Royals

What's Hochevar's situation? Hard to believe he got $5m through arbitration when he's pitched as terribly as he has...but it's even harder to believe that the club would lock him up for that amount for the very same reasons. Or are you lumping Chen and him together in that $5m figure?

Hochevar, Chen, Francouer, and Santana are making $30 million between them this year. Enough to make a grown man cry. Santana is pitching well, and they didn't give up much, but they could've had him for free! Plus, his velocity drop last year and increase this year is scary because a drop followed by a sudden increase is sign of an injury.

How could the Royals have gotten Santana for free? He was in the last season of his contract with the Angels.

Maybe we need Luis Mendoza to DH for Francoeur? He seemed better with the bat than our hitters last night. Plus, his hair is awesome.

It's his last year of arbitration, and I think he got $4.7 million, which isn't unreasonable for a ******, but relatively high-innings starting pitcher in their last year of arbitration. Rather than non-tender one of GMDM's 1st draft picks, they decided to pay him a starter's price in arbitration, and then make him a reliever (which is amazingly stupid for a low-budget team with a decent bullpen). If he was starting and could give them 150+ innings as a 4th-5th starter, I'd be okay with the $5 million, but to tender him when he was pretty clearly headed to the bullpen is pretty ridiculous. The money could've been better spent elsewhere.

Chen is also making $5+ million this year, in the 2nd year of a 2-year deal. The Royals have a penchant for pulling guys off the scrap heap, and then giving them 2 year deals after they give the Royals one good year (when there is very minimal demand for their services otherwise). There was NO reason to expect that Chen or Francouer would continue to perform at that level for 2 years considering they had yet to perform well for over one year at a time since they made it to majors.

They've been running the team on sentiment and Jesus-riding dinosaur logic for years and have to go.

This seems to be a pretty common approach when the farm isn't producing and a club can't afford C.C. Sabathia. Unfortunately, this seems to be the case with my Twins the last few seasons (Pavano, Kevin Correia, Mike Pelfrey, Jason Marquis), although it's yet to be seen that some of those guys will even give us one good year.

EDIT: it looks like Pelfrey is on a one-year deal, and so was Marquis (I was thinking of his two-year deal with the Nationals...which produced one good year and one clunker).

One word - Soriano.

Seriously, how do the Cards and Braves be good year in year out? Is their management that much better?

Having some of the best starting pitchers in baseball helps.

The Angels held an option for 2013, and I don't think they were going to exercise it. He would've been a free agent. Essentially the Royals traded for him so they wouldn't have to compete on the open market for him, but considering he's coming off a terrible year and was an injury risk with the drop in velocity last year, I suspect they could've gotten him for 1/10 or 2/20, non-tendered Hochevar and have an extra 8-10 million to spend this year...

Player development.... they produce players from their minor league systems year after year, especially pitching. The Royals - well we had 9 Top 100 players a couple years ago (remember the best farm system in baseball)... none of them have developed into a good major league ballplayer yet. Sal Perez has but he wasn't a highly rated prospect. The pitchers either sucked or got injured. Hos and Moose sucked, Myers traded, and Colon was a huge waste of a #4 pick (especially when you consider we were on the verge of drafting Chris Sale and wussed out).

Can we send Francouer back to Omaha Royals again? They need a $13M highly paid and good looking outfielder to chant at.

I would have traded him to the A's for the "Bacon Friday" guys when KC was in Oakland ...

Colon was an awful pick (even at the time) but Sale and his elbow are a ticking time bomb...

Anyone know the club's plan for Hochevar? Do you think they'll keep him in the 'pen (where he's done well) and try to unload him at the deadline this year? If they can't trade him, do you think they'll try to work him back into the rotation to either increase his trade value or prep him for a starting job in 2014? Either way, it's looking like demoting him to the bullpen was a smart move.

Try to unload him at the deadline, if they can't deal him let him walk at the end of the season.

The guy is a train wreck with people on base.

He'll probably be starting and pitching well for the Cardinals in 2014 after Duncan fixes his problems from the stretch.
