My thoughts exactly. I like Coach Rhoads and everything he is doing, but we are a somewhat flukey upset of Nebraska and an "upset" over Texas away from doing very little more than we did under Chizik.

Well, dont forget our 3rd bowl win ever.
Or the fact that we are 1 set of crapped-pants away from having scoreboard on NU there and here.
Then there is the Tech game where we dropped 50+.
Id say "very little more than we did under Chizik" is not accurate.

In McCarney's hayday we were a 3. Towards the end of his tenure we dropped to 2. During Chiziks reign of terror we dropped down to 1. I'd say 2 is a fair assesment from a national perspective. So we are moving on up.

i just gotta say im really reall worried bout the QB position...ive seen nothing out of Tiller to make me believe he can lead this team...and if its a battle with Jantz then im guessing hes not the answer either..but i could be surprised somehow this year

This whole thread, along with that dumb espn article, makes my head hurt. CPR doesn't have ISU going in the right direction? Seriously, how could you possibly come to that conclusion? I don't think we will really hit pay dirt for another 3-4 years...I think CPR will eventually get on the hot seat right before turning the corner (See Gary Pinkel). Point being this is not going to be easy and it's going to take extreme patience on our part but if CPR can't get it done than nobody can..and I really believe that.

Agreed. We need a miracle at the QB spot I am afraid. If not.... bring on the rapture because I don't want to see what is going to happen this fall.

I see his point a little bit. There have been quite a few coaches that have tried.... and failed at ISU. We have a coach in CPR that is passionate about the job, loves ISU, is at home here, has the pedigree in coaching, etc... If a guy like that can fail it sure seems like a hopeless predicament even though it really isn't the case. It sure might feel that way.

I somewhat agree as well. Our problem is not a good coach, our problem is largely MONEY. More money, better program, better recruits, better program. It's why there are traditional powerhouses. Their sucesses build on themselves. Making a bad/middle program a good one can be done, and it does take a special coach. That is a coach that can get the most out of the talent they have, and a coach that can generate interest in the program. I think we've seen both from CPR. McCarney was similar. Chizik wasn't that coach, and wouldn't be. However, he did see a quick jump in money for the program, and that helps too. I hate to bring up the Hawks, but this is a good one. They talk about 'tradition'. From 1931 until Hayden Fry, there were 2 coaches with a winning record. With the right coach, and these days, money, it can be done. I think CPR has a much better chance at being that coach than Chizik was.

And I realize that I said it took money, then talked about the coach....my point is that even with the right coach, it can't be done without money. Especially these days. I think we could have the coach, our biggest need is for the money.

Nope. No need for a jimlad...if CPR flames out here it's over. The program will carry on but it would be hopeless. You've got a guy that is a proven top tier football coach with a quality staff..if he fails how could you possibly argue that anyone else could do it? By the way, I'm not saying he needs to win 10 games every year either..I fully expect there to be years we stay home at bowl season, even after CPR gets it rolling but I do expect 7-9 wins every other year or so. I think CPR is the guy to do it though. Like I said though, it may take him 3-4 more years to do it.

I agree that a lot of our problem is money. However, I think geography is also a huge problem of ours. We are in a small state to begin with, and we arent even the biggest program in our already small state.
Plus we all know about the weather here.
I was in Austin TX last month and the weather was amazing. And we all know how its been up here. That trip really made it hit home just how hard it really must be to recruit against the "warm weather schools".

Uh, what? I don't know of a single top tier football coach with a record under .500. Paul Rhoads is not even CLOSE to Mack Brown, Bob Stoops, Jim Tressel, Chris Pedersen, Nick Saban, Brian Kelly, Kyle Whittingham, Bo Pelini, or even Kirk Ferentz among MANY others.

The Iowa State football program is bigger than 1 person. Dan McCarney had a ton of passion for the job. He had some good coaching staffs. That doesn't mean you'll have success.

ISU is most definitely on the right track. It is a slow process here at isu, but its coming a long.

As for our recruiting.. meh.. One solid RB (nealy) and a few other guys doesn't make for "the best class in the last 5-10 years".

It certainly doesn't help, but Ann Arbor, Columbus, Lincoln, state college PA, heck, even Boise (to some extent) I think prove that it can be done with crappy weather. But, I'm guessing the SEC and B12 south schools think their weather doesn't hurt.

Yeah, but its different when your conference is east-west as opposed to north-south. In the big 10, all schools have the same weather disadvantage.

And even Whittingham had Urban Meyer setting the stage for him and Kelly coached in the MAC or whatever and the Big East.

Oh, now, that's just evidence. Just because almost every coach has a rough start while they build their program doesn't mean that coaches should take time building their program.

Top tier coach is something that is earned, and Coach Rhoads hasn't done anything to prove he is anything close to top tier. Average? Yes. Top tier? Not even remotely close.

Yup. And at this stage of their coaching careers, neither had the (now) top level coaches. Does it mean Rhoads wont eventually be viewed as a top tier coach? Nope. Does it mean he will? No to that too. In fact, for every Tressel\Saban\etc there's a ton more who had a bad first couple years and never ever got any better.
