Robert Jones Improvement

Why Jones does not press charges for assault is beyond me. Why the refs didn't send Dunn to the locker room also.

Yeah, that was a textbook flagrant 2. It's one thing if you do that and then let up as you realize you've overdone it, but he maintained the hook around his neck all the way to the ground.

BRE is such an intriguing player for us. As Fran Fraschilla was saying last night... TJ is always telling BRE that he's just not that talented of a player, but he does so much for this team with his energy and hustle. He is a total glue guy. And a tremendous person too.

There were so many times last night where I'm just pulling my hair out as the ball goes into BRE, and nothing good comes out of it... either a turnover or missed shot, etc, etc. At times it's SO frustrating to watch.

But yet.. when he's not in the game, it's like we're missing something too, and we're just not as effective it seems. It's such a strange situation.

I thought this thread title was parodying the "JTS Improvements - Want More" thread.

Robert Jones Improvement - Want More

But for real he's made as impressive of improvements as any basketball player I've seen here

If I was BRE on that play I come up swinging. But I don't think I have seen this team react visibly to anything in a negative manner all season. Freaking Shead was going Caitlyn Clark after every call against Houston. That is the difference between a team playing physical (Houston) and a team playing tough (ISU). Absolutely love it.

He's not good when they double him but if he's one on one under the hoop he's been better than average IMO. Rob gets a lot of crap, and I will fight anyone to the death in his defense. One of the greatest Cyclones of all time.

Was thinking the same. You could see frustration, hands on hips, sucking wind with the Houston kids. Our kids didn't give signs that anything was bothering them every. Great way to mind-f*** the other team!

Let this sink in from last night. BRE made 4 straight free throws and Lipsey missed 4 straight. I’ve said this before and will say it again. I owe him a huge apology for early statements about his play. I’ll take another crow dinner with a side of **** sandwich and for dessert I’ll have some humble pie.

The key for Bob is making quick decisions. When he gets the ball on the block or down low and goes quickly to the basket or the baby hook he is usually successful. But if Bob labors, either in putting the ball on the floor or allowing the double to come he's atrocious. In general he's been MUCH MUCH better in being quicker with the ball this year. Last night he struggled, at times, with making those decisions and when he did it didn't end well.

He's not forcing nearly as much BS as he did for the first 3/4 of last year. When he's forcing action AND laboring with his decisions he's a terrible player to have on the floor. But when he plays within himself and either makes a quick move or a kick out he's usually effective. If he could shoot FTs like he did last night he'd be extremely effective.

Not reacting and just playing on has been an emphasis for TJ's program starting in year 1.

It got a little different last year with Grill and it showed to not really help in the end.

I will be honest. I always knew Bob was limited but also knew he played his ass off. While he deserves all the flak in the world when he forces action, knowing that he's limited, most of the frustration was really with TJ as his usage really didn't match his effectiveness. Given his lack of natural lack of athleticism, terrible hands, poor hops, and a struggle to understand his limitations despite being in the program for 2 years, I wasn't all that optimistic he could really improve.

But improve he did. Bob came into the year leaner and immediately did a much better job of playing within himself. Instead of putting up 10 shots with 6 of them being forced he demonstrated he was okay putting up 4-5 good ones, with a high percentage of makes, and generally making good decisions with the ball. He's also DUNKING the ball much more frequently this year, eliminating some of those frustrating yips he had when he'd try to lay it up despite being 6' 10".

If he only he had better hands but you can say that about all of our bigs.

I love this aspect of our program.

Haha. I yelled out "Caitlyn" on several occasions.

Even though the box score doesn't reflect it, BRE played very well last night. He was very physical and made plays at crucial times. 4-4 from the line was a huge plus. The layup he made right after Houston took the lead was huge as well, and Houston never went back ahead.

I was vocal with my frustrations with BRE last year, but he has improved his play tremendously this year.

I bet you can thank Coach Green for that improvement. How many post players did UNI develop into all conference players while he was at UNI. Its a lot.

I was with Fran Frachilla that I couldn't believe they didn't at least review it for a Flagrant 2. One arm went for the ball hard, but the other grabbing his head and leaving it on it all the way to the ground and using it to pull it down is textbook flagrant 2. The fact they didn't review it is sad.
