The Coaching Turnaround Has Been Drastic

I know it’s been said a lot (and ridiculed) but when you take a step back and look at the two-deeps and who is playing majority of snaps….it’s jarring how young everyone is.

True Freshman, RS freshman, Sophmores.

They are growing up before our eyes and I cannot wait to see the growth continue.

Bingo

CMC made a comment after the Ohio game that he was playing not to lose and should play to win. Or close to that. Big change in attitude.
The new Campbell (hopefully) is more like the old Campbell. Maybe even better if he is learning to correct some of his past shortcomings?

The way I look at it is running a base offense and a base defense allows the coaches to assess our capabilities. Then they are able to design the offense and defense for the best performance using those capabilities. That's true for the season, bu also for games. And, as has been said in basketball, when the ball goes through the hoop, the coach is a genius.
Or a HOF coach if your QB is Tom Brady. Etc.

I think Clanton has had the results that Campbell has to listen to him.
The big difference on the OL has been inserting a freshman RG, Black (51) for multi-year starter Simmons (55). My only Simmons sighting today came immediately following the high snap on the FG attempt, saved by the punter / holder. CMC appeared to be chewing out Simmons on the sideline immediately following that play. Is Simmons the long snapper?

The change is sometimes slow but Matt Campbell PROVES he will make the changes. I believe he was embarrassed with the Ohio game. The offense has been so much better since then.
Awhile ago, 7-9 weeks(?) back I said that if ISU made a bowl game this year a statue should immediately be built for Campbell....I stand by that. This is a great coaching job by him.
JFC people MC fired his best friend to make a change suddenly everyone is surprised he's willing to change.

In a world where a college football coach's ego is surpassed only by his salary, I absolutely love the fact that we have a coach humble enough to publicly admit a few weeks ago that he's been trying too much to protect his guys from losing rather than allowing them to try to win.

Maybe I'm just old school, but I love how Matt Campbell practices what he preaches to his players when it comes to humility. He's a lot like our university in general. He's also the polar opposite of the trendy Deon 'Prime Time' Sanders and I'm okay with that.

Our TEs havent yet been as good as advertised. Brahmer should have reeled that first TD pass in. He did the hard part snagging it with one hand. I think he tried to go for style points instead of steadying it with his other hand. Glad Brahmer got a 2nd chance later in the game. He's going to be a good one. He's one of our best weapons in the red zone. Klotz also came up with a big TD catch to seal the victory.

Dean is a little clumsy out there. Seems like his average YAC is close to zero. Not sure about Moore either.
I should have said the TEs haven’t quite been as good as advertised until the game against Cincinnati. Can't ask for much more than 2 TDs. Glad to see the coaches use them more in the red zone. Not sure our running game is good enough to pound it in from the 20.

I don't feel the coaches have changed at all. Feel the players have changed. So the staff is now willing to put a little more on their plates from a game plan standpoint.

Also, our o-line was so disfunctional early in season, my guess is coaches tried to simplify play calling

Rocco's performance in terms of poise, seeing the field, taking care of the ball, and overall decision-making has been off-the-charts good for a (redshirt) freshman starting and playing full-time for the first time against Power 5 defenses. It's like the opposite of last year where Deckers was a step behind on reads all year. I've been thinking recently about what's going to happen with Kohl. If Rocco keeps playing like this and presumably improves, hard to see Kohl getting much playing time unless he's just a hugely superior talent.

It's a good thing to have multiple QB recruits you can win with. I get it, the times have changed and you always need to re-recruit your own players now, but I don't think most schools fans worry about this kind of thing. JJ is always just one play away from being in the game.

I'm thinking transfer portal, not "is it good for the team?" Sure it's good for the team to have multiple great QBs on the roster but JJ is going to want to play, not back up Rocco for four years.
