considered in the overall look of this board.
This thing will look epic in real life, but whoever did the renderings did weak sauce. The support beams are like crayon drawings. I assume the supports are gonna look more like the Jake's exposed supports.

True. Hopefully, if the Ath. Dept. has any idea what the football only facility will look like, it was considered, but maybe not. the FOF might not be that far along in planning and development, or it may have just not have been shared, which would be unfortunate. Things like that have happened before.
FWIW, the capital planning spreadsheet from ISU says its to go before the regents in June, start construction in July, complete by july 2012.

You might want to walk around the complex and look again...Olsen Bulding, Jake, concessions, walls by the north gates...there is plenty of non concrete/steel going on.
If that's the case, they ought to know pretty well what the building footprint is, and the aesthetic.
Given what they had to work with, this was probably about as good as they could do. It would look better if the gap between the roof of the Jake and the bottom of the scoreboard was smaller, but I think there would be a wind issue with that potentially.
I have said this a thousand times, but it bears repeating once again... whoever designed and agreed upon the plans for the Jacobsen building were complete idiots! Someone on here could probably tell me who designed and built this piece of crap to begin with? I don't care who it was, it was idiotic.
The way the Jacobsen building was designed, they basically destroyed any future idea of expanding that north endzone into anything else because NOTHING would fit in with that hideous building. Especially with the ridiculous roof design. I realize it was supposed to fit in with the architecture of Hilton and CY Stephens, but it was dumb.
Now we can't ever bowl in that end, and now adding a scoreboard looks stupid too, but we do really need it, so this is about the best we could do. It looks horrible, but what are you going to do now?

Rent a bulldozer for the jake? Maybe one of those cranes with the wrecking ball attached? That would clear up the space reaaaallly quickly.
Why would need to bowl in the North end zone? Lets just get the South end zone done. That will be enough, and if we do grow in attendance we can add more seating else where.

Regardless, doesn't change my opinion on design. Those are the primary materials. Visible from the stands. For my taste, I wouldn't use brick.
Ideally, if the jake hadnt been built and i had a choice between the two, id rather bowl in the north than the south to block out some of the north wind.If i was going to put a building in the north id rather have had it be a much bigger building to be much more imposing in that endzone.
That is what I meant earlier when I wrote brick. I don't know about what he meant.
I know who designed it. A Nationally award winning Architecture firm in Des Moines, IA. Phenomenal designers, In my own opinion. Several were professors of mine. They are not idiots, they're very smart, and they had good reasons for what they did.
Bowling in either end of this stadium WAS THE FARTHEST THING AWAY in ANYONE's mind when they built the Jake. In fact, I can imagine that this project was at the time viewed as a way to make the stadium and facilities look more "big time." It's the only thing they had going - they did with it what they could. We are a long ways from needing to bowl in the North end zone. If the South endzone gets filled up, they can put an upper deck on it.
I love the roof design - its modern, unique and graceful, and contextual (as you mentioned w/ CY Stephens and Hilton). And that is what was ultimately sold to the Ath. Dept. at the time. But that's just my opinion. Everyone has their own.
