Solomon Young out a month with broken left hand

Seriously what am I missing here? Did anyone think that Young was going to play more than 3 minutes a game in conference?

I think he was in line to be the first big man off the bench with what he has shown so far. He's 6-8 240 and after watching Holden and Bowie struggle in the post at times so far we are going to need every big body we can get in Big 12 play. Young seems like the only big man on the roster that can post a guy up in the paint because Holden and Bowie mostly are guys that get their points in transition or missed shots.

Wonder if Carter will see some time either Sunday or the next few games. I think based on last year, Prohm won't play him for awhile even though the suspension is over.
How far back is Carter? He didn't even come close to getting minutes against Miami. Yet if Young was healthy I get the feeling he would have played 10 mins.

I feel like that is somewhat residual suspension. Last year it seemed like it took another couple of games to really be off suspensions.

I don't know, but he's approaching now or never territory. If he can't at least be the first guy up if Holden or Bowie get in foul trouble this year, he's only going to see more competition for PT next year. The next month is a make or break stretch for him in terms of contributing on the floor.

You have to think it's at least even odds that he leaves after this year. This season he was clearly passed up by Young, and now the suspension.

If Lard comes in December and looks better, his future won't be very secure, IMO.

Who do we have coming in other than Lard though. I haven't really followed who we have coming in but after this year we lose Burton Holden and Bowie. Even if he is passed by both wouldn't he be expected to see decent time? Also I don't think people really realize how much he has bulked up. He looks the part of a Big 12 player now. He won't be a star but I still think he is a solid player as a junior and senior.

Kasongo? Or is that next year? And is Lard able to play in December?

No, Lard could only play next season. He'd be on an academic redshirt the second 2/3rds of this season, hopefully assuming he makes it to Ames alright.

Our situation with the bigs next year...

Ray Kasongo coming off a redshirt as a junior

Simeon Carter as a true junior

Solomon Young as a true sophomore

If Cameron Lard makes it, he'll be a "redshirt freshman," though only with with the spring and summer to be around the team and practice with them

Right now, that is it, officially...

Kasongo
Carter
Young
Lard

Assuming no other changes, however, we still have three scholarships to give.

Isaiah Stokes is priority #1 on the recruiting trail.

After him, assume you have to jump into the JUCO market or look for graduate transfers like Bowie and Holden again to try to round out the roster.

I'm hoping like crazy that we get Stokes and then one "Holden/Bowie" type. Those two plus what we *know* we have in Young and *hope* we might have in the other three, in some measure, gives us four viable guys, which should be sufficient.

We're going to be super young and talented in the back court.

Might as well match that in the front court, even if it means something of a rebuilding year.

Ugg. I expected Holden to be foul prone, but he's fouling way more often than he did last year. With Young out he's going to have to find a way to stay on the floor for at least 22-23 minutes a game.

It's early. Prohm gained my confidence last year in being able to work through more difficult things with players when he held McKay accountable and Jameel eventually bought in.

How many freshman bigs have we really had that weren't projects and were off the bench in early rotations.

Niang started his freshman year coming off the bench and it was obvious early he was going to be a special player. Young has been very solid off the bench so far, I think he and Bowie are going to get big minutes with Holden's foul problems and Young also is the biggest post player on this team at 6-8 240 so he was going to see meaningful minutes because of his size alone. He was carving out a key role in the rotation before the injury, lets hope he heals up and is ready for Big 12 play because we are going to need him.

Holden actually played 27 minutes yesterday (still 4 fouls), but I see that as an improvement, especially given Gonzaga's size. Can't wait to have Young back though, as two deep is fairly slim. Maybe we'll see Carter a bit if he gets out of the dog house in time?

We still have Stokes on the line and other scholarships to award for next year. A big is a priority. Probably 2.

really too bad and it hurts his development. But hopefully it heals quickly and it doesn't take him much time to get back in there and contribute.
