So who replaces Cael?!?

I still like the idea of terry brands and I don't care that he's a hawk if he takes us to a title. To me, let tom brands worry about cael and we should keep our eye on the ball...unseating Iowa. Give me a guy that can get his guys as aggressive as Iowa and maybe we have a shot. Whoever it is is walking into a great season next year if he plays his cards right. How many 1st year coaches can walk in as one of the favorites for a NT. Gable would do fine too, mostly to shock everyone right back. Heskett may be a future coach for us but not sure he's ready...maybe I am wrong. Not sure if Bono is the guy or not. Is he done wrestling himself?

I believe Hesket can no longer wrestle because of his heart condition. Bono still wrestles - He placed 7th out at the Vegas tournament. Cyler was 8th behind him. 7th was the last spot that got him into the US trias at Omaha this summer.

This isn't football or basketball. This is wrestling where we talk about national titles, not just trying to get to the top of the big 12.

Unfortunately, I have a bad feeling Pollard will settle for Bono and if that's the case we're in for a complete domination from Iowa, Minnesota, OKie State, tOSU and eventually PSU. We won't be in the same league... As some else posted we'll go from the top 5 program to at best a top 10 hopefully.

+1-more if i could

I tend to agree here. settling is not an option in wrestling. We REALLY need a wow hire this time, not a paul rhoads...nothing against PR, I think he is gonna be great.

Don't buy it that Cael is afraid of Brands or that he can recruit better at PSU. We recruit nationally, especially with Cael's name at the top, and it just so happens that a decent number of the best wrestlers in the nation come from the state of Iowa, and Cael has been getting his share of them. Our recruiting has been going great, and Brands loses his "two team advantage" after next year. None of the reasons given for him leaving make any sense to me.

OK who is a "WOW" at this point? Who's the coach at Ohio State?

I would hope JP speaks to Gable - is there any chance to coach if not then help me find the best person for ISU.

Take a chance at Terry Brands, but my gut tells me he's not even going to entertain it.

Koll, Ryan, J Robinson, J Smith are probably all out of the question and would not consider ISU. They all have a great thing going, so did Cael so I could be wrong.

Branch, Borelli, and Randall have a lot of potential with HC experience.

K Jackson - I thought I heard or read a rumor he's already lined up for the next ASU HC postion. Although I hope he gets talked to for the position. I think his national recognition in freestyle would be a big benifit to ISU.

Heskett - More training on the job if he comes back.

Miller - I would be surprised if he would want to leave. He has a great thing going at Warburg.

We'll just have to wait and see but until then we can certainly post our opinions...

terry brands is about the only WOW coach we could get. there are a lot of good coaches out there that we could go after, but i really think brands may be the only one that can keep this thing going without a 2-5 year downturn.

we bring an up-and-comer in and we may lose recruits, current wrestlers, etc. if we could somehow get brands, i think it would immediately bring stability, and definately no fall off in terms of expectations

i can't believe i'm saying this, but i really want brands as our next coach.

agree. he brings at least the impression he could win a title.

also, a poster on themat.com with "inside info"-take it for what it's worth-says that isu has already contacted terry brands and kevin jackson.

no idea if it's true or not, but it is being said right now.

some things..

1. Im not sure why anyone doesnt want Bono. Not saying there isnt a reason, but can someone fill me in?

2. Terry Brands is not something to be discounted. He has a serious sibling rivalry with tom, always has. It might be tough to get him here because he is a hawkeye, but he is probably one of the few people that WANT to compete with Tom, directly. I seem to remember someone saying that he would not coach in the B10. I also seem to remember someone saying that he really isnt HC material because of his personality. Probably the best thing about him coming here would be the practice partners he brings with (from the olympic training center). I know they cannot practice with the team during the season but I think they can in the offseason. Wrestlers are flocking away from the OTC because nobody really seems to like it there, and they workout more at places like sunkist kids and universities.

3. Tom Ryan is not leaving his hotbed in ohio. Look for tOSU and PSU to now become players in the title race because of Cael and tom. Say what you want about eithers coaching abilities, but they have the best of the best to work with.

