I do as well, but I doubt Chris Williams is lying to us. He has a lot of connections and is well-informed on all of this.
I am sure there are some places that would pay that much for one player but I doubt it is as widespread as that. I mean I get paying someone like Oscar T at Kentucky that kind of money because him coming back makes a huge impact on that team but paying kid like Brandon Murray that kind of money? I doubt some booster of Georgetown paid him that much to come there when they probably don't even want Ewing coaching there anymore. Or say someone like Andre Curbelo to St. John's. Who is paying him 500K?

Dude…I’m not arguing that. The post I quoted made an assumption as if the list of teams in that article are real suitors for Hunter. I’m stating that’s not necessarily true. The article is a list of schools the author throw down and wrote about how Hunter could fit or why they might make sense.

Could he end up at one of the schools in that article? Yep. Just as easily as a school not on that list.

If there is one thing I’m sure of. He’s going to end up at a school higher in the competitive pecking order than ISU. We were a Sweet 16 team this year so there aren’t many options equal to and above us.

It seems like this portal/nil issue is worse in MBB than football. In football, guys leave mostly looking for a place to play more or upgrade a level. But in hoops, they seem to be chasing money.
Agreed. Plus the value proposition is just easier with a 13 man roster where one or two studs can truly carry a team. Football gets a lot harder outside of proven stars at like specifically QB that it will make a big difference in W/L.

Yeah this proves that, Mcgee was a low level transfer who got at least some money. I also don't assume Mcgee got a ton of money but I'm willing to believe (given they both worked out together at the same gym in Wisconsin the past few months) he told Tyrese what he got/was offered and it was enough to make Tyrese think "Well shoot, if he's get $XXX I wonder what I could be getting." Tyrese knowing that he is the far better player between the two.

Also, CW stated on their most recent pod, after talking to coaches around the nation that the "going rate" for and good player in the portal is $300k-$500k...
Why are we assuming Mcgee got any money? I haven't seen anything, but have done little research. If Wisconsin is paying him anything that gets Hunter's attention, then one of two things: Wisconsin has so much NIL that they can pay significant money to a role player, or Iowa St has absolutely zero to give to Fr of the year in the Big 12.

How many of these schools are legitimate options for Hunter, as opposed to just a gigantic list of “name” programs the author of the article pulled together?
I could see him at Miami. He got an up close view of what they are about and how they play.

I know McGee was one of TH's high school friends but it seems like McGee was lucky Wisconsin took him. Kamari McGee was an average to below average player on literally one of the worst teams in college basketball last year. A lot of Wisconsin fans thought he was a walk-on when he committed.

I agree that these leaks may be calculated. Throw out a school like NC and then float the $750k figure. Lets potential suitors know the price range. Gives the impression other schools have offered. Kind of like a Coach’s agent leaking fake job offers to get Contract extensions.

Wouldn't he be going right back to a 'defense emphasized' team then? Of course, I have no clue if Virginia has sweet NIL deals.
Who said that 'defense emphasized' team is a turn off for him? If anything, I think he is, and should be selling his elite defensive ability.

That opens up huge opportunities to play at the biggest level, for the best coaches. Calipari, Self, Beard, Wright, Bennett... Not all of them emphasize defense like TJ did, but they know how important it is to have a guy like Hunter that is willing to play hard on defense.

We would hate it here, but Hunter is a perfect pg for Self. Frank Mason, Devonte Grahm, Devon Dotson, all very similar to Hunter.

Not sure why you quoted my post with this. I’m not saying anything even remotely related to what you’re suggesting.

It's amazing we have people on this board ready to jump-of-a-cliff in regard to college sports. What happened with Tyrese has been happening for mid-major and weaker P5 schools for close to a decade and has been out-of-control for the last few years before NIL.

It was great when we were the Portal darling. Now that the tide has turned, people are whining and ready to take up a new hobby like making potholders.

Take a step back, chill and watch TJ build next year's team. He did a pretty good job last season and all he has to sell was his vision and Hilton Magic. He built up some goodwill after the Sweet 16 run and has had a good start in the transfer portal this spring. I'm confident in a month we'll all be excited for the 22/23 season.
Your point is valid, we have been the recipient like many other major schools. But what's different about this one..... I think it was harder for people to take because it 'seems' like NIL money prompted it. We'll never know, tho. Most of those transfers we got were either from weakerP5 , juco,or mid-major schools (Nader, Tyrus, Cato, Tinsley, Andersen, etc) OR P5 guys that either needed a 'fresh start' (White, Allen) or wanted a more prominent role (Babb, IB,etc). Tyrese was succeeding at a P5 Sweet 16 school that just historically shocked many basketball fans, didn't need a more prominent role or publicity...he was the freshmen of the year in the Big12, and talked about as a future NBA pick. I think the fans' reactions have been very normal and understandable for the most part. (minus the real unclassy responses)

Look: TJ is good friends w/Tyrese's high school coach, the Wisc connection runs strong, the season appeared very rewarding and high profile for Tyrese, you turn around a floundering program, go to the Sweet 16, become FOY in the big12...yet TJ still couldn't keep this guy. THAT HURTS and had to surprise so many people. Natural to speculate that NIL changes things extremely going forward.

Thank God for Coach Matt Campbell, a lot of people would be depressed in Iowa. As for me, I loved basketball when the mayor was coach and the likes of Morris, Niang. It used to be fun. Now? Whatever happens, if it’s good then I watch, bad, I go to the strip club. Anyways Coach TJ needs to change his formula a bit and insist on scoring a lot of points, yes defense is also but you have to score more than the team. Some good players might not be coming to ISU if they don’t give them freedom to score. The nba needs scorers so TJ defensive system might be working against us…. I’m ignoring the NIL aspect here.
I'm trying to figure out how TJ is going to score more than the team. I mean if he shoots from the bench they aren't going to count that bucket...

So scholarship applications seem to be down as college costs increase? That doesn't even make sense.

Sadly, from my experience that is the case. It really doesn’t make sense. The same kids that don’t apply complain about student loan debt when they are done.

Yup. It's going to suck for fans of our teams (ISU and Iowa) when our coaches find the diamond in the rough type of players who then bolt for more money elsewhere. Both of our programs have had their successes in large part due to those types of players.

Don’t compare what you haven’t done to what we have done.

Some have posted that...I was just echoing that. Said that maybe he wanted to excel more on the offensive end or be in a better offensive system. Maybe not. Of course he will continue to shine defensively regardless. So are you saying that you think it is totally an NIL$ move?
