Thomas

I think I know what bringthemagicback means -

Matt has had trouble, or lacks confidence taking a slightly contested 3. You see him hesitate, and opt for a pass, or a dribble. One thing that's obviously new/ different than HS/ AAU is that Matt is no longer taller than most guards. In HS, he could take a shot over two (double-teaming) shorter guards without a 2nd thought. In college, most guards are his height or longer. They're also quicker to close when he begins his shooting motion. The 1 step he used to need has turned into a step-and-a-half or more of space. Sometimes when he comes off a screen, or takes a dribble handoff - if he's just slide a half-step back - I think he'd feel comfortable popping.

As the season moves along, I expect him to understand how to get an extra step, and feel comfortable taking the shot. I also expect Fred to run more screens and handoffs to be run for him.

and yes - sometimes our guys miss him when he's most open in the corner.

He took quite a few contested shots yesterday. I definitely don't think he is scared to release it either. I agree that he hesitates on some. There are times when he is WIDE open and then hesitates and passes when I wish he'd just shoot it! However, some of the threes against BYU that he hit were wayyyy deep. Like 2-3 feet outside the 3 point line. He is pretty complete for being a freshman, more importantly, he lets the game come to him and makes very little mistakes for a freshman.

I'm sure we're about to see gimmick defenses trying to keep Mel and Georges from carving up post players. Hello, Mr. Thomas.

I just disagree. He rebounds decently and when he has shot he has picked his spots well and been efficient, but what else is he there for if not to score?

Certainly not his defense or playmaking. He is there to score. And if he is able to create shots and get open it will take a load off of Ejim, Kane, and Niang's shoulders.

1. Spread the floor
2. Spread the floor
3. Spread the floor

In that order.

sorry, didnt mean to ruin your dry hump session, I guess watching both the byu game and the michigan game I didnt see him accomplish this more than a few times. Please provide examples as I would love to know what I missed.

No dry humping here. You said he can't create his own shot and then you said his last two games he did a few times while conveniently leaving out the first two games and exhibition. If you don't think MT can create his own shot then you're wrong. There's a big difference saying you think someone needs to work on something and saying they can't do it.

TBH I dont even think it was a few times. I left out the first 2 games because we played high school teams. the only times he has created his own shot was off a screen and used his little floater in the lane which if he starts making it will be very effective. Im not bashing MT, I love him and think he is great and think he should start, just stating facts.

It's nice to have, but not terribly efficient. The more I see of Fred's offense, I can see that he tries to create opportunities either around the perimeter or at the rack. Three feet inside the arc is the same number of points as a layup, but is a much lower percentage shot.

I get your point, I just think this team doesn't knock down the three yet as well as last year's and there are certain zone Ds in which this would be a nice tool to have.

The threes he made today were from NBA+ range. Showing his mid-range game (that floater was pretty) from time to time will only help get more open looks from 3 later.

eh id rather see him take it in and throw it down like Stauskas did against us....

Another nice game for Matt tonight. Fourteen points. 4/7 from the field and 3/6 3 pt.

He's going to be fine. He grows a little every game. By mid-conference he'll have some games where he goes off for a quiet 20.

Agreed. Especially on the "quiet" part. I think teams will focus so much on Kane, Ejim and Niang that there will be times they'll look up at Thomas's points and think "where did that come from?!"

I know some people wish he would shoot more, but I like the fact that he just lets the game come to him.

Yep and his 14 pts came with just 19 minutes of playing time. That's very good. He's a very efficient player and very heady.

He had a nice dribble jab step move towards the hoop tonight that got him just enough space to step back and knock down a three. Looks like he can create his own shot after all.

That was nice. Got himself some space and let it rip. First time he's done it all season.

Let's see him do it on Markel Brown, Marcus Smart, Andrew Wiggins before you crown him though. I'm not so sure the Kangaroos are the type of competition you want to be using as your standard though.

Either way, he can stroke it and as long as teams are leaving him open he will be a big part of the offense.

Well if your only measure of success is against those 3, then I think you are not going to find many people who succeed. Matt is a freshman that will continue to get better. I am not sure why we expect everyone to be a finished project.

Right on. Depending on how you define "create your own shot", guys who can do that are the exception, not the norm. Ideally, Thomas won't have to create his own shot that much, he will just have to be efficient and make most of the shots he gets.