4. Some people are really anticipating Spates' departure from OU, why would we want him when they dont?

5. If anyone is thinking about bringing in a up and comer, Sean Bormet is the man.
Sean Bormet

That does not really show all of the other wrestlers he has coached like the wonderkid Andrew Howe, Spangler (I think), Jordan Blanton, Mikey Benefiel, Eric Tannenbaum, Both of the Escobedos, Joe Gomez, Brandon Precin, Alex Tsirtis, Jimmy Kennedy, Both Churellas, Mike Poeta, Jake Herbert, Dustin Fox, Zach Tanelli...

He started the Overtime School of Wrestling which is a big deal in Illinois. It is just a pipeline for studs.

Tom Ryan won't be leaving Ohio State any time soon

Hey ISU2007 and illinoisclone:

What is your take on Cael Leaving? I'm interested in both of your comments because you follow wrestling closely and love the sport.

I believe that Cael was ready for a Change/Wanted something different. It really sucks for us, but Cael is and always will be Iowa State.

I just hope we can keep the Team together. Man I was looking forward to next year, especially with National in Omaha. We still should be good, but everything is up in the AIR.

... so happens that a decent number of the best wrestlers in the nation come from the state of Iowa, QUOTE]

If a decent number is 2 to 3 per year, then you are right. But the state of Iowa can not touch PA, OH or NJ for the number of 'decent' wrestlers any of those states produce.

Ohio State and Penn State will be difficult to deal with in the years ahead. They are located right in the middle of the primary recruiting area, they have good coaches, they have the facilities, and they have the administrations and alums willing to throw gobs of money around. Iowa might be able to hang with those two, but the rest of us are in for a bumpy ride...

The current Boise State coach, Greg Randall.

(I know he's a Hawk and that nothing good has ever happened to Iowa State in Boise; but, maybe this is the way to kick our current "bad Karma" right in the face. Plus he may be the best coach available.)

I don't want Mark Manning anywhere near this wrestling program.

Tom Ryan is the coach at Ohio State for the same reasons Cael Sanderson is the coach at PSU.

Please, no Brands. I don't think it will happen anyway.

Kevin Jackson is likely to be on our list, but lower on the list and behind sever others who would be interested.

My top two reasons are:

1. He has not produced very good results in Chatanooga; and

2. He seems more concerned with his personal wrestling career than the team he should be coaching. Even though he won the tournament, I felt embarrased for the guy at the Midlands when he was out there wrestling 20-year olds. Move on with your life, dude. Or coach up your team and get some of them wrestling well.

I am also interested in what 2007 has to say as he is probably the most reputable source on here for info on the WR team. The little bit that I know of is basically just through fandom and loose association with some wrestlers. That, and classes like bio 315 (cant pay much attention because hey are so boring).

I'd have to say I agree with you on all you said. Cael leaving for is sucks for ISU, but great for the sport as long as we hire another coach who can come in and compete (I said compete, not beat because we all know Cael didnt) with Brands. This gives more people reasons to follow the sport. A lot of high schoolers and wrestling parents from PA will now follow because it adds some intrigue for them, and they now actually have a chance to be in the mix for the crown within these next few years. The same could be true of Illinois if they get a decent coach. In Illinois, wrestling is definitely not the top sport, not even close. That said, the people who follow it follow it rabidly, and usually only HS or maybe whatever college that has wrestlers from their area. I imagine this is the same around the country, and if other teams were actually going to compete with Iowa theyd see a spike in fans. This is definitely going to happen in PA with Caels name alone.

With the right hire, ISU could definitely come out of this just fine.. We'll probably have a decent year either way (barring transfers) because of the talent level in our room. We could get a better "room coach" though I'm not so sure that Cael was the problem there, but it was more likely the assistants as Cael wrestled with Z and Varner and they were our two most solid wrestlers the last couple years. Thank God that Z seems to be staying by all accounts, as he is the emotional leader of this squad, and he should be able to hold everyone together.

The big knock I've been hearing about Cael is that he was too much of a friend to the wrestlers, and less like a coach. I heard that from some wrestlers who still wrestle and from those who do not (RIP scott filler), and I've been hearing it since last year.

I would definitely like to see someone who oozes intensity (like a brands with class) come in and take over.
