I understand the semantics, so yes, technically, they’re not getting paid from THAT pool of money. However, my larger point is that now, athletes are able to get paid too- something that’s part of this new CF landscape. I think that’s a good thing.

For me personally, I am much happier to give money to the athletes out there doing the work than I am a state-funded institution, that receives ba-zillions in grants and with over a $1B endowment. I’m all for people giving to the school- but if I had $50 and had to send it to a giant institution or a broke college kid working his butt off- I’m messaging @brentblum and sending that $50 to the college kid.

Yes. But that broke college kid isn’t going to help improve your seat when watching the games.

So let’s imagine for a minute that the blind squirrel found a nut here. GK is going to offer SDSU or UNLV $10m a year, but they have to spend $34m up front to get that incredible opportunity? Feels like he may have issues getting to 12 teams with those conditions. Especially when they’re giving ORWA $30m to be their conference ‘partners’. Cause that’s the way to get these new teams built up to power conference level, leave them cash strapped and at a huge disadvantage to their conference foes.
MWC schools make about $6.5M in the MWC. Getting $10M in the PAC for 5 years is going backwards with that buyout. I doubt any are in the PAC for 2024 under $14M per year. AAC schools are cheaper for 2024 (lower buyout) but more travel and probably have less media value in general.

Great post. No, the athletes aren't getting a piece of these gargantuan television contracts (yet), but knowing that an athlete can grab their own brass ring, as opposed to previously being restricted, is a step in the right direction.

Villanova, Kentucky, Kansas State, Arizona, Nothwestern. Too many wildcats. If this about branding, why stick with a generic, vanilla, politically correct name? Make AZ and KSU flip a coin to see who changes their team name. Arizona Scorpions vs TCU Horned Frogs. KSU Bulls vs Colorado Buffalos.
I think there was conference realignment proposal that had a wildcat pod and tigers pod.

Ya if GK thinks schools are going to jump on board for 10m...It'll be interesting to see if they will join for 10m or if they will need to give them more like 15m which will eat into the dollars earmarked for OR/WA/Utah.

Bro, you’re at the Jack- be grateful you get to spend your Saturday with over 60,000 of your closest friends watching your beloved Cyclones. It don’t get any better than that.

That’s like going to a great steakhouse and grumbling that you would’ve been able to afford a wagyu if you didn’t have to tip the waiter. Eat a good steak and tip the waiter good too- you don’t necessarily have to have the wagyu to enjoy the experience.

If it’s true- the $20M per PAC9 school, would that make AZ a lock tomorrow afternoon?
