I would be curious how an ACC/Pac12 merger is even possible. For that to happen ESPN has to agree to add 10 Pac12 teams to its ACC deal. At $17M/school that would be around $175M. If the Big12 adds 4 corner schools that's around $80M incremental investment for ESPN ($31.7x60%x4).

If ESPN isn't willing to be an aggressive bidder in the ongoing Pac12 media rights negotiations, why would they want to invest hundreds of millions to add Pac12 schools to the ACC? And I believe the current ACC deal with ESPN is for less money than the Pac12 is hoping to get with their current negotiations.

Not sure where the recent interest in an ACC/Pac12 merger comes from. About a year ago the UNC AD Cunningham brought it up in an email, but that is old news. I feel like Cunningham was using the merger as a tool to cause ESPN to reopen its deal with the ACC. With the economy trending down & ESPN laying off people, it might not be a great time to push ESPN. They might just tell the ACC they can do so only by breaking their deal with ESPN.

With the Billions that ESPN is going to invest in the upcoming 12 team playoff, it might prefer not being saddled with the ACCN deal ($250M+ annually) through 2036. It's not like ESPN doesn't already have the inventory with their SEC & Big12 deals. If anything, it would seem to add value to the SEC/Big12 deals as more football and basketball games can be shown on ABC, ESPN or ESPN2 where advertising rates are higher than SECN or ESPN+.
I don't know how it would all work either, but one reason for this proposed merger would be that ESPN can charge "in-state" rates or something like that for the ACCN. The Pac covers many states. Rutgers got into the Big 10 solely for this reason even though nobody in New York watched them.

Apparently you don't follow the financial news I do.
Financial news is like the regular news. There are complete departments designed to feed the news markets what they want their investors to hear. Microsoft has been genius at this strategy their entire existence. This has been my investing experience for over 40 years. 10k reports are the nearest thing we can get to 'truth' on this topic. Do you have Disney's 10k?

Yea there is much more urgency on the Pac12. The Big12 has a TV deal and can move forward as a 12 team league no issues. And Presidents and AD's can prepare budgets for 2024/25 and beyond knowing their main revenue levers.

Pac12 Presidents & AD's are going to feel some urgency in the next 60 days as media rights money is a big missing piece in preparing their 2024/25 budgets. Especially for schools that have significant debt service if they recently did facility projects or stadium remodels.
Yep, right now the PAC 12 is the buffalo with a limp while the wolves are circling.

Good luck getting all 24 plus ESPN and ND are willing.

Espn can get much of the same ACCN benefits by first adding AZ, CU, ASU, SDSU to Big 12, then moving the future leftover ACC schools to Big 12.

Heck, the big 12 can provide the basic same stuff by adding AZ and another. That would have 3 teams in at least the mountain time zone.

Do we think this impacts how much money they’re willing to throw to a certain collegiate athletics conference in order to get the rights to stream only part of their games?

I mean unless they are movies about PAC athletics....

Edit: On a side note. The seems like a ****** idea. Horrible. Open up a hip hop label and a restaurant chain to really piss the money away

No. I don't. I was responding because of the manner in which you responded sounded definitive and quite honestly, condescending to AUH2O. Accordingly, I wanted to learn of the 'basis' for your definitive stance.
Just one article for a good socialist :) I do have to smirk at the source.

What if I told you a TV network without viewers and a carnival barker from Las Vegas could bring down a 100 year athletic conference....

The "Athletic Association of Western Universities" (Current day Pac-12) was formed in 1959 after the disbanding of the Pacific Cost Conference. I do not believe the current Pac-12 conference considers the PCC's history as part of theirs. Sort of like how the Big-12 does not consider the Big 8 or the Missouri Valley's Conference history as part of theirs.

Edit: Looks like they do after all:

Imagine a world where the ACC basically all agrees to "disband" and then reform with half of its members. LOL

Taking a seat at the negotiating table.

Streaming fatigue is real.
