Who is calling for a third string quarterback? Nobody in this post. I was just asking where Mitchell stands. We have a broken first string guy. We now will start Zeb. Who is the next guy. Simply stating with our offensive line woes it might not be bad to get a scrambling quarterback up next.

I thought this was a sensible question. Maybe the set up of initial post sent people in different or 'defensive' ('trust the coaches!' 'why are you panicking for 3rd string?') directions.

Anyway, based on the small sample of one game - particularly after the first possession - it seems like the O-line (run, pass, punt protection) + play calling + opportunities for Montgomery to dominate may be lower in coming weeks due to experience, depth, and (especially?) loss of Tom Manning/Lou Ayeni.

So it is a fair question: given apparent O-line weakness, is a pocket passer the best plan? Two variables vs three (w QB run added) for defense to worry about. The fact that Re-al is a freshman, whatever advantage spring gave, is a red flag for me though.

I think we will see Re-al in a game at some point in time just to have that change in look. I doubt he will be starting, or for that matter get past his 4 game limit unless he is way more successful than I anticipate. I have not heard a lot about the kid from Waterloo, so my guess would be, if it came down to the third string guy, we would see Purdy. His skill set is more in line with what CMC is trying to do.

I think this is right though I am not sure I like it. I like dual-threat QBs vs pro-style+run, even if they are as mercurial as Steele Jantz

Week 8: Mainly wildcat because DM was a QB once.

I rewatched the game last night on Youtube since I was at the game Saturday. I must say I was pleasantly surprised with how well Zeb looked.

The 4/10 line does not tell the whole story. Butler dropped a pass, Allen dropped a pass, Iowa's corner got away with a pass interference deep down the field (jumped on Butlers back early), and another one of his passes got knocked down at the line. Plus, he had a nice strike to Akers that was wiped away because of a holding penalty.

Good to know it's up on YT. I'd like to watch it and see if short/quick stuff really was the answer or if it was just anger and beer goggles making it seem that way.

I was at the game too and walked away thinking he had a chance to really do something late in the game and it was something good, then something bad, 12 yard pass, holding call. Just could never string things together. CMC did say he thought he played well, but the dropped passes and the officials not calling PI, as usual, is not on Zeb.

But this team didn't look competent on the offensive side.....at all....in any way...

So the best way to end speculation is to actually move the ball and score points. Pretty simple.

Play like last week and you get 3rd string QB talk. People openly wondering about the O-line and a weak armed, fragile QB.

Move the ball/score points/act like a D1 offense and it all goes away

I did notice Brock Purdy on the sidelines with the headset on, I understand he is a multi-role QB who has the ability to scramble. Iowa traditionally has issues with mobile QBs, so maybe next year. I think Kempt and to a lesser degree Zeb made it easier for the hoks when the pocket collapsed. I'm still bullish on this team and will be thru the rest of the season. I'm planning on heading to a bowl game, and honestly had so much fun in Memphis, would be happy to go back. Relax everybody and enjoy the season, it's the best time of the year.

1. Our dual threat qb has no game experience and probably hasn't worked much with the first unit.
2. Zeb is mobile enough to keep the pass rush honest.
3. There are other ways to slow down a good pass rush, such as running misdirection and counter-action plays, running screen, passing to running backs, etc.

All good points.

I would say though he gets four games and is one our best athletes. Maybe not as the full time QB, but a guy that can give the defense uncertainty and make plays.

If the season becomes a wash for whatever reason then maybe throw in the 3rd stringer and see what they can do but right now they've lost one game to a decent team and have lots of room to grow.

The offense has abilities. Needs to get roles defined, timing and spacing down, etc. but there's talent there.

Defense has talent too. Hopefully they also improve.

Expectations were high but it's only year 3 of this coach and the pundits picked 6.5 wins or something, which is still attainable despite people freaking about playing ranked teams after ISU got to #14 last year with a similar roster make up.

Also last year ISU won 8 games.

Last time before that was 2000.

That's not 39 years ago.
