The ESPY's

I've seen you get pretty worked up about this Jenner thing before. It seems to bother you way more than it should and you get pretty nasty about it. I just hope someday you won't feel that way. And "I disagree with what they've done with their life" is usually code for thinking them beneath you in some way.

I am am not defending bode in any way, but your last sentence pretty much says that people can't disagree with anyone and must conform. That's just not right.

I don't post much (obviously), but as a middle school counselor, I hope that the transgender student I work with saw tonight's speech and has hope and confidence and strength to block out the comments and hate speech she gets. I also hope young people who may be transgender that I don't work with also saw tonight's speech, especially if they are athletes. Iowa high school sports have many transgender athletes, in most cases only the family and school officials know about. I hope these athletes saw the speech and gain confidence, hope, and strength. Caitlyn was likely a ratings choice and there could have been other worthy recipients, but to be one of the most famous male athletes of the last 40 years and to publicly admit she has never felt "male" and to put herself out there and be who she is, that does take courage.

I will go back to just reading and watching posts again.... :)

watched the Frontline doc about this a while ago. Those kids - anyone who can watch that and think kids are choosing that life - it was hard to watch. I admittedly thought the Jenner thing was for publicity for the first day. I don't think that after seeing about two minutes of the interview. I do think that choice took courage and hope it helps that student you work with and others as well.

Many things can take courage. And last I checked there's no ****-measuring contest to see whose life challenges took more of it.

How on earth does it say that? It wasn't a statement on anything, just an observation. She said it was generally a true occurrence. You don't think it is?

People who feel disgust or rage or anger at the way that another person chooses to live their life (when that choice does not hurt or impact anyone else) and who openly espouse that disgust and direct it at the person have problems themselves.

This situation is clearly different because of the ESPYs, but the larger issue that barryb4384 spoke to--about real-world bullying of regular people who are just trying to live their lives--is something that Caitlyn Jenner is giving attention to, and she is hopefully giving some hope to people who could really use it.

I just don't know why so many people seem to care so much about the personal choices that people make, choices that will never affect the offended person in any way. (This is much, much larger than just Jenner or transgender issues in general.)

Well, I can assure you, that if there's a **** measuring contest, Caitlyn has seriously handicapped herself.

congratulations, you agree with the hateful **** Bode is spewing. I'd be really proud of that. It's sad to see someone of my generation with so much hate in them still.

I don't think one generation or another has a monopoly on intolerance. It permeates society.

You should check again.

Is there a single person in here arguing that she is more courageous than our soldiers? Heck, is there even anyone saying she is the most deserving candidate period? I guess it helps to change the subject when your argument has no solid ground to stand on.

Agreed. Our intolerance is totally misguided here. Jenner gets a pass in my book. Screw ESPN for this complete sham of a program.

The ESPY Awards always were and always will be total BS.

On a different tangent, I was very happy to see that the abomination against UAB was not one of the candidates for Upset of the Year. I've got to admit I was a bit worried about that.

Thankfully Ron Hunter and his chair are more entertaining than Jerod Haase
