Vehicle Fuel Range

If you have a newer ride... say 2013 or newer... the fuel range is usually pretty safe in my experience. I would bet, but have not tested that you can get 20-25 miles after the range goes to zero as most auto makes make them pretty conservative. I've put 20.1 gallon in my 20 gallon fuel tank ONE time and that was well after the range went to zero. I wasn't paying attention and when I did notice I was at 2 miles left with 10-15 miles to go to gas station so I was sweating as I pulled in.

Usually I fill up when fuel light goes on but the wife and daughters like to push that limit everytime I get in their rides..

I haven't really stress-tested my current car. It's a 2018 hatchback I've had for about 5 months. My light has come on once and said something around 25. I've recorded between 28 - 32 mpg depending on type of driving.

My last vehicle, a late-90s pickup, I never dropped below 1/4 tank. Except when I put it in 4WD the gauge would work fine on the dashboard display but the light always came on. That was fun.

Have been seeing 23mpg+ highway at 75+mph cruise with the new family hauler. Closest we have gotten so far is it showing 12 miles left but then only put 17.8 gallons into an 18.8 gallon tank. Use only regular unleaded (non ethanol) in it. as low as 10mpg pulling my 8.5ft tall utility trailer into a 40+mph head wind though..106741669_670017540244649_3351966579729513895_n.jpg

I think 15 miles or so. I knew I was getting close to one of my regular stopping points on the route so wasn't too panicked.

A couple of years ago riding my Yamaha in an unfamiliar part of rural South Central Iowa I debated filling up leaving one town. I knew there were other little towns further along. What I didn't know was those towns were dots on the map, but there weren't any fuel stations in any of them. I finally made it over to I-35 but continue to US69 thinking I might find another station. Meanwhile my fuel gauge (in sixths) was in the last range AND blinking - which means get gas NOW, dumb-ass. I finally came across this country station and filled up. Their credit card reader was down so I had to dig out ones and loose change to pay the bill.

And going back a LONG time ago. My car at the time had no working gas gauge. I drove to Ames from Muscatine for my Freshman orientation around June 1976. I made it there and most of the way back until I ran out just about 15 miles from home. Fortunately I had a 5 gallon can mostly full in the trunk in case I ran out. Somehow after all this time when I go by that spot in the road I always remember running out of gas there.

yeah my motorcycle is 4.1 gallons for the tank.
Mine is 6 gallons. Not sure if I have ever had to put more than 4.5 in it. If you're on the interstate you pretty much need to stop every 2-3 hours to walk around a bit and give your butt a break.

I’ve driven my 2018 Equinox to St. Louis from Ames a few times I avg between 30-31 mpg consistently. It has the 2.0 turbo. It seem to get better mileage if it has more weight in it. Seems weird but had 500 lbs of bagged pea gravel and drove to Carroll and got 33 mpg. Drove home and got a tad over 29.

...and the wind direction was?

The tank in my F-150 holds 36 gallons (in theory, never tested it). But I rarely let it get more than half empty, because it's too painful to fill it. Although it's not as bad as it was a couple years ago.

I generally trust the mileage, but that's not to say I've ever confirmed it.

I used to build grain bins and our boss had a truck with a 100 gallon tank in the bed of the truck as well as the 36 gallon tank. We'd get reimbursed for buying gas, so we'd argue over who got to fill the thing to get the rewards points on a card.

Let me check my spreadsheet.

I fueled the 2004 Audi A4 296 times with an average fill of 13.9 gallons. Tank capacity was listed at 17.4 and max I ever put in was 16.4

I have fueled the current Audi A5 70 times at an average of 10.91 gallons. Max fill has been 13.9 with capacity listed as 16.1.

I've run both down to 0 on remaining miles so guessing Audi is pretty conservative or it's a case of @wxman1's "usable" fuel.
Have they changed the way they list the fuel tank capacity? I used to be able to get more in the tank then the listed capacity - I assume because of the volume of the fuel fill pipe - with all of my cars. I haven't really tested it or paid attention in my latest cars.

Just last week:
