Traffic Flow

My wife and I park 2 miles from the stadium because of how much of a mess it is around the stadium post-game. Even with the walk back to the car, we're home just over an hour after the game ended.

Fully understanding not everyone is able to do (my mom would never be able to make such a walk,) but parking as far from the stadium while being within a walking distance beats sitting in traffic.

This is the way I've always done it. I'm lucky in some ways, coming from Illinois, it's not like I'm planning to be home for some other event that evening. Sit in a hotel room or sit under the tent for an hour or two and listen to the post-game. It drives my wife nuts how casual I am about leaving, but on a nice evening/night, I'd rather be sitting outside than stuck in a hotel room.
Same... I drive down from Minny and stay overnight.

There's a lot more they can do than they had been doing though. For example, there's no reason the grass lots should be headed anywhere but towards duff..
I agree in theory, but there's a reason they have changed this in practice. Have you parked in G2/G3? A few years ago, they forced all traffic from these lots to go right toward Duff. During that set up, the four lots east of G2/G3 were fully empty before a single car moved in G2/G3. It was 2 hours plus before G2/G3 was emptied. My tailgating group would literally go back and take an hour nap in their cars before even attempting to get in line. Lately, they have G2/G3 go towards the stadium while the other four grass lots went east on South 16th. This allowed all traffic to at least move.

Either they have to keep the current setup or do a much better job of alternating between how many cars they let out of each lot.

As someone that parks in the grass lots I have come to accept this but I still hate it as I want to head towards university and get on 30 west from the University on ramp not the Duff one. Sucks to have to sit on 16th eastbound in traffic that crawls just to get on 30 in order to go west. It's 2 miles longer to basically get to the on ramp I would prefer to go west on University. I get it and I accept it but doesn't mean I have to like it.

Plus the parking attendants that run the grass lots have some of the most backward logic when filling the lots then directing traffic out of there some weeks that make it even more of a s*-show. You are only supposed to be able to enter those lots with a right turn but they still let people turn into them with a left turn which holds up things. Make those people move on and turn around down the road somewhere and come in the right way like the rest of us waiting to get in had to. If you keep making exceptions to the traffic flows people will never learn and they will keep trying to shortcut their way around it.
They need to close down 16th street to two way traffic and force everyone up to Grand to go North, or to Duff to get on the interstate. Put highway patrol there at Grand, and force the two lanes on the north side of the street, to go that way, and those on the south side up to Duff.

I think the people in the North lane should be allowed to go through to the hotels or to go North on Duff or Dayton.

This is the response I got from the school:

Thanks for using the Fan Feedback link and asking this question. ISU’s law enforcement partners have developed the post-game traffic plan and routes, however the maps are not typically distributed as these plans and routes can change given circumstances in the moment (ie. traffic congestion, road closures, traffic accidents, etc..) and the law enforcement partners will re-route traffic accordingly. There will be traffic staff in each area directing vehicles to the nearest available exit route. We will relay your feedback to our law enforcement partners. I hope this helps.

Have a wonderful evening.

Problem with that is that they would have to merge 4 lanes down to two east of Grand. If they had a hotel room to the east, it would not be that hard for them to get on Grand, go up to university and then work their way back down.

I think it will work out best if the traffic plan is a complete surprise to 60,000 people leaving the parking lots.

Basketball was horrible the last few seasons. Something needs to be done
It's because of the reconfigured lots, when they re-did the Hilton parking lots they created so many unnecessary choke points with curbs, etc. Used to be able to zipper merge from all lots into the road to exit, now each lot has a single lane of entry/exit

Remember the "no loss of parking spots" quip during the remodeling? That's how you accomplish that. It was necessary to maintain the same number of parking spots. Putting in additional entrances and exits to parking lots probably loses you 4 spaces each one you put in. Putting in perpendicular parking also saves you a few spots in each row.

Another thing for everyone to note going from Des Moines to Ames….last Friday night I was stopped on 35 between Ankeny and Huxley for an hour because of an accident. It was in an area that doesn’t have a shoulder due to construction.
I want to add DO NOT take 69 to and from Ankeny to Ames. There is road construction on the South side of Huxley one lane at a time. It is backed up with just normal weekday traffic. Good planning on someones part.

Exactly. Didn’t realize that taking that way the other night to get home from Ankeny.

We just plan on staying awhile post game tailgating
