UCLA vs. UAB

Why does the big 12 do quite well in pre conference games against quality opponents, but fail in post season games against weak opponents?

I can't believe how much contact the refs are letting go in the tournament. defenders riding the offensive player all the way up the court with the body and no call.
Yeah, this plus UCLA's size would have given us similar problems as the UAB game (plus SC and KSU games off the top of my head). Parker and Looney would have been a tough combo. If we could hit some shots and get the game to speed up, Hoiball could have kicked in though.

This is part of the problem IMHO.

The B12 plays soft but entertaining MBB and FB.

Then when post season comes around we fold like a bad tent to teams from other leagues when they punch us in the mouth.
The question why does it work so well (almost historically well this year) in the non-conference? First, the non-conference is a larger sample. Second, conference records often come down to close games. The game is called differently imo. Third, tournament success is largely based on your bluebloods (best team) success, not your average. Two good teams making a run like the SEC did last year changes the perspective. We only have one,..

Look at Izzo ball. We, in general, play the opposite. That works well in the regular season, not in post-season tournament situations. Even ignoring the unreliability of good shooting of empty neutral gyms, it is tough to flip a switch and grind out the inevitable "final-possession, close games" of the tournament when you don't play that way normally. KU can to a degree because they can recruit a diverse roster that allows them to play multiple styles imo.

We can make the NCAA tournament for the next 10 years and never have an easier route to the Sweet 16. #14 UAB and #11 UCLA. Show up twice and play hard.

Ucla out rebounds uab 41-26. I wonder if Bryce Alford knows how to box a guy out.

It certainly does; apparently he was blocking out both his guy AND Tyler Madison.
Could be, or just less opportunities for Madison.
Our defense and rebounding was often like plugging leaks in a dam. That is not as likely to happen with huge guys like Parker and Welsh as your anchors and Looney able to clean up.

UCLA is in general a bad match-up for UAB, but if UAB had gone after the boards in the 1st half like they did in the 2nd half then the game would've been much tighter the rest of the way. Mehinti 13 minutes, 5 fouls was pretty much the game too.

There is no other way to put it. UAB is terrible. Brown is the only guy who can score. Still don't know how we lost to this bad of a team. Had to attend a funeral this morning with a bunch of Badgers...that was fun
