Traffic Flow

They need to block off Ames roads around the stadium to prevent townie traffic from getting hear the stadium. It always amazes me to see people going towards the stadium on 13th and university.

This! Especially the traffic headed East on 16th towards Duff gets bottlenecked at Duff because of the stoplight. Just keep it flowing as much as possible and it would empty out a lot quicker. They shutdown some of the ramps at the hwy 30 and University exit to get traffic out of there quicker already. And the problem is that how they direct traffic and empty out the lots doesn't seem to be consistent every week either so some weeks it goes a lot smoother because they actually try to keep the flow going as much as possible and us some logic in how they do it.

Already dreading Cy-Hawk next weekend as it's always a mess trying to get parked to tailgate. I've sat on Duff and 16th for nearly 2 hours 1 year recently because they refuse to open up the lots early when things start to backup. At some point they just need to bite the bullet and open them early for public safety reasons because it starts to back up onto 30 as well when this happens. It doesn't matter what time you say lots open, people are still going to arrive early to get in line and there really is no good way to enforce that because people will still find a way to impede traffic until they open them.

I remember the days when Vet Med was GA parking and would allow overnight GA bus and RV parking too. For Cy-Hawk week they would go ahead and just stage everyone in the G4/G5 lots Friday night and start filling G3/G2 around 2-3am for an 11am game when the lots opened at 5am and once those were full start filling G4/G5 so that University and 16th was not a complete mess by the time the lots officially opened. I think they allowed only RV and buses to park at Vet Med Friday night and still stay there but with no more GA parking for those its doesn't matter now. They had a set of rules they handed out when you pulled in that you had to abide by in order to be in the staging area like you could not grill or setup any tailgating stuff outside of your vehicle and had to have a sober driver. Would be nice if they came up with some kind of unofficial strategy to manage the traffic that comes into town early so it's not such a cluster when they try to hold their ground on not opening a minute sooner than 6 hours before no matter what.
You would think they could put a couple cops there at Duff and 16th street and shut off the lights for 90 minutes after the game and just have the cops directing traffic and getting those people leaving the stadium out to highway 30.
Other towns figure it out, but its seems that the university and the city, are not working together enough, close a few streets if you have too, and get the people out and away from the stadium once the game has ended. Stop allowing people to walk over university to 16th to get to the GA lots would improve things a lot, moving along those on the street even faster. Build a pedestrian bridge there and put up some fencing to funnel the people over the bridge.

I didn’t see it anywhere in the University’s email, but I was told at the end of last season the city was cracking down hard on no lining up on University Bvld to get into the lots. If that’s the case still, it’s going to be a disaster getting in and a disaster getting out I have a feeling. Don’t have an answer for getting in, but getting out my group has just been restarting the tailgate and waiting an hour afterwards to leave. Saturday leaving Ames is going to be interesting.
This was in the "Gameday Info" email from Athletics yesterday:

All parking lots will open at 8:30 a.m.

Please do not arrive expecting to stage at the entrance of the lots prior to their scheduled opening.Cars staged or parked near the entrance of each lot may be asked to move at any time in advance of the lots scheduled opening. Any vehicles entering the lots prior to the scheduled opening times may be subject to tow.

Thanks- I didn’t read it too closely yesterday.

There is no map. They're just relying on the Iowa State Patrol and the ISU PD to direct the traffic flow. This is going to be one big cluster F. Another good idea with lackluster planning and detail. I'm afraid the execution of this idea is going to be a big fumble... maybe I'll be wrong tho.

I honestly don't think so - how can it be much worse than it has been the past couple years? Having police direct traffic at every exit should be pretty simple - if they only allow you to go one way, how could that be a cluster? Will most definitely piss some people off if they have to drive a couple blocks before being able to go their desired direction, but they'll get over it once they figure out it's faster in the end.

Guess we will find out, eh?

The largest cluster we see every game is that they allow people to walk across university right there at 16h street to get to Vet Med and the GA lots. Traffic just sit on university as people are walking to those lots, instead of fencing the area and either force them to the bridge, or build a pedestrian bridge right there and force them to go over the bridge. Stop allowing people from the GA lots to drive west down to university and force them to go east up to Grand or Duff. Do those two things, and they could cut the time in half of getting out and away from the stadium.

"All pedestrians crossing University must use the pedestrian bridge" with barricades along University that dont allow people to cross would take care of the issue. Barricade 16th from University to the first public lot entrance and force it west.

Is it a shitload of barricades? Yes. Could they be easily setup up during the game? Yes. Would it allow traffic movement from the highest parking concentration? Yes. Would it piss people south and east of the stadium off? Yes. **** 'em. Don't want to deal with it? Donate. All donor parking should get priority over any public parking.

I’m seeing parking passes for $120 in the grass lots. That can’t be right?

I was looking for a parking pass for a random game last year in C4 and was only seeing them for like $300... soooooo yeah.

Another thing for everyone to note going from Des Moines to Ames….last Friday night I was stopped on 35 between Ankeny and Huxley for an hour because of an accident. It was in an area that doesn’t have a shoulder due to construction.
That area SUCKS

This is the way I've always done it. I'm lucky in some ways, coming from Illinois, it's not like I'm planning to be home for some other event that evening. Sit in a hotel room or sit under the tent for an hour or two and listen to the post-game. It drives my wife nuts how casual I am about leaving, but on a nice evening/night, I'd rather be sitting outside than stuck in a hotel room.
We come down from MN and stay in a hotel. After the game we usually put on the post-game on the radio, set up a few chairs and have a couple of beers and let it clear out. Sometimes we will set up our TV and put a game on. Granted, we aren’tt going far, since we are staying town, but I’d rather sit outside than in traffic.

Emergency services won't sign off on that was what someone who helps handle gameday LE told me.
Seems like overkill but understandable. Even then use 3 with the 4th being only for ES.

The lonely kid directing traffic and pedestrians at Center Drive and Beach Avenue was in over his head. It was a free for all.

That’s one of four main exits for the North parking lots.

Not staging people in the grass lots or letting them park early is the most absurd and stupid policy, especially for big games like Iowa. Who on God's green earth thinks it's a better idea to let traffic back up into a parking lot on city streets and eventually Hwy 30? Telling fans not to arrive before the lots open is even more dumb, you want 30,000 people arriving at the same time?
