Subaru Outback

Outback owner here. Have a beard and love women, so I guess you could say I'm in the hippie/lesbian demographic.

Great car, amazing traction on gravel/snow, gas efficient for an all-time AWD. I would recommend you get the 6 cylinder if you're likely to go through many hills or towing anything. Acceleration on the 6 cilinder is smoother and quieter. If you're not loading much, the 4 cylinder will do just fine (I have a 4 cylinder and a family of four and haven't had any issues). Don't know if you use your truck for towing anything heavy, but can tell you that the tongue weight for towing is a 3,500lbs max, so keep that in mind.
I can't even put that kind of tongue weight on the hitch of my F350 unless it was a 5th wheel/gooseneck. Maybe I should get a Subaru.

I live in Colorado where Subarus are a dime a dozen, but we bought a Subaru Crosstrek a couple years ago and love it. It is basically a smaller version of the Outback. Great in snow and on gravel, very comfortable, great mileage. Nothing but good things to say. I also have a beard and like women, so I guess that makes me more in the hippie/lesbian category?
 
Anybody got one of these and how's your experience been?

In a couple years am going to need a new vehicle and always have been kind of curious about Subaru's

I do a fair amount of driving on gravel roads and farm fields with my job so need something with AWD. Have a Dodge Durango right now and it's been great, but won't need that big a vehicle anymore as my kids will be starting to leave the nest by then.

A pick up truck is a natural choice and will consider one but here's the thing; I need 4 doors and am concerned most big pickups won't fit in my garage and the last thing I want is a vehicle that have to park outside. Small pickups could be an options(I think the new Honda Ridgelines are really nice), but not sure they really are as well built or nice to ride on the road as a big one is.

Will need something that will last as well. Will drive it 200,000 plus miles.
I have owned several Subarus over the years and have loved them. My daughter drives one and she is an Iowa State student. I sold a Forrester to a guy with over 200,000 miles on it, and he drove it to Florida and back twice. He is still driving it and has had no mechanical issues other than maintenance

Friends of mine have one. They are a couple of 60-somethings. What surprised me was how big they had gotten. Had not been paying attention over the years (I am a coupe and sports car guy) but they have had the same size creep as most tradition models. Seems like a good option for what OP is describing and beats driving around in something with an open cargo bed that most people rarely use for real hauling.
 
Flaming heterosexual male and proud owner of a Subaru Forester. Not sure where the lesbian/hipster thing came from but I hear it all the time too. I've owned a lot of vehicles over the past 40 years and when the time comes to get my next one I'm looking strictly for a Subaru. It will be a few years so they should have all the kinks worked out of the Ascent by then

Last time I was in Colorado people either drove an Outback, a Wrangler or a truck.

I go to CO quite a bit. It's Outbacks, Wranglers, or 4Runners. I opted for the runner. I would seriously consider an outback if I was looking for a car.
 
I have an Xterra Pro-4x which I really like because it has higher clearance and a locking differential which has come in very handy and possibly saved me from a $2000 tow a couple of times. Definitely sketchier on slick roads. The subies just fly past me.

Next purchase will probably be a small truck, because I want to be able to sleep in the back of it :).

Let me know if you sell that Pro 4X ;) Buddy shops them every time we go out west...

We bought an Impreza this Spring. We like it but are kinda wishing we would have got the Crosstrek.

Bought a 2012 Outback new and have put 140k+ miles on it. It still runs perfectly. It's a great car, absolutely no problems.

Question...who has gotten big...your friends or the Subaru? Or both?
 
I have had a couple old beater Subarus, and they really ran well, got around in the snow great. Not sure about how they handle gravel roads in terms of rust. The older ones had a lot of rust issues around the wheel wells, but there are a lot of cars that rust pretty bad after you get them on the gravel and sandblast them for a while.

I know several people that have gotten new ones and been very pleased.

Take a look at a Tacoma. You can get them with 4 doors and every list you look at shows them as one of the most likely vehicles to hit 200,000 miles without any problem. I bought one a couple years ago have been pretty happy with it.
 
It may be a foreign owned company, but a lot are made in a plant in Indiana. Better than a dodge truck I had which I learned was built in Mexico.
 
They certainly are getting more popular even in Iowa. Seeing a lot more around then when we bought several years ago.

Question...who has gotten big...your friends or the Subaru? Or both?

Although American is a nation of increasing girth, both of my friends are about the same size as when I met them over 30 years ago. On the other hand, some of my old college buddies are pushing 3-bills and would never fit in my old college days MGB that they used to ride in. :rolleyes:

The car girth one I notice the most is the Honda Civic which is now the size Accords used to be back in the day, or so it seems.

Those things all appeal to me(especially the clearance. That's the one beef have with my Durango).

I am a big Toyota fan(have an Avalon). The Tacoma seems a bit pricey to me for what it is and holds it's resale value extremely well which doesn't help in this situation.
