The Coaching Turnaround Has Been Drastic

Soon, well it already has, there will be rumors of Campbell leaving again.

The people that wanted him fired ..... well they are not worth paying attention to so I never bothered with them.

The future looks very promising and if the Cyclones can get it a bowl it could be time to bump his pay up.

The money coaches get now is ridiculous but Matt is the main reason the money football has has made is higher then it ever has been.
I addressed this in another post, but I think those unhappy with Campbell have/had reason to be. I feel strongly that he has loosened his grip on the offense and let our new coaches come up with schemes etc and it shows. It’s NOT the same offense as we started with and struggled with last season. I don’t think it’s an ego thing, I think it’s a stubborn thing that he finally saw had to change.

I truly feel Campbell has let go of some things that hindered teams in the past. I think he is more open to our new OL and OC coach in schemes and play calling. This team looks different than what we saw the first three games this year and all last year. While “the buck stops” with the head coach I think he has loosened the reigns - rightfully so- on these two coaching areas.
I think Clanton has had the results that Campbell has to listen to him. The last line coach started as a GA with us so Campbell didn’t need to respect him.

If you look at Campbell’s history at ISU so far, this is not the anomaly, last year was, starting 3-0. Not trying to bash CMC at all, this was going to be a tough year with the off season drama, but this seems to be the MO for the majority of Campbell’s teams, start slow to terrible, great October, then maybe pull out another win or two. The Fiesta Bowl year we lost to the Ragin Cajuns to start the year.

I guess my point is, good or bad, I think good, this year is more typical Campbell ball than some want to remember or admit. I’ll take a bad early loss for an improved team over starting 3-0 and what we saw last year.

Seemed like last year he opted to open it up more early without working through the tougher parts and the result was flatlining.

Maybe that was the egos of players etc. too which also seems to be better this year from my couch view.

Totally off topic but does Contreras have another year of eligibility?

It was all about Rocco today. Getting him involved in the running game was huge. It kept a couple drives moving and created another variable for the defense to account for. Also, how are we not talking more about that pass to Higgins? That was NFL caliber precision. He missed a couple high, but he also threw some laser beams on the run. Rocco was turned up a little last week and a little more this week without going too far and turning the ball over. Rocctober indeed.

I know it’s been said a lot (and ridiculed) but when you take a step back and look at the two-deeps and who is playing majority of snaps….it’s jarring how young everyone is.

True Freshman, RS freshman, Sophmores.

They are growing up before our eyes and I cannot wait to see the growth continue.
This year SOME of the youth is attributed to the gambling probe and SOME is attributed to attrition.

However, what if our NIL disparity means we are always young?

We cannot wait to get it figured out four or five games into each season. I believe CMC can get it figured out if that is the case but it wouldn’t hurt to chat with TJ.

Our TEs havent yet been as good as advertised. Brahmer should have reeled that first TD pass in. He did the hard part snagging it with one hand. I think he tried to go for style points instead of steadying it with his other hand. Glad Brahmer got a 2nd chance later in the game. He's going to be a good one. He's one of our best weapons in the red zone. Klotz also came up with a big TD catch to seal the victory.

Dean is a little clumsy out there. Seems like his average YAC is close to zero. Not sure about Moore either.

Really crazy how much better the entire offense seems now. Rocco has the chains off and is slinging it. Noel has become a solid WR after not doing anything the last 2 seasons and maybe is a good returner now too? All the RBs are playing better and seeing the field at a higher quality. TE's continue on the right pass. OL is slowly getting better at blocking although there was some rough spots today. Playcalling is better and guys seem to have clear types of usages that fit them better than before

Overall I'm stunned. I thought the Iowa, and then for sure Ohio games were a sign that CMC was heading the route of everyone who stays here too long. Instead we once again have a pulse. Props
It's so good to see a thread like this, this time of year. The alternative was not looking good.

Congrats to the coaches and the culture of this particular team!

Watching a recording of the game and almost spit out my water when we faked that FG.

Glad to see that the coaching staff is actually playing to win now.
The first part of the season was a set up for that one play. I'm not saying it was a good set up, but it worked.

Yes, the calls are better, the timing is decisive, or more so, and it's great to keep the defense guessing. It opens the run game, and the blocking is improving. Maybe teams are not pressing the box as before. They are not sure if we are going to run or pass. Love that. Being more unpredictable works!

Biggest change is no longer playing not to lose. It’s been really important to play more loose and we’ve actually seen fewer mistakes IMO because people were playing tight the past few years.
And does it seem (it 'sounds' like on the radio) like there is less control (over-control) from the sideline this year, and more pace, decisiveness?

I haven't replayed (need to get busy) the last 3 games yet, but it seems like the players are being allowed to play to their strengths now, a lot better. It is showing in the stats and scoreboard.

Let's give the defense credit again too. Last 3 games have been big there!
