Individual schools don't get a vote in CFP governance.

Each conference gets 1 vote. With Notre Dame, there are 11 seats at the table.

That's the way it is currently. But that doesn't mean Big10, SEC, Big12 and ACC can't go their own route. Or push more CFP money toward the Power conferences. What would happen if conference auto-bids go away and top 12 teams get CFP bids? Would G5 be better to have their own playoff?

Just look at the current playoff payout structure- 80% for 64 schools from P5 conference and 20% for all the G5 schools.

Duke also seemed to average about 24,500/game last season.

That's up from 15,400/game in 2022.

It’s not like the ACC used hack lawyers without a clear intent for what they were doing. The GOR was written specifically for this situation - that’s the only reason it exists.

If there was a legal way around the GOR, I expect FSU or another school would already be in court. I can’t imagine they just started looking into this with the latest rounds of realignment, and I can’t think they’d just sit in a legal strategy they thought might work.

We’ve seen a lot of noise and smoke coming from FSU, but that’s likely because they’re stuck and know it.

According to media accounts the ACC GOR are same as the Big12. Some speculation the ACC just borrowed the Big12 document.

The GOR won't be easy to circumvent, but to say that schools have been motivated to break is a stretch IMO. Texas & OU didn't not have enough financial reason to go through a protracted legal battle to break GOR with Big12. The SEC agreement with CBS still runs through 2023/24 season, so the ESPN/SEC gravy train doesn't kick in until July 1, 2024. Miracle of Miracles- OuT's exit from Big12 is effective with 2024 football season.

As we have seen with past realignment, there are a lot of moving pieces that seem to have domino effects. The GOR focuses on a school's relationship with conference, but equally important are the media companies. Which have been willing to make big investments in select brands vs. paying for a 12 team conference.

I doubt the ACC can stay intact through 2036, just a matter if some school finds the legal jackpot to leave in 2024-2026 time frame or buy their way out around 2030/31.

The 2030 timeline makes it mesh with the Big 12 media timeline. Could be interesting.

Fox and ESPN would see them as a bad partner at least until the greed kicks in a few minutes later.

If the B1G and SEC were to take the first six, I would still be happy with the next four (Pitt, Miami, Wake Forest, and Louisville) as they are not half bad basketball schools and Miami would make a great fit with Central Florida. And, the others will strengthen our footprint in the east with Cincinnati and West Virginia. Basketball makes money also.

I think someone here (a while ago) said the Big 12 has naming rights to the Big 16?, maybe even the Big 14?(moot point now). Correct me if I'm wrong.

That said, naming our conference after a 'number' (16, 18, 20, etc.) is likely not to happen, IMO, as the 'number is a moving target.

I expect them to name the conference in a whole new way, or, keep the Big 12 name with some modifier, whenever they rebrand next year.

Keeping the Big 12 with an additional modifier of some sort, might be the best route. It is well known now as the #3, and the B1G and SEC have not changed their names, essentially.

Only schools within the conference that are identified as "disinterested directors" would get a vote on dissolving the conference. To be a "disinterested director" means you're not, by definition, an "interested director," which is a school that's been determined by the rest of the league to have a conflict of interest in terms of a vote on dissolving the conference.

So if I understand it correctly, if you're an FSU or Clemson who, it's clear to everyone, has a vested interest in dissolving the ACC, you wouldn't actually get a vote on the matter.

Correct and the bottom line is this, Wake and BC have got the rest of the conference by the balls. In order for the conference to be dissolved or in order to execute a total GOR buyout anytime this decade, they need to be taken care of to their satisfaction in terms of not being relegated in any fashion (i.e. if the ACC breaks up this decade, they end up in the B12).

I'd hope they don't change the name. Plenty of ways to get creative with a new conference logo, but the name has built up decades of brand equity and should stay.

The problem with the legal option is how long and expensive litigation would be. Something like this could easily take years and, if the ACC loses, it seems likely they would appeal.

A legal Hail Mary might get them out early, or it might just be a money pit soaking up funds that could otherwise be put towards buying their way out in the early 2030s.

Either way, I’d have to think the schools would make damn sure they have a landing spot cleared and the Networks were on board with a full share ready for them when they make the jump. The last thing they’d want is to SDSU themselves or be in a position like OR and WA taking partial shares for a good stretch. A big question is how much the networks have to throw around. They’re acting like they’re tapped out right now, but is that going to last 1-2 years or 5-6? I’d bet the under.

I think there has to be a chance that the ACC survives. Maybe they get Notre Dame to join as a permanent member and try some form of unequal revenue distribution. Stanford joins as well.

Interesting question. One that the ACC might ponder. Problems will inevitably ensue though, if ND got a higher share in any conference.

Money hasn’t typically been a driver for ND, and they greatly value their independent status. If conferences start going to 10 game slates, it’s going to be difficult for them to fill out their schedule outside of the 5 ACC games. There aren’t many top program that will be lining up to take on essentially 11 P5 games a year. They might get stuck with some rather lackluster opponents and that could hurt for CFP chances, or at least their seeding in the CFP.

That said, 10/10 do not want in the B12. People were worried about OR or WA “being the new Texas” with all sorts of demands for special treatment from the conference. The B10 membership (and probably the SEC) is on the table for them whenever they decide they want it, and that’s the kind of leverage necessary to get a conference to give you whatever you want.
