SIGNING DAY CENTRAL 2024

even among 5 stars, a high percent of those kids are busts.

At least a couple of times I've heard NFL types talking about college recruiting, saying 4-5 stars are often busts and the league proves that. Lots of 3 and even 2 stars make it.

With ISU recruiting rankings you'll see about 6-6 on average per year with outliers above and below but that's our average until we can recruit better.

Myself, I'll wait until 2024 results are in to make a personal judgment about our recruiting.

Last I saw, we return 19 starters, 18 backups. And a ton of freshmen who played. So, I'll wait to see what happens.

Why do you think lots of 3 stars and 2 stars make it to the NFL? Is it because there are a pretty limited number of 4 & 5 star kids in a given year? Aren't there like 3-4 times them # of 2&3 star guys?

There are like a total of 300 4&5 star players each year. There are literally thousands of 0-3 star players each year. Are recruiting rankings perfect? Nope. Data backs up that the more 4/5 star guys you have, the better your team is.
Of course there will be more 2/3 star guys in the NFL. I was digging but couldn't find the next answer even though I know I've seen it before. What % of NFL draftees are 4/5 stars vs other rankings.

Kind of surprised how few Iowa kids are in this class. I know it isn't ranked great as a class in general anyway, but I always feel like ISU has better luck with Iowa kids developing and staying.
Some of the folks who think we’d do better if we just beat Iowa should take a look at the map. Almost all of the top kids in the class are from places like Winthrop, Monticello, Williamsburg, Winfield and Cedar Falls. We stole Roskop from Marion, Iowa stole Doll from Adel—likely because they have far more PT immediately available on offense available than we do.

The kids in far western Iowa went all over the place—including one to us and one to Iowa. Georgia stole a punter from Mediapolis.

Simple geography had a lot to do with it. Next year looks like it sets up a little better right now.

Well duh. Do the math on the percentages. There are several hundred (over a thousand?) two and three stars every year. And around 20 five stars and a.hundred or so 4 stars.

Each star group is a subgroup, and there are more 3 stars than 5 stars, sure. But the point the commentators were making, I think, is a surprising percentage of 5s don't make it, comparatively.

Good point!
We never get any 5 stars, and our success with 4 stars is not great. If a true measure of recruit value existed , it would show considerable overlap between “star” classifications. Sure, in totality, teams that get all 4 and 5 star kids have more success.
We, however, must climb the steep side of the mountain.
