Star Wars Expanded Universe Thread

Anyone else been watching "Bad Batch" at all? I've finally just started in and only have 2 episodes down. I found the first episode quite good and the second one decent. For those who have been watching, what have been your thoughts so far?

It's been fine, very much an extension of the Clone Wars and Rebels thematic formula. Nearly all the episodes are one-off compact adventures with small notes and threads weaving back to a larger storyline.

I have not picked up in the slightest how these character stories will be tied off, but I continually feel that way with Filoni's stories and the characters he's created. Outside of two characters warping off to the unknown on a space whale I've been content, so I will enjoy the ride.

I just finished the Thrawn book and just finished watching clone wars. Do I need to watch rebels before watching the bad batch or should I be good since they were introduced in clone wars?

Well Spoiler Alert, Thrawn appears in Rebels, so you might want to watch that.

Rebels takes place 15-20 years after what has happened so far in The Bad Batch. You don't need to watch Rebels first

I've watched them all. I'm enjoying it but it's the kind of thing that's just okay. Totally didn't need it, want it, or anything like that but I'm enjoying it because I'm a Star Wars slappy.

Last two episodes were really good with a Rebels tie in.

No spoiler, that was the purpose of me reading Thrawn. Also read Ahsoka to bridge the time gap between clone wars and rebels. Now I know why her light sabers are white instead of the original green.

There are a couple call backs to Rebels though in Bad Batch. Generally younger versions of characters you know from Rebels. It's nice to know those characters, but I don't think ruins the watching experience either way.

No, just watching the final season of Clone Wars is completely adequate to prepare you for Bad Batch

Yea, there's been a loose tie-in to the Fallen Order video game as well, but it's IMO just easter egg, same as the first episode cameo. The Ryloth storyline ties more back to the Clone Wars

This site is claiming that Lucasfilm has cast Mena Massoud (Aladdin in Aladdin) as Ezra Bridger and Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn for Star Wars moving forward. Honestly, I don't know that there could be any better casting than that, so I hope it is true.

I saw a rumor of Benedict Cumberbatch as Thrawn. Just speculation, though. Is that better?

I'm now 7 episodes in on the series and I'm agreeing with you so far. I thought the first episode was really pretty great and got me fairly hyped for the series, but then everything since has been pretty formulaic. It's been nearly the exact same types of storytelling and even somewhat repeats of the same story beats that we saw throughout Clone Wars, Rebels and even The Mandalorian. It's really is quite derivative. I should say it is at least at this point. I'd be lying if I didn't say I was hoping for something a bit more fresh and new. Anyway, that is my thoughts so far, but hoping for things to pick up again in later episodes back to the type of quality we saw in the first episode.

I will say one positive from the show has been finally seeing exactly what transpired right after order 66 and the very early stages of the empire. I know a lot of this time period has been played out in books and comics, which I've even read some of them, but it is cool to see it visually in something finally.

The casting above is now confirmed by Rosario Dawson. Again, love it. Maybe now I might end up liking the Ezra character as I found him a bit annoying in Rebels. In fact, I thought he was the weakest part of the show and he was the main character.

Looks like we are getting a Bad Batch S2. Honestly, I'm a bit indifferent on it. While I haven't seen episode 14 yet, my thoughts on the Bad Batch so far are mostly just "eh, its decent enough I guess". There are things I like about it and the characters in it, while there are many things I've found to be quite derivative and boring. I'm hoping that changes around in the last few episodes for me. In a hierarchy, I consider both Clone Wars and Rebels to be superior series, but at least Bad Batch is decently better than Resistance. For further comparison, Clone Wars and Rebels delved into some pretty bold new territory at certain times in those series, whereas I can't say the same for Bad Batch, which might be the biggest thing it is missing thus far. Granted, both Rebels and Clone Wars have had the luxury of having multiple seasons under their belt to stray into those territories, so maybe we just need some more time.

I am just now watching trough Clone Wars for the first time, because I've heard great things about them, and Rebels. I'll be interested to see where everything goes with The Bad Batch by the time I get there.

Hang in there with Clone Wars, it does take a few seasons to really get going. When it is all said and done, I consider Clone Wars to be the decently superior show to all the animated shows. The last few episodes of the new final season are some of the best anything Star Wars out there. Also, for tie-in purposes, I'd recommend watching the Clone Wars animated movie too, even though it is pretty terrible.
