The Cyclone's Best Player is......

Bowen is overrated right now. Yes he had a ton of tackles last year, but I wouldn't be surprised if he lead the league in missed tackles as well.

I'd also add that too many of his tackles are made six to eight yards downfield. C'mon Ace, get into the backfield once in awhile and blow a play up for a loss!

Todd is the best player on the offensive side of the ball and JJ may be there soon, but I do not think that Blythe imacts the game enough times to be our best player. I would like to see him touch the ball 6 times AND have 10 passes thrown his way with at least 1 or 2 thrown deep.

I completely agree - the only thing i would add is when NFL scouts watch game film they will watch film from all his games and evaluate his effort and downfield blocking as a huge lapse directly associated to effort....Ghosts of Randy Moss past (i take a play or two off during a game) mentality will cost him a lot of money.

I really hope the coaching staff has beaten that thought process into him, because if the running game is generating first downs, that will reduce the liklihood of him seeing double coverage the whole game.

I luv ya Todd but you need to step it up or sit in a time out like i put my kids in when they can't block downfield (kiddin)....

I fully expect improved performances out of the killer B's (Bass, Brett, and Blythe) this week....we better get more performance or it will be a long year for sure....

Go clones - i need some reassurance before the Iowa game....

Bowen gets alot of irrelevant tackles

He is a good to possibly great player but i rarely see crucial tackles or plays from him. Bass, Blythe, and Brandtner.

I love how everyone on this board makes it sound like Todd is the worst blocking WR in the nation. That's kind of the new fad around here. Sorry to burst bubbles, but most WR's are poor blockers, not just Mr. Blythe.

I never once saw anyone say he was the worst in the nation. What I do see, is some leveraging the comments about Blythe is awesome, we need to get him the ball more (comments I have and will continue to make). Blythe is those things, yet he really could stand to greatly improve his blocking for others and route running.

That is a fact.

The new fad, that is kinda funny. Not really.

The proof is in the pudding. Just watch him try to block.

I am a little concerned over the man-love for this guy on the board.

I assume you're talking about Bowen, and if so... ARE YOU INSANE??? He was the one player that game in and game out brought his game to the field. You didn't see the thread yesterday with his highlight reel? The guy is full of crucial tackles and plays. And as many would like to criticize him for making tackles 8 yards up the field, just how far would the offense actually run the ball up the field if Bowen DIDN'T make that tackle? So he only made 9 tackles last week. At that pace he averages almost 110 tackles this season. Until someone else steps up and proves otherwise, Bowen's the best player on the team.

It seemed to me in the game that Bowen and their QB exchanged some words on a play and every play after that he tried to make a crushing hit on him and missed most of the tackles he had a chance at on the QB the rest of the game. Did anybody else notice this.

And Bowen was RIPPED by the coaches this week for constantly being out of position. Don't think Chizik's warning about playing time was only directed at Meyer....

Best Player...before the end of the season it will be apparent that Phil Bates is the best player on the team. I predict he will be our starting QB by the middle of the season and on his way to being the best QB for I State since Seneca.

"Ace" Bowen had an average game compared to last year and was rather silent throughout yet still made 9 tackles... I see him bouncing back and being a playmaker Saturday night.

His interception last year in Iowa City almost sparked the team to a come back.

Go Clones !

That would be an interesting twist to say the least. Nice to see you are still trying to mix in "I State" wherever possible.

I'm getting to like the I State thing...as for Bates, no consideration at all to redshirt him. They must see something there. If Arnad was definately the answer, Bates for sure would be sitting. I think he is the man...fast and a great arm. He'll be fun to watch.

I think that you may be right about Bates. Why would they put him in for two plays against Kent State unless he was a playmaker. Maybe we will be talking about Meyer getting benched for Bates in a few games.

Hopefully it will all be irrelevant as we beat UNI and EIU the next two games.

In regards to our best player, I am still with Bowen. I am taking the guy based upon his body of work as well. He was really good last year and I look for him to be our defensive leader.

Bates is made to be a QB..look at his qualities. He's faster than either Meyer or Arnad. Bench press 270 out of High School. Vertical 36", 4.4 in the 40 and a GPA of 3.2 and ACT 27. He'd probably start on our basketball team. I haven't seen his arm, but I'm betting its a canon. My money is on him, and soon if Meyer doesn't wake up.

How many plays do you think that Bates plays against UNI and will he get to throw the ball on Saturday?

I think that he will play 3+ plays and throw at least one pass.

Maybe I am just hoping that he plays that much and we get to see his arm.

Chizik had to start Meyer this season. The job is his to lose. If we don't move the ball in the first half, we'll see both Arnad and Bates probably. If Bates get in and reacts like JJ did, the rest is history. He is the man. I like Arnad too, but a quick QB gets out of trouble and sacks, and Chiziks hates sack and turnovers from the QB.

While we will have a much better idea of who our best player(s) are after the Iowa game, right now I believe that we have 2 playmakers on Defense and they would be our two best players.

They are imho Alvin Bowen and Allen Bell. Right now I give the edge to Bowen as he is always around the ball. He may be a bit undersized, but the guy makes plays.

Allen Bell is a juco transfer but he is electric. A couple more games of experience and he could be really good! We will have to hope he doesnt regress. The guy plays tight defense and doesnt give much of a cushion (unlike McCarneys teams) and he looks like he will be a difference maker with the ball in his hands on special teams.

JESSE SMITH HAD 11 TACKLES....

Make him an end for now.
