^^^^this. This right here. Why do our opponents have such good win/loss records? Well, partly because we regularly contribute to their win total, but not their loss total.
We don't go bowling because we don't have depth and can't close.
We've left many games for the taking on the table the last 3 years.
2013: UNI, Texas (granted the call at the end didn't help), TCU (had a lead late 4th quarter: Close those and we bowl
2014: Kansas State (lead late couldn't convert a 3rd and 1), Texas (tied late into the 4th), Texas Tech (same story)
This would have put us at 5-7...so not bowling, but at least respectable for ISU standards
2015: Toledo (missed kick to win it), Okie State (late 4th quarter lead), Kansas State (Paul Rhoads still thanking UNI hoops for most recentl horrible collapse). Not to mention we were tied with Iowa in the second half.
It's a game of inches.
But that's kind of why SOS is a pretty relevant thing in CFB and for the CFB playoff, it doesn't just factor in the W's and L's of the teams you play against.
Iowa was considered for the longest time last season to have a pretty good SOS because they teams they had beaten early on had good W/L. Wisky didn't beat an FBS team with a winning record until their bowl game right? Pitt was in a similar boat with their opponents. If you looked at any type of stats at all Iowa played teams with incredibly poor offenses. I think their average opponent ended up being around 80th in the country for offense. You can beat poor teams that beat poor teams and look like you have a good SOS...a true SOS does not matter. Give me 3 MAC schools in non-con and avoiding Baylor, TCU and OU if it were somehow possible.
6-7 wins were attainable last year and ISU played/coached about 1 complete game all year (Texas).
If CMC gets to a bowl game this year without any gimmicks/fluky 8 opponent TO-type of games it will be proof that you don't need to be incredible to win a few games for this schedule.
A win is a win is a win. I don't care how they happen. [preparation + persistence = Luck] or [lack of preparation + lack of persistence = Opponents Luck]

Exactly. I don't know how you can watch this and say that all of these were just giveaways. ISU players were biting, scratching and clawing for the ball.

Thanks for the opportunity to post this again.
Before Campbell arrived I would of loved that if you would of let me pick the three MAC schools. You may not of been that happy.![]()
I realize the MAC doesn't get a lot of respect around here and it bugs you but I can guarantee 1 thing. Over a period of 50 years we would beat any of those MAC schools at least twice. I'm 51 and we have beaten Oklahoma exactly once in my lifetime. OK technically we have only played 44 times in that period and there was one tie, so I guess it isn't quite as bad as I made it sound.
I don't think anyone is ever surprised when we don't go bowling, maybe other than rustshack.
Only two big 12 teams in top 25...Gee guess who...And fans act so surprised when we don't go bowling..

Pretty sure there's not another team that talks more about SOS than us. It's a BS discussion because you play who you play. We will always (hopefully) play the B12 schools. We will also most likely play Iowa. As long as we're one of the worst teams in a strong conference, ours will be tough. And you know what would make Iowa have a tougher SOS? Yes, us not being terrible.
Campbell is disproving the "can't recruit to Ames" crowd. I hope I never hear him mention our schedule. Losers mentality.
You really don't understand the numbers and probability behind strength of schedule. If you did, you wouldn't have made those comments. Who you play matters. Just ask any 8 man team in the state of Iowa. You know those teams that couldnt win at all in 11 man against same size schools.
The local jh team is still undefeated. It's a good thing who you play doesn't matter. National champs!

The 8 man comparison is flawed. Schools don't typically drop to 8 man to win more games. It happens because of low numbers of players more often than not.
I coached 11 man my first year out of college and we won 3 games. The next year we dropped to 8 man BC we had declining enrollment and figured on having about 30 kids playing 9 through 12. It's hard to play and practice with 30 kids a JV and Varsity schedule in 11 man. Injuries increase in practice because underclassmen who aren't ready end up having to go against seniors and get smashed.
Couple of years later I switched schools and coached 11 man again. Another small school and at the end of the year we only had 20 healthy bodies (8 season ending injuries from concussions, broken ankle, and a dislocated elbow.) Dropped to 8 man the next year (I had moved on).
To say that schools drop to 8 man to win is ignorant. This isn't college. Money doesn't drive it at small Iowa schools. student well being is a driving factor.
