Thoughts on the updated depth chart: 9-6

I'd say if money plays like he did Thursday there may be some snaps available in the near future.
I was very impressed with our linebacker speed. Matt seemed very fast in the middle. Cautiously optimistic regarding the D. The goal line stand was something we haven't seen in awhile.

I'm also concerned about the wide receiver position. We have about two dozen of them on the roster but the one who struggled the most last year is still our # 1 option? I thought the NIU game would be a good one to give someone else a look.

Who are you talking about? Darks and Williams had great games against NIU. Franklin is a weapon. Johnson made some early mistakes and then came up with some great catches. ARob caught 4 passes too. Darks, Johnson and Reynolds were all injured last year. Seems like no matter how many times that point is made, people still criticize them all for not having better seasons.

Exactly what concerns some of you about the receivers?

I'm not concerned as much as I had really high hopes for the newcomers. I don't mean to say our top five aren't good players or that the recruits aren't either. I was just hoping that one of the newcomers would show something special and force his way on to the field.

I couldn't agree more. Hopefully one of the punters can step it up this week to take the spot. 18 yard punts are going to spell trouble all year long.

I went to HS with Kirby Van Der Kamp, we've got nothing to worry about, he almost started over a senior that punted for varsity since he was a sophomore. The kid's got a cannon for a leg, he regularly topped 50 yards.

it seemed like there were quite a few times when receivers got by our backs, but we lucked out every single time because their quarterback would overthrow the ball. was that zandvig getting beat every time or someone else?

Safety takes a hit next year...
What is the rule on medical redships?
true we will loose our top 3 in Sims, O'Connell and Sandvig, but there will be plenty of talent to choose from to fill those voids. Deon Broomfield, Adrian Bennett, Earl Brooks, Jacques Washington, and Durrell Givens will all be in their 2nd or 3rd year at ISU and battle for the jobs. They'll have the advantage of having veteran corners to help them out as well with LJ, Ter'ran, Young and Reeves all back.

I was wondering if this was a possible outcome for Mike, but also was not sure it was public knowledge yet.

I think two things caused a lot of this:
1.) Mike was slowed in the 2nd half due to the pain in his arm.
2.) Sandvig was playing his first meaningful minutes at safety in a long time (ever).

Hopefully both will be somewhat alleviated this weekend, plus Sims will be back.

Sims needs to start, Benton should only play nickel, Reeves (spell) was solid at the corner I thought...

Reeves got beat about 3 times in the 2nd half. That disappointed me a little as 8i thought he was consistently solid as a freshman last year. It makes me remember the Iowa game last year where they kept picking on Banks. Seems like when Benton plays nickel, they are going to throw to the side he vacates all season.

I think the list shows a new holder (Kuhl?) Is that right? Aren't they supposed to be able to run or pass if needed?

So since George didn't get any playing time Thursday, is he going to be redshirting? It seems odd that they'd even put him on the depth chart if he would only go in if absolutely necessary. I saw that both Morton and Hamlin saw action, but not George.

I think it was Benton getting beat. Since LJ is the best CB we have and a damn good one, teams are going to be carefull when passing on his side. The side opposite LJ is going to get picked on.

Im pretty sure LJ got beat once...

We will see more Woody this week.

Give the other unused punter a shot. We have no room for error.

Benton is the one that got beat 2 plays in a row. Then, Anthony Young came in and got beat on the next play although to be fair he slipped.

I think with Sims helping out, there won't be receivers getting behind the defense.
