South Dakota forums

My gut feel is I think we have a competitive team. Last years game at Wisconsin I don’t believe to be a fair comparison. Yes, they had Alabama the following week, but they didn’t have a tiring trip to Ireland the week before.

I’ll probably eat crow, but my gut says it’s closer than you think. If Iowa State piss pounds South Dakota then I’m telling you iowa state is for real. USD lost a lot of players in the portal but picked up as many coming in. If the chemistry is there, and I think it is, I think it’s gonna be a competitive game.
That Wisconsin team went 5-7 and finished 13th in the Big Ten. Agree, USD is capable of hanging with Iowa State, but Wisconsin was really bad last year.

Team won’t be too sluggish, but we all know between the Ireland W and Iowa coming up Campbell will do his best to shorten the game if/once we get up 2+ scores.

Guessing 34-17 ish.

I haven't read the entire thread. We have a team of veterans. Pros, if you will, in how they approach their jobs. The coaches will be in their ears this week about not having a let-down, and the men will listen.

The old adage says that teams improve most between games 1-2. It's SD's opener.

Our opponent is a very good team and deserving of respect. I do not foresee a blowout, but I expect a "comfortable" win for the Cyclones.

Frankly, I don't think we will bring heat. I'm with you and wish we brought it some more, as I think it adds more deception and unpredictability to the defense and has the ability to stack really big negative plays, but this staff has shown repeatedly they rarely blitz. If the past is any indication (and we've got years and years of Heacock to give us that indication), Bouman will have a decent completion percentage against us as well - around his average or maybe slightly above. If you look at QB stats against us - take last week's game against KSU for example - their QB usually has a decent completion percentage. Not excellent, but not poor either. It's interesting that our strategy is very much a bend, don't break defense and has been for years. I really think we try to bait teams into running with our 3 man front and sometimes only 2 linebackers. It just looks there for the taking. The other team does it time and again and we do just enough to get up from the secondary and linebackers to stop the run. Happens time and time again. KSU beat us in the total yards department as well as yards per rush and yards per pass, but we won the game due to timely stops, less penalties, etc. We're good at getting timely stops. It's happened so much on aggregate over the Heacock term that it clearly is something we're good at.
Over the last few years, we have held our opponents well under their normal completion percentage. I would bet that we have one of the best opponent completion percentages in college football. But a guy like Bouman could have a lot of success against our style of defense. He likes to nickel and dime his way down the field and rarely turns the ball over. It will be interesting to see how our defense plays him on Saturday.

It's the first home game of the year, SD is a decent team and will bring a thousand or two fans for the game.
If this was our first game, I would be more worried, because we have struggle in the past on that first weekend. Playing and winning last week will pay dividends this week. We have already faced a better QB and team in KSU than SD could ever hope to be.

Only way SD keeps it close is if Becht is a turnover machine come Saturday, which he has never been. They will hang with us in the first half, something like 17-7 at half, and then ISU comes out in the 2nd half, shuts down their offense, we score a couple more TDs, and are playing subs the last 8 to 10 minutes of the game.
Final score, 34 to 10.

Wonder how much Iowa State spends on scouting outside highschool players. I assume the coaches are all scouts and we don't have any folks with the job title of "scout".
My understanding is that grad assistants and analysts, lead by Derek Hoodjer, do most of the initial tape grinding. Hoodjer is Asst. AD for Football Player Personnel and is the de facto head scout/GM.

South Dakota is a good program so I'm certainly not expecting some 45-10 blowout, and I have no problem with fans being confident in their team. My prediction is something like 27-10 good guys. Not a comfortable win like we'd all prefer but also not super nervous going into the 4th quarter.

Coach TJ told me after Lunch with U today that we are wearing red pants with white jerseys and I believe white helmet. ISU is wearing some of their black, so none for us and probably as fans not a good choice either.

How many have you seen? Seems like that would rare they’d get a lot of traffic outside of like NDSU.
Besides NDSU I can think of SDSU, UNI, UND, USD - the Valley schools we play all have/had pretty active boards. I think maybe even Western Illinois had a board when we played them.
