CHEROKEE IA-

...A TORNADO WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR CHEROKEE COUNTY UNTIL 800
PM CDT...

...TORNADO EMERGENCY FOR CHEROKEE...

AT 737 PM CDT...A CONFIRMED LARGE...VIOLENT AND EXTREMELY DANGEROUS
TORNADO WAS LOCATED NEAR QUIMBY...AND MOVING NORTHEAST AT 30 MPH.
MAJOR DAMAGE WAS REPORTED IN QUIMBY...WITH SEVERAL POWER POLES DOWN
WEST OF WASHTA.

THIS IS A PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION.

Even though DMX basically set the criteria for a tornado emergency....they have yet to issue one. Hopefully no lives are lost tonight. The cells firing right now are ripe for large and violent tornados.

this seems like an extreme event so late in the year, stay safe everyone!

Wow, I'm no weather expert but it looked like a good size hook echo on the radar. Hopefully everyone is able to stay safe.

Storm report from Sioux Falls has that law enforcement reported the tornado crossing Highway 59 (N/S road into town) 1 mile south of Cherokee. No other info yet. Hopefully implies it missed as much as possible.

Radar rotation now well NE of town.

So are you thinking that this line of storms will be the only severe one for the night, or should we expect more to fire up to the west later again?

I'm from Cherokee. All my family still lives there. I just got off the phone with my parents, sounds like the storm moved passed the south side of Cherokee and the damage wasn't nearly as bad as predicted.

Wayne, NE got it pretty bad.

Quimby, IA got it as well.

Dont think Spencer got it this time.

Anyone from the Spencer area? Brothers family is up that way for nephews game if anyone has updates. Thanks

They moved all the students into the locker rooms about a half hour ago to seek shelter.

Getting some rain and lightning, but the possible tornado is farther SE in Clay County over to Buena Vista county. Tornado Warning for Clay doesn't actually include Spencer.

Is Des Moines/Ankeny suppose to get hit, or are they going to die off before they get here?

I don't think severe weather will be an issue here. Too far away from the low/triple point, and not far enough south to get the right forcing/convergence along the front.

Essentially lined up at a bad angle to get maximum forcing with the cold front.

From Jay Trobec's twitter (Chief Meteorologist at KELOLAND TV in Sioux Falls)

"Unbelievable: Chasers reported a wedge tornado 2 miles south of Cherokee, IA, moving in. Suddenly it lifted, then re-formed east of town."

Also, 37" of snow in Lead, SD.

I drove from Ames to Sioux City this afternoon and on the way, I thought a cop was behind me on HWY 20 as I saw a light bar, but they passed and it was a mobile storm chasing SUV with all the gadgets on it. Saw it pulled over about 40 miles east of Sioux City.

Told my wife I heard there could be storms, but then said something must be brewing if the chasers were out.
