KFOR chaser just said police are trying to block roads because people who are trying to "leave town" are "driving right into it."

Does he get canned for that terrible advice? (I don't think he should...but seems like it miiiight be worthy of it)

No. He's good. That just wasn't a good idea, not enough time.

Said earlier that the town of "Yukon has no public underground shelters. If you can't get underground, leave."

That was with about 8-10 minutes IIRC before their "storm tracker" had the tornado arriving.

Yukon is 23,000 people (think Fort Dodge). What was the percent they said after Moore have underground shelter? Less than 10%?

I'll be generous. Let's say 50% have underground. You want to put 10,000 people on the road, in their car, with ten minutes to go with a "mile-wide" damage path on the way? And wind-driven softball-size hail the other direction?

24 people died in Moore hiding in shelter. As morbid as it sound, only 24. If it took out a mile-wide highway/parking lot, it would have been closer to everyone.

(edit: sounds like a big cluster and injuries on the highways now. Might end up taking some heat for telling people to drive south, which is the exact direction the storms have turned).

KFOR chaser: "Terrible situation on I-44 and I35, multiple car and semis crashed and thrown. I-40 is at a standstill. We're pleading with people to get off the roads and to shelter. Asking folks do not get out and drive, paramedics can't get to injuries."

"Stay off interstate, seek shelter somewhere where you can still here warnings"

Which is why every official Call-To-Action since the dawn of tornado warnings, from Red Cross to NWS has said "DO NOT TRY TO OUTRUN A TORNADO."

Especially ones like that are rain wrapped. You can't see them til they are on top of you. Now with the sun going down, its going to get darker and darker and they will be harder to see

via KFOR, Mother and baby killed when car thrown off interstate around 7:30pm.

Mike Morgan after being told of the fatality, then shows Weather Channel car. Double fatality was apparently near there.

Says "It made a quick hook, quick turn, and it caught a lot of people who do this and have been doing it for a long time, off-guard."

He then says, only hours after advising people even after TWC incident-- who AREN'T professionals -- to leave their house in cars if you can't get underground , direct quote, "I don't know how you survive that if you're in your car."

Unbelievable.

Dr. Marshall Shepherd, American Meteorological Society president with a good tweet here:

@DrShepherd2013 6m seeing more than ever effects of tornado hype & poor decisions. Warnings/science may no longer be as much of issue, human decisions are.

The "this one's a grinder, look at it grinding up the debris. You will not survive this if you are above ground" line stands out tonight.

These dorks are lucky to be alive. That part of a tree at 3:16 was coming at them like a bullet, both driver and passenger would have been dead for sure. The passenger seat guy is such a Reed Timmer wannabe
