I think the Iowa DOT calling BS on most of the speed cameras in Iowa is pretty compelling evidence that they aren't there MOSTLY for safety otherwise it seems odd that our DOT isn't interested in safety. 11+ MPH over the posted isn't especially dangerous in many places where cameras are placed. I don't have a link for that though. That's my opinion.

Yep. One of the things I believe they looked at was if there are other alternatives to increase safety.

One of the cameras rejected, at 14th and Grand in Des Moines, was probably rejected because Des Moines has other options. For example, it could convert that to 2-way as much of it already has been, or reduce lanes to calm traffic through there (and has had a study ongoing on those possibilities).

It is completely safe to speed 10 miles over assuming the weather and traffic is clear. That is the issue

Everyone liking these are cool with differing interpretations on dangerous and therefore pulled over at different speeds?

I'm ok with keeping the speed cameras up with the stipulation that they all have to have a giant sign next to them that says something to the effect of "Welcome to Hooterville! This bull$hit speed camera was placed here 100% so that we can have brand new shiny cruisers and UTV's and have kick a$$ Christmas parties for our cops/deputies. This camera has almost nothing to do with your safety. Have a great day!"

Believe they can take it out of your iowa tax refund.

Anyone from out of state can probably ignore them though.
I have heard that they can take it out of your tax refund but I really don't think it actually happens. A sizable minority (maybe its a majority I have no idea) of people just throw them away. I would think someone would post that there return was garnished for nonpayment of speeding tickets if it was actually occuring.

If they really cared about safety, they would get rid of all of the gravel roads. If the fines collected by cameras were used for that purpose, I might even intentionally get a ticket once in a while. Having grown up in a community with many gravel roads, it was a rare occurrence if the high school yearbook didn't have a page dedicated to the kid(s) that had died in the past year due to gravel roads. I have personally lost a 14 YO sister, a 16 YO cousin, and an 18 YO nephew in my lifetime not to mention numerous neighboring farms kids too numerous to list.

Sorry about your loss.

Do people in rural communities no longer teach their kids how to drive on gravel? In my experience when I was growing up the major accidents on gravel roads weren't about driving on a gravel surface but about people not taking traffic control (stop signs, etc.) seriously while driving on them. Also if you are going to drive 80 on gravel you had better know how to handle a car. Driving on gravel over the speed limit and ignoring stop signs are probably the problem more than the gravel itself.

Nice article today on KCCI, Prairie City since their camera's went online in 2021 have issued 82,000 tickets and made the city $3.9 million in fines. So 36 month of the cameras, 30 days in a month, they were issuing 76 ticket a day.

But its all for safety and not a money grab.
