So why would Petiti want to break up the Big 10? Is it to pry loose the big earners from the coat tail riders and pair them with the SEC?

It's the exact opposite. This is a ruse by Fox and their puppet boy, Pettiti, to insure retention of B10 rights through 2046, avoid mandated FBS media rights pooling, and keep competitors with deeper pockets from bidding on B10 rights.
In my view, this is also a way of the little 14 to give Ohio State and Michigan unequal distribution in return for extended GOR.
This is a feature not a bug.
1) Get so big that the schedules are imbalanced
2) Let your head to head matchups get a quality win or a quality loss and ride the poll inertia.
3) Let talking heads prognosticate “What if” scenarios so teams who didn’t play can meet up the CFP
4) Profit
Not everything has to do with pooling media rights. This is being done because the “smaller” schools in the B10 need an infusion of cash to accommodate paying the players.
Michigan and USC don’t need that and also, probably rightly so, don’t want to give up equity for it.
The prior massive debt accumulated by Rutgers, UCLA, etc. and paying it off has little to do with RevShare.
So USC is basically butt hurt that they aren’t considered in the same tier as The Ohio State.

Weird that isn’t mentioned here. It’s more USC being smart like Michigan is and not inviting outside interests to the conference for short term gain.
I was told here, that the B10 would never do unequal distribution. That Unequal revenue distribution was something none of their schools ever thought about, or considered. That the top teams would never expect to get more than the bottom feeders. That everyone was so happy they all sit in a circle and sing.

Always assumed that eventually they would split other revenues in different ways. I expect every league to give more to the schools that earn CFP and NCAA Tournament money in the very near term.
And no one will have a problem with that as it isn’t baked in.
Oh, now its uneven Media only. Revenue is revenue. It was stated that it wasnt even a consideration and no one would do it or ever want it.
Pretty sure it was argued that OSU was going to eventually want more, and was told no way it would never happen, no way no one would want that. That schools like Iowa and MSU will always be on the same level as OSU and Michigan, etc etc.
Funny, how the story changed now, and people forget how hard they went initially, and as time has went on that story has gradually softened.
But now most of the conference is pushing for it. Sorry but uneven revenue distribution from one source is no different than from another, and just opens the door for not only more uneven distribution, but for dissent to start creeping in.
Saying now that it was only meant for media, is just moving the goal post.

You initially said all that about never, happen, no one wants it, that the B1G would never do any unequal distributions, then you started to change your tune with others that you only meant media, or that they would fight it, etc. But initially it was something that was said would never happen in any way, and no one even considered it, not even OSU.
You say Michigan wont ever do it.... they might not have a choice, unless you are willing to say they would leave the B10 for it. So in turn they might just have to do it.
Fighting a battle and losing is still losing.
Your hatred is just blinding you. I have always been constant that additional money for appearances in the playoff and NCAA can and should be separate. That’s not unequal revenue at all because it’s not baked in.
As an example Indiana would get more than Penn state for making the playoffs this year if such a thing happened. As long as it’s not baked in no one has an issue.
Michigan acting responsibly here is a good thing for the conference.
